Blah..... It gets kinda loud and raucous now and annoying the hell outta me. Had dealer service a while ago I think around 80k. I'm well over 160k miles and the clanking is back.

Are the replacement parts really improved and more durable now?

Any new techniques to fixing (less costly)?

Worth fixing or should I part ways?

Still love it and haven't been lusting for anything new... Bleh

what motor, 4.2?

must be something else causing that, unless it's a common problem... I wonder. I have an '06 3.2 with 211k and not done any timing chain service *knock on wood!*

I'd try one of the local Audi shops like Raven Motorsports, AU Tuning, Eurotech... those 3 shops easily have the business of 75% of audizine so cal members. that's just my estimate based on the forum activity I see here

Yep 4.2. Definitely go to a pro when I'm ready. Had slight noise start a few months ago. Now real rattly. Actually having thoughts of letting it just blow up.

You running a B6/B7 S4?

And you've already had a timing chain service?

Yep b6 s4. Done a few years ago. Maybe I'm being too sensitive. I'll go get some snake oil additive.

Most timing chain services are in the thousands of dollars. I'm shocked when I hear of folks having done the work. Many offload their S4's as a result, to be honest.

If you have chain rattle, you should definitely get it looked at.

I'd recommend Raven Motorsports in Long Beach.

The "deals" usually come from some shop that isn't qualified to do the job correctly...then the real "deal" comes when your engine explodes because of their shoddy work.

Lesson? Use one of the respected shops mentioned many times throughout this forum and save yourself the headache and money in the long run.

Depeneding on what part of socal if your in south la north OC then au tuning north SD or south OC pacific German. South sd pure motorsports. Never had dealings with raven so no comment. If you go to pacific German drop my name they should give you a deal. Check my signature.

If you are in the OC area (or don't mind the drive!) we can service your 4.2. We are very familiar with them, and our techs have owned them in the past! And of course, we have the proper tooling for the chain job [cool][wrench]

Thanks y'all for the input and offers. I'll contact shops after the new year on the possibilities. Forgot to mention the noise is primarily upon cold start. Interested in the bigger picture and estimates on what else should be upgraded while the engine is out of the car, engine swap opportunities, etc. I must still love this junker to wanna do this knowing the magnitude of the $$$$$$$s.
