View Full Version : Frozen Windshield Solution?

In upstate ny (Albany) we are getting hammered with temperatures in the 2-5 degree range with windchill around -10; -15. The last few days I can't get my windshield solution to shoot. I changed the fluid, and I can hear the motor initializing and the wipers wipe, but no solution comes out. I checked the nozzles and the line and all appear normal... I guess my question is is it possible for the solution to be frozen inside the relay somewhere? I do not have a garage, and it's been this cold for almost a week now.
Thanks

[wrench] the tube where the washier motor connects near the tank. Sometimes that freezes over and causes a restriction

Are you sure your fluid is rated to those temperatures? Some asshat could have topped it off somewhere for you with water and diluted it down. You can hit the lines and nozzles with a heat gun/hair dryer on low heat and try to thaw them if they are frozen.

Well there is different types of Windshield fluid. If you have fluid with no methanol in it, then yes it will freeze. If there is methanol in the fluid it wont freeze.

If you are not running full winter, sub-zero temp fluids then this is going to be a problem every time this winter.
You don't want to blow the pump due to a frozen blockage….
Drain the fluid you have and replace with high end -25 fluid….
Undiluted, there really is no need for 50/50 as below 25F, the H2O in that mix will separate and crystalize, thus your blockage...

I bought the fluid just recently. Rated to -20F, but I'll check for the methanol. If it's not the fluid I believe it's the tube somewhere- it is supposed to be in the low 40's this weekend so if I still can't figure it out I'll drive my Jeep until this weekend and leave it some time to thaw maybe...

-20 has methanol.

Go to a parking garage basement after the car is good and warm, then run the car until it warms the liquid in the line enough for it to work.

Filled a McDonalds cup full of hot water and went outside after work and poured it all over the tube and the nozzles and BAM frozen no more!
