View Full Version : S6 V8 Out, Tial 770R 2.7T In

I'm going to be swapping the 4.2 V8 from my 02 S6 out in favor of a Tial 770R kitted 2.7T. The V8 already has an O1E mated to it.

I imagine that I'll have an easier time fitting the 2.7T into a C5 that had a V8 in it due to the larger automatic transmission that the V8s originally came with and the resulting widening of the transmission tunnel.

But I could be completely wrong, so can anyone confirm or deny my thoughts?

Also, are there any crazy things I'm overlooking?

Assuming you're pulling the trans when you swap motors, yes. There is more room.

I'm excited to see your car progress.

I've already gotten rid of the crappy automatic that came with the V8. Do I need to pull the trans out again when I swap in the 2.7T?

Thanks!

I'll wait for rednecktruck to chime in, but I would imagine you wouldn't have to. As long as you can get to all the bell housing bolts you should be good.

That being said, I hate mating engines to trannies with the trans in the car.

Just pull motor and trans together, it's not much more work and will make mating the trans and new engine easier.

Also, you will have so much room for activities in there! The v8 has a longer front end, so you will have some extra since in the bay which will be nice!

Thanks for the info. I may be doing a differential at the same time so the trans would have to come out regardless. If it's easier to get everything together then the motor will definitley come out.

That's what I was hoping to hear! I plan on running Wagner (or some equivocal) intercoolers that are RS6 sized since I'll have the room.

The SRM intercoolers are very good too and at a good price. But if money is no object....

Also, I'm surprised all the 4.2 lovers haven't jumped in yet. This thread is sure to rustle some jimmies.

And another set to look up! I thought I had gone through them all already. From reading that 2.7T vs. V8 thread I figured there'd be more outrage at my swap.

I'm doing this as well, kinda. I had a 2000 2.7 6mt a6 and picked up a 2000 casa white 4.2 a6 with a blown trans, and a silver RS6 interior. Plan is to make one car out of all of that lol. So far I stripped the interior completely on the white car, pulled the motor and trans, and am now removing the entire interior harness, almost all out, but I think I have to remove the dash support and other components I still have in there up front.

Things will hopefully be progressing quickly now that my buddy finally got his shop.

I'm collecting the last of the parts needed for the build and I've got a question about clutches... What brands and models do you all run?

8520
02-01-2014, 01:04 AM
I'm researching clutches currently.

My stage 3 a6 had a b5 rs4 clutch and it held ko4 power just fine, but didn't launch well.

With 770 power you're going to need a big boy clutch.

Mr. Rictus
02-01-2014, 06:35 PM
I get discounts on Southbend clutches so I'll probably be going with their Stage 3 Endurance clutch and lightweight steel flywheel. The clutch is good for 525 torque. I think that'll be good enough for now since I won't be doing engine internals.

Why get 770's on stock internals? They don't spool till 5k, then you have to let off at 7k? Terrible combination, especially in a heavy car. I'm doing GT2871R's in my 2.7t swapped A6, but my motor is built.

Where'd you get 5k from? From what I read, they reach full spool at 4k so I'll get some boost before then and it'll be quite a bit more power than I have now so I think I'll be happy. I'm not doing internals right now since I can't afford it. If you want to give me the cash I need to get my internals done right now, I'll gladly accept it. :-)

I got the 770R kit so I can up the boost once I get the money together to build the motor. I also had to buy a new clutch, Wagner RS6 intercoolers, have downpipes made, overhaul the 2.7T I bought, and pick up various bits and pieces from 034.

Still no pictures, but an update... The 2.7T is almost buttoned up and the V8 has been transplanted and is running in my buddy's A4.

I picked up all new timing belt bits, sensors, seals and accessories for the 2.7T. I also picked up a South Bend Stage III Endurance clutch, a High Bias Torsen Center Differential, an Apikol rear differential mount, a Bosch 040 fuel pump kit, EPL tune and fueling (MAF, MAF housing and injectors), 034 billet fuel rails, Wagner RS6 intercoolers, P3 Cars Vent Integrated Digital Interface (fancy boost, etc. gauge), OEM RS6 side skirts, and an OEM RS6 front bumper.

