View Full Version : Trying to diagnose slipping feeling

I have a 2006 2.0t a4, with tiptronic transmission. Recently I've noticed that while accelerating spiritedly, at lower rpms, I can feel a noticeable jerking/slipping feeling. It will only happen once, maybe twice in a gear. The rpms don't seem to fluctuate and this doesn't happen under gradual acceleration. This only seems have appeared since "enjoying" the new to me quattro system in the snow. I've also retrofitted an S4 steering wheel with paddle shifters but I doubt that has any influence. Thanks for any input.

When was last time you changed plugs? Coil Packs?

I had this happen, a jerking motion upon heavy acceleration. I was resigned to the fact the trans was going out at 80k. Turned out on a trip up to Yosemite / Monterey last winter that a coil blew out and gave me a nasty CEL that quickly degraded. I fixed it in the parking lot of an Autozone with one of their coil packs. I just felt the other day some more slight jerking---so I am hoping its the coil(s) again.
It could be a bad cam follower / HPFP, bad trans, other, or bad coilpacks---hope for the latter.

Could it be your Traction Control system kicking in or simple wheel slippage on a slick road?

I haven't had the car all that long and it is just about to tick over 75,000 miles. It seems like coil packs could be the culprit, today as I was accelerating up a hill I notice more of a shudder/multiple kicks, followed by a flashing CEL.

Next time you do an oil change check the Cam Follower, If you just got the car and know nothing about its maintenance history I would get that checked. AWE is somewhat by PA, they charged me like 150$ with the new follower. I would change it regardless if you take a look at it, might as well.

cam fallower requiers replacement of the intake cam shaft, bc the cam shaft outer lobe for the HPF is causing the wear on the follower. OP - dont rule out the torque converter

OP please dont listen to this. You should replace your follower every 3 oil changes. If you know nothng about the history of the car it would be good to replace.
You can replace your follower without replacing the cams Saying it requires replacement of the cams it 100% wrong and you should not give advice if you do not know what you are talking about. The follower is about 65$, and usually shops charge about 150 to take off the HPFP to replace it. This is the first wear item before the cams go that is why they put the follower there. If you are tuned you should pay more attention to the followe because it will wear faster

You can, but it's pointless, it will cause more damage and further issues. But then again we don't really know what OP issues is bc he has not provided any dtc's

x2. Cam would only need to be replaced if the follower has already failed (worn through).

Yes. It is speaking to a situation in which the follower has already failed. Also, Audi typically will not perform the extended warranty work unless the follower has already failed and you have a CEL.

Sounds like ESP kicking in. The light will blink when you lose traction. Turn ESP off, which will turn the traction light on.
Never heard of required cam replacement, when preemptively replacing the follower.

I don't think it's ESP, it'll do this with it on or off on dry roads. Also like I said earlier I noticed more jerking/stuttering today with a flashing cell, leading me toward coils. Any recommendations when replacing them?

First thing you should do is scan for codes.

x2. Always the first thing you should do if there are problems with your car. Otherwise it's just a bunch of shots in the dark.

I have a local friend with vagcom, hopefully he can take a look in the next day or two.
