Any body ever install one of those Bulldog or similar cheapo remote starters in their A6? I have an early build 2000 A6 which I believe does not have an immobilizer chip in it, so it seems like it would be an easy install.

I have an Excalibur Alarm/Starter system on mine. Straight forward install...I own a car audio shop. When it comes to brands, depends on your price range...we sell Scytek, Avital, Excalibur, Viper, Clifford, and Python. Scytek is budget system that is decent for the money. Excalibur is a much better system for not much more...they are better than Viper IMO. Compustar is another good brand. I am also hearing good things about Encore, but not tried them personally.

Avital. No question about it.

What makes one system "better" than another? I would think that it either starts the car remotely or not.

Almost all the the major brands does, viper, compustar, prestige, etc. I've done alot of remote starts and pulled out and re-done other installers remote starts, so a remote start is as good as the person installing it no matter the brand, only differences being the feaures and range. I've installed a scytek in my wifes's altima and have had no issues going on 7 plus years now.

Is there a particular model Avital that you installed on an Audi?

Just like every product ever made, different products have different build qualities. Some products outlast others, some products have issues with certain parts failing, etc. It is easy to get the product working on day 1, but will it quit in day 30 or in 6 months.

One example, Viper Systems have issues with their remotes stop working sometimes as soon as 1 month. This is more related to their 2-way remotes, but can be any model.

Another example, I have seen some systems develop starting inconstantly over time versus others are dependable.

Another difference is features that some have, some not...turbo timers, manual safety, etc.