That's a lot of shit now that I've written it all out.

The car is currently waiting patiently at Swoops' (Hardlines by Swoops Fabrications) shop. He's been kind enough to run point on this project and I'm thankful for that! Greg T from Tyrolsport is lending his expertise on it as well.

Swoops will be welding up some containers for the various fluids that are housed in the bay as well as making a crankcase breather bottle. He'll also be fabricating the 3" downpipes and the brackets that support the Wagner Intercoolers. Greg T put the finishing touches on timing the motor as I didn't want to somehow fuck it all up. Greg T will also get the wiring situation under control as I don't want to fuck that up either.

Mr. Rictus
06-22-2014, 03:22 PM
Time was limited on Saturday so the only motor work that was done was installing the 034 coilpack adapters and removing the old plugs and oil from the plug holes.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/23/pyde4ezu.jpg

We took a look at the bay and did some figuring on where the custom power steering lines would be run and which brackets in the bay can be removed before the bay is painted.

Also, the intake manifold and fuel rail were looked into. I picked up the 034 fuel rails and vacuum port plate so the vacuum lines can be simplified and cleaned up. The secondary air and evap systems are being deleted and a catchcan will be fabbed.

Those of you who run the 034 vacuum port plate, does it completely negate the use of the OEM ports on the intake manifold? How about the port on the Y-pipe?

LOL I had a thread about possibly purchasing the car and ended up pulling the trigger. 80 year old man bought the car and drove less than 2k miles a year on it and then he developed dementia and the car sat for about 2-3 years. I bought it off of the son who lived further away, the exterior is pretty beat up, not sure from what since the carfax was clean, but everything interior/engine wise was pristine. And the best part of it, I only paid $6500 :) granted I had to put $2k to get new brakes, rotors, fix the tailshaft seal, inspection, title, tax, etc etc etc, it's still worth it for $8500 for this car. I love it.

D: This is badass... Although I'm curious does the 2.7t need custom mounts or is it a direct "fit"?

Mr. Rictus
06-28-2014, 12:27 PM
It's a direct fit, minus the snub mount bracket. The S6 has a mount on the front passenger side that's unlike the other V8s. The mount's bracket needs to be removed so the IC piping can fit. As for running a snub mount, maybe a 2.7T rad support would work?

I just went through this on my rs6 conversion on my s6. The rs6 front bracket mount is the same for the mount and the engine side. But the frame rail bracket portion is super low profile and is designed to clear the ic piping. I guess you need a snub mount thought. Maybe a 2.7t front core support with spacers on the snub bracket. The s6 frame rail mount grinds off easy.

Thanks for the info Korben! I'll add it to my research.

Lindw4ll, the motivation is lack of funds at the moment. I think I mentioned it in the thread previously, but I don't have the extra cash right now to do rods so I'll just have a conservative tune until I can overhaul the motor. And I say "conservative" like 400+ whp isn't a lot. That's quite a lot more than the 340 crank hp the S6 had, so I'll be happy. I went with the 770R kit so I had room to grow. :-)

Quite a bit was acomplished/figured out this Sunday. [:)]

Figured out how best to utilized the 034 vacuum port plate with the N249 and N75 valves, which was bothering me for a while. That setup will be a mix of hardlines, -AN fittings, and Fragola black braided line. I'm still deciding if using the 034 billet check valves will be necessary. Does anyone have experience with them?

Swoops did the final welds on the portions of the downpipes and dump tubes that were tacked last weekend. They weren't fully welded into the exhaust flange in case they needed to be modified when the motor went into the car. It's a good thing that we didn't finalize the downpipes as both sideds needed to be clocked a little bit differently to fully clear the transmission tunnel. The dump tube on the driver's side also needed to be clocked differently. He and I were psyched that none of the tubes needed to be hacked up! All in all, everything fit pretty well considering this is the first set of 2.7T downpipes Swoops has made. [up]

Swoops figured out a stainless steel clutch line for the O1E to go along with the metal slave cylinder. The blue fittings will be changed out for black, this was a test fit.

THE MOTOR LOOKS SO SMALL IN THE BAY! It's so weird to see the motor in place.

We've still got a lot to do, obviously. The motor will come back out and the tubes & pipes will be clocked, midpipes will be made so the downpipes can be mated to my Billy Boat 2.25" catback, and the phosib Milltek-style RS6 exhaust tips will be attached to the exhaust. And all that is just the exhaust stuff...

Also needing attention:

Wiring to mate the 7.1.1 C5 S6 harness to the 7.1 C5 A6 ECU
Inspect and reinstall engine harness
Injectors, fuel rail (034), intank pump, and converting in-bay fuel lines to -AN
Converting the power steering lines to -AN and hardlines as mine were starting to rust through a bit
Install metal Master Cylinder
Catchcan fabrication (Swoops) with -AN fittings and lines
Power steering reservoir fabrication (Swoops) with sightglass
Delete coolant expansion tank and run coolant lines from 2.7T motor to S6 radiator
Install inlet pipes and Y-pipe
Fabricate intake tube
Install Wagner SMIC kit (I bought a kit for the RS6 so I'm hoping it'll fit!!)

That's a lot of stuff... [wrench]

An S6 is the best C5 avant we can get in the states, all it needs is a 6mt and some real power. The v8 makes for a great DD I'm sure, but superchargers on those motors are anemic at best.

This build is awesome. It's like my rs6 but faster, easier to work on, and more economical on fuel. Kinda jealous. Was considering a 2.7t in my build but since I already had an s4!

I looked into the supercharger but couldn't buy just the kit. I was already in talks with United Motorsport to do a tune for it! Once I had a buyer for my V8, I kinda went nuts and ended up with this thread. I'm hoping with the V6 it'll still be a good DD as it's my only car for now.

Seems to me like we need a direct comparison of cars once mine is done and painted. [:p] I love your avant since it has the V8TT in it... I did seriously consider using that motor too but I figured the 2.7T would be an easier motor to own in the long run. A drawback is that the 2.7T weighs more than the S6 V8 but it looks like the V6 sits further back in the bay, probably because of the extra length the widebody C5 cars have. Maybe that'll help the front end weight distribution?

Thanks for the kind words guys. [:)]

It's okay with me. When I'm in town I putter around anyway so as not to smash a wheel or the underside of the car.

Damm dude.. taking the bee-line for 4 months, I feel bad for you..

Eh, it's not that bad. The ride home is much longer but it's actually a helluva lot cheaper per day than driving! $2.50 for a bus ride home vs. $4.50 in gas.

I found the part number for the front lower crossmember from a 2.7T C5 A6 and ordered that part. I like to use all mounting points available to me. [:p]

The part number is 4B0 805 851 E and I got it from www.carparts4sale.com. They have a ton of parts.[wrench]

Pulling the motor back out took 5 minutes this time!!

I finally remembered to bring the power steering bracket with me so I could finalize the accessories. I also test fit the up pipes that had finally arrived after being ceramic coated. I had to trim a lot more of the passenger side mount bracket than Tial suggested to get the pipe to fit correctly.

Once that was done, I cut off the mount on the passenger side frame rail, my buddy Paul (who put my V8 into his B5) cleaned he bay of the grime that built up in it,and Swoops worked fabrication.

Here are the oil feed lines:

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/28/ane8umy7.jpg

Sure, I could have bought the correct size banjo bolts to fit the distribution block, but what fun would that be? Instead Swoops welded an -AN bung onto the line that feeds the block, bent a hardline to feed the T and connected the lines.

Here are the oil return lines:

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/28/2age9uma.jpg

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/28/te4agaty.jpg

The motor only came with 1 oil return line but that didn't matter as the plan was always to have hardline oil returns. The oil pan -AN adapters are from 034 and are a really trick part! Too bad these lines won't really be seen.

Mr. Rictus
08-02-2014, 05:37 PM
Today was pretty productive...

I put the fuel rails and 034 -AN FPR adapter onto the intake mani. (Forgot to take a pic with the FPR) These fuel rails are trick! Swoops will use hardlines to connect them.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/03/aqyvy6y7.jpg

Swoops finalized the welds after re-clocking the downpipes.

Fuel lines adapted to -AN

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/03/qu5ezuzu.jpg

I finally mounted the SMIC brackets!

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/03/yzudymu6.jpg

I got the 2.7T crossbrace but before I mount it to the car I'll have to cut off the tow bracket from the passenger side rail since the crossbrace has the tow bracket attached to it.

Sometimes I have great ideas! This was not one of those times. The Wagners SMICs were made for an RS6 and I got them since they were the largest and one of the best flowing sets available. This pic shows how they sit in relation to a 2.7T motor... Luckily Swoops & I devised a plan to modify the APR bi-pipe and intercooler end to remedy the situation.

I have some vibration and I'm sure I'm wearing the engine mounts quicker without the snub mount and I'm only stage 2. It runs fine without it but at the power level Mr. Rictus is going to be at, I'm sure it is definitely needed.

What are you going to do for the snub mount? I have not been running in my car with my swap for a few years and I think its time to do something about it.

That's actually something we've been discussing a bit... I don't have pics., but I picked up a C5 2.7T lower engine mount beam thinger a while back. In order to install it I had to cut off the tow hook mounting point on the S6, which wasn't a big deal since the C5 2.7T part has the tow hook mounting point integrated into it. Since the snub mount will not mount right into the space it's supposed to due to the distance between the motor and the beam, I think we'll be cutting the snub mount beam and welding it together with the mounting point moved back so it reaches the snub mount on the motor. Obviously there will be some reinforcing involved, but this seems like the best option. Everything will mount up the same on the frame rails.

Also, the power steering lines are being redone to eliminate that crazy loop around the motor. We are adding a PS fluid cooler to make up for the loss of the squiggly lines. The coolant lines will be addressed as well.

So far I'm happy with my decision, but I haven't driven it yet![emoji16]

Alrighty, the power steering lines and cooler have been installed using the OEM reservoir for now. After looking at the bay for a while we figured that the ABS module would have to be relocated to the rain tray in order to fit the catchcan/PS fluid res as planned. In the interim, we'll use a smaller catchcan and the stock PS reservoir. It's simpler and requires less fabrication work so I can have the car back for the winter. Sorry, no pics of the PS stuff yet. It's all push lock fittings.

How about coolant lines?

Lower coolant line will be attached to the OEM mounting point on the upper pan...

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/09/dd1075b647f6fffa4cc59afd8cce9246.jpg

The upper coolant hose is shown with the filler neck installed so we could delete the coolant reservoir. The overflow will be mounted on the frame rail on the passenger side. I still haven't painted the modified Bi-pipe...

The wiring guy finally sat down and got all the pin-switching sorted so the ME 7.1 can talk to the ME 7.1.1... I did find something funny in the Bentley manual. The manual says that the APB and BBD motors both use ME 7.1 [confused] Is that right?

I plugged in the harness over the weekend, which was a huge chore since I didn't label anything before I unplugged it. [facepalm] There are a few plugs that are being deleted and one plug I'm still puzzled about. It's a brown 3 pin plug on the same part of the harness that the ICMs are on. I've got the ICM delete from 034 (which bridges the brown 4 pin to the brown 3 pin and the black 4 pin to the black 3 pin, right? [confused]) but there is this extra plug just hanging off of that bit of harness. Can anyone tell me what it's for?

The upper and lower coolant lines are finalized and shrink-sealed (I'm not sure what the technical term is) and the last PS banjo has been tightened down. Also, I blasted 150psi of air through the SMICs to get out any lingering aluminum shavings that were stuck in them then painted the welded areas black.

Work has begun getting the N75 and N249 valves plumbed from the intake mani via their new Fragola braided hose and hose ends. All harness wires, vacuum lines and sensors should be hidden underneath the intake manifold.

Damn. This is right up there with the Arctic White Rs6 Build. You'll have to do an O.G. East Coast vs West Coast epic rap battle. Your custom work is amazing-- both threads make it look like a 4.2t retrofit is easier than a 2.7t though. Once you're committed I guess the difficulty / cost would be an afterthought.

Mr. Rictus
10-22-2014, 07:52 AM
Thanks man!

Well... This was supposed to be a very simple swap with a Tial kit on the 2.7T... then I got ideas and everything went to shit as far as timelines and budgets were concerned. I'm really bad at keeping things simple and when I've got talented friends, who also have custom ideas, things turn out like this. [drool] Compared to what we're doing, I think a 4.2TT would have been an easier swap since the SMICs wouldn't have been modified. However, if I did do a 4.2TT swap, I'd still want to delete the EVAP, secondary air and all that other nonsense as well as redo the power steering, delete the coolant ball, move the ABS module into the raintray, bolt on bigger turbos, fabricate freer-flowing downpipes, etc.

What is the Arctic White RS6 build you mentioned? Do you have a link?

It is undergoing the knife again due to an oil leak which my or may not entice upgrades.

Props to you man. I agree that the 2.7T swap is more difficult. I believe your car will make more power be easier to service and all around sick setup. I was going for a OEM type setup. My swap was easy since its mostly the same car/chassis very little welding required and fab needed. Mostly a bolt in affair, but my S6 Avant after all this work is now pretty much an OEM RS6 Avant with a few custom mods. Wheels, suspension etc. What you got is something Audi never made and a unique and bad ass machine and i am envious of your masterpeice!

Great shit :) what's the spec on the wheels? Make size offset tires of that picture?

The wheels are Rotiform BWE, 19x10.5 square, et27 square with a 10mm spacer in the rear, 2.5" front lips and 3.5" rear lips. Tires are Nitto Invo in a 255/30 19. Also, the wheels are for sale!!!!!

I could have easily done a half inch larger lip in the front and an inch larger lip in the rear on an 11" wide wheel. The faces are deceivingly convex.

Alrighty.

We're finally back at work.

The harness has been installed and tied back using available OEM points. The ABS module has been relocated behind the false firewall and I've got a smaller Braille battery so that it all fits. This will allow the custom catchcan/PS fluid reservoir to reside where the ABS module used to live. Also, all new Teflon-lined brake lines have been run to the front calipers and to the lines that run to the rear calipers.

The intake manifold is finally fully bolted down!!!! The fuel lines, vac lines, brake booster line, oil feed lines, fuel injector lines and coil pack lines are all hidden underneath the manifold. I picked up the 034 after-run pump delete hose so all of this stuff would fit. I have the 034 vacuum port plate which feeds the N75 and N249 valves. Those are hidden underneath as well. In the upper left of the pic., you can see that Swoops began adapting the A/C system to -AN. I need A/C!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b382/mr_rictus/C5%20S6%20build%20pt%201/D9A2F3C1-BFDE-471B-8B68-AD58C094C972_zps25eranr2.jpg (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/mr_rictus/media/C5%20S6%20build%20pt%201/D9A2F3C1-BFDE-471B-8B68-AD58C094C972_zps25eranr2.jpg.html)

I don't have any pics at the moment, but the Podi digital gauge is installed and it's a really trick piece! It replaces the driver's side vent above the headlight switch.

The original plan was to use the 034 Carbon Fiber RS4 replica Y-pipe, but Swoops decided he wanted to make one instead.

Suggestion, since I also run tiny battery in my car. Install battery protector module like "Battery Brain Bronze T1" which basically sits between battery and positive system cable and monitors battery voltage. Once it drops below 11.8V (~30% capacity of lead battery), it cuts the Supply and drain goes down to zero since module turns itself off as well. Simply pressing a switch (either on unit or wired to unit so you can put it inside of car) re-enables the power for starting the car.

This is the basic unit which I think is the best. There are also different models with wireless remotes to cut off/in the power but these continuously drain about 10mA (which is about 1/10th of normal drain from clock, interior monitoring and alarm/remote systems of car), even after the power cut, for the purpose of wireless re-enabling... but that kind of defeats the purpose of the module lol.

I think these are awesome when you have small battery which is very easy to drain if you're not careful and mindful that you only have few amp hours of capacity in these.

Here's the problem: the harness that came with my APB apparently doesn't match up to what the wiring guy figured out.

I found that there are 6 different wiring harnesses for the APB motor in the B5 S4. My harness is from an automatic S4, so that narrows the possibilities down to 3. Now, if such things exist, I need the 3 different wiring diagram harnesses for the 3 different automatic engine harnesses that were available in the S4.

If anyone has access to any of the stuff I need, I'd be tremendously grateful for the diagrams or info. that would help us to get the S4 harness connected to the S6 fuses near the ECU.

Please.

Thanks!

Thanks man!

As for the snub mount, I picked up the C5 2.7T snub mount bracket that attaches to both frame rails. I've also got the 034 snub mount and cage. I think the plan is to weld tubes onto the cage so that long bolts can be inserted through the bracket mounting point, tubes, and then into the 034 cage. The car finally runs!!!

For some reason the video I've got won't upload to photobucket correctly and I can't post it through Tapatalk either. Balls.

Apparently C5 S6s have an issue with the in cabin wiring harness to the fuel pump relay wherein the wires are too short and they work themselves out of the plug for the relay. That's what was going on in my car. Now that that's fixed, it runs.

The cluster has to be recoded to talk to the ECU correctly and the EPL flash has to be uploaded. For some reason we've still got a connection error.

I drove the car out of and back into the shop yesterday! It runs and drives!

The cluster is going to be recoded so it'll play nice with everything else.

One potential problem/question: How do you know if the rear main seal is bad? I installed a new one when refreshing the motor but there was a small puddle of oil underneath the car after it sat to idle. Could it be that since the seal was dry that some oil had to pass through before it fully sealed? Or am I screwed and have to replace it again?

The rear main seals are very easy to damage during replacement. There is a sleeve that is used when installing the new one which keeps the bead of the rubber from folding over when it's slid over the crankshaft ... it's a PITA and will probably need to be replaced again

That's not good news. Well I guess we'll drop just the trans and replace it.

For some reason the EPL flash won't load to the ECU. I've contacted EPL about this and I'll have to do so again today. The car doesn't even want to idle on the stock tune coupled with the EPL injectors and MAF. We need to bleed the coolant system and drive the car around a bit in its current state, which is virtually finished. Swoops is going to make the Y-pipe and the car is ready to go!!

Realize this is an older post but RMS isn't that difficult to replace, mainly the reason they fail very early is people don't lube them up with oil when they put them on... What do you think happens when you start the motor and it spins at 1000rpms for a few min before oil fully reaches the seal?

Rictus I've been following this build for a while its awesome to see progress! Looks awesome!

Swoops will be building a custom Y-pipe, which will have larger inner dimensions than a stock version, but the bay only allows so much room for the huge filter used on the MAF. The filter will be angled down a bit towards the A/C dryer and a heat shield will come later.

The oil leak from the rear main has pretty much stopped completely after the initial leak. I don't think I lubed it with oil when I replaced it so that may have been the issue. Fingers crossed!

It's 3.5" round to a 3.5" round to oval transition, then dual 3" oval tubing to the transitions that Swoops made. I think the silicone couplers will be changed up as well.

Thanks man, I'm psyched.

Now the bad news: the rear main seal definitely has to be changed, so that'll be addressed next week; 1 of the -AN coolant fittings is leaking and of course it's one that's on the large branching coolant pipe that goes underneath the intake manifold.

Can that pipe be removed without removing the manifold? I really don't want to have to take the manifold off...

Well, the car is far from done so I can't really say what I'd change... However, I wish I saved up enough to get the full color change done when the motor was out.

As for using a 2.7T, the parts are relatively cheap and plentiful and the motor fits easily into the bay, so I definitely wouldn't change that!

4.2 twin turbo, 6 speed perhaps?

That'd been nice, but prohibitively expensive to have the block built, custom pistons and rods made, and then figuring out how to build the heads. I want the car to be fast, and also have easy access to replacement parts. Building the 2.7T (when I've saved up enough money to do so) will be a whole lot cheaper than building a 4.2 any day of the week. I thought about getting an RS6 motor, but that'd present the same exact problem as building the 4.2 already in the car.

Any sound clips of the exhaust? I have/had pretty much the same set-up(mine was: eBay 3"-2.5" catless dp's straight back 2.5" all the way to magnaflows, no x-pipe and/or resonators) and found it to be kinda raspy, samesies for u?

I can't get any videos to save to photobucket so no clips. Sorry.

I don't find it raspy, and Vibrant mufflers have a pretty unique sound to them. I imagine that the extra 1/2" diameter of piping would change the sound, no?

Noob question, but what are those additional thinner pipes for up top by the downpipes? Is that from the waste gate?

I ended up sending my ECU to EPL and Tony took care of it quickly. I can't recommend EPL enough!

It's 3.5" round to a 3.5" round to oval transition, then dual 3" oval tubing to the transitions that Swoops made. I think the silicone couplers will be changed up as well.

and sorry to ask questions that have probably already been answered, but that metal box on drivers side.. some combo of evap and power steering/anti freeze lol? Cause I cant find your expansion tank [:d]

My IG is lazerface_rictus.

You got it in one, those are the wastegate dumps.

The aluminum box is the power steering res. and catchcan. The coolant reservoir was deleted since it's not really necessary and clutters up the bay.

So if i understand correctly, she must be one leak free beast, because if you develop a slight leak, no extra coolant? is it possible to monitor coolant level within system without the expansion tank? This intrigues me because this is the first tank-less setup i have seen, or did i misunderstand.

You understood it. No tank! There is still the low coolant warning that will pop up on the display and if I want to check manually, all I have to do is pop off the inline filler cap and have a look.

Stupid videos won't work. :banghead::banghead:

The car runs, makes 22lbs of boost, and I'm happy! We need to iron out a few kinks for it to be 100%, but even with the kinks it's still stupid fast and the acceleration is :D:D

I finally put my new (to me) wheels on last week. They're 19x10 Work Meister with 275/30 19 Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta tires.

Who rolled them? Which technique? From what I understand, the aluminum fenders on the 4.2 are very finicky when it comes to rolling/pulling, apparently they crack easily due to the delicate aluminum. I've heard of some guys using a dremel and cutting slits all along the fender lip an inch apart and folding/rolling them in.

Well... my buddy and I used a jack handle with tape and a magazine around it. It wasn't a very careful venture and they're not cracked or anything. We didn't go nuts, just bent the inside lip up so the tire doesn't always hit it under suspension compression.

I finally got my head out of my ass and got the car to pass inspection! I kept clearing codes, not knowing that doing so reset readiness. Duh.

Also, I think we figured out what causes my idle to bounce like crazy, even after fixing a couple of vac leaks. The harness that came with the car is a shitshow and it will be replaced hopefully this weekend.

Injectors, Fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, MAF,,,,

Mr. Rictus
06-23-2016, 08:03 AM
What about those parts? Injectors and MAF were new with the EPL fueling, FPR was new, and the fuel pump was a new Bosch 040 unit. Just because I didn't list every little thing we did doesn't mean we weren't thorough. [:p]

We spent last Saturday diagnosing the motor, and checked everything. After doing all that via VCDS and using other methods, we started looking at the harness and found some plugs that were shot with wire sheaths cracked open and touching. I should have bought a new harness to begin with, but I didn't.

Wow. I've been slacking on this thread and car for a long time!

Update: I picked up Supertech +1 single groove keeper Intake and Exhaust Valves, Supertech spring and retainer kit and ARP headstuds to have my 2.8L heads built. I will also be buying a built 3.0L block with AMD pistons, Pauter rods, and ARP main studs. The block has 15k trouble-free miles on it.

Once I get off my lazy butt and take apart my 2.8 heads I'll bring them to the machinist and get this ball rolling.

Reading between the lines: I'm giving up on the 2.7T that's currently in the car. There's something up with it that I don't care to figure out since I have access to the parts I listed above.

2.8 heads bolt onto the 2.7? And there better or just bigger? Sorry for the slight derail.

Mr. Rictus

Hello, Michael.

The widebody cars deserve to go fast for "cheap" too! I very much love the swap, and it's not too terrible to get done.

Yeah, the 2.8L heads bolt to the 2.7L block. They've got bigger ports and more flow. It is advised to at least swap out the exhaust valves for the 2.7 versions, since the 2.7 versions are made to handle boost.
