Well my time has come to begin a mild re-build of my beloved A4. I've been lurking on audizine quite awhile an have done most of every other "daily 1.8t problems'' and recently cars been running excellent for about a month after installing a new pick up tube and such pulling strong an one night me an my buddy decided to do a compression test on it and i said what the hell why not cylinder 1 & 2 came out a whopping 80psi on a hot/ normal temp cycle, then we put some oil in the spark plug hole for a wet test and the numbers for both went up to about 130... number 3 & 4 were at 150 not bad for 138k but i wasn't too concerned about the low compression thought i would get college started and worry about it later after December.

A week later slow at work (i work at o'reilly auto parts) i decided to check out what the best engine restorer crap we had on the wall for and i was recommended the brand Engine Restorer, Engine Restore by my manager that has built many cars back then an he's used the stuff quite awhile even on his sons turbo talon that burned a quart a week and it helped out a lot, so i said what the hell why not give it a go. Driving to work a week and a half later cars got a very nice smooth idle no problems or flashing lights and out of nowhere after passing a civic in boost came to a complete stop and CEL flashing cars idling like shit, so i decided to shut it off to see if it helped and try to start it back up once the light turned green and nope just cranked and kept turning over so i pulled it off to the side got it towed home later on and pulled spark plugs number 1 & 2 but mostly 1 was just soaked in oil car would start but CEL would flash and same effect on the car as sitting in traffic.

So thought why not just get a fresh build/ first build going since i plan on keeping the beloved A4 till death. I've got the general knowledge to on how to gap rings, hones cylinder walls, and what not im just a little iffy on bearing clearances and all, but that's what i got you guys for.

So particularly for now on a budget i plan on buying rods and pistons that can handle a stage two setup and later on a BT setup, so nothing to costly but good quality will do for a 97 AEB block with a AWM head it would be great to see suggestions on what to get exactly. Had the last few days off work so i been tearing away at getting it apart so far i have the whole exhaust side apart and all the necessary pulleys off and power steering pump all off along with the inter cooler, hopefully tomorrow ill have the intake side and vac lines off and loosen the bolts from the block to the tranny. And wait for my buddy to get a cherry picker to pull it and asses the damage and do what i gotta do from there.

I know you guys like pictures so heres my adventure with the A4! Only had her for 8 months now...

Well got a lot further all i have left is the power steering line to the rack and coolant pipe to heater hose. And after removing the intake mani this is what i found only in cylinder 2, Im pretty sure i dropped a valve and for sure will need another cylinder head, fingers crossed hopefully not waiting on my 6 spline socket to come in to remove the head...

Well had some time tonight to remove the heater core hoses and lossen up the 3 bolts unmderneath that hook to the trans... now im ready to pull the engine i have the motor mounts and all that off but how many bolts and exactly where are they that hold the engine to the trans??? i searched and came up with after removing the starter theres one back in there???

Cactus Avant
10-29-2013, 07:48 PM
I believe there are 11 engine to tranny bolts (I could be mistaken). Two of which are bolts that hold the starter in place as well. The starter is held on by 3 bolts. Two big ones from the tranny, and a little one for the mount to the engine block. After the starter is out, there are no hidden bolts of anything back there. When I pulled my engine, I pulled the tranny with it so I can't be of too much help, but some bolts are hard to access because its so tight down there

Alrite just a quick question and to go a more cost efficient way, could i use the stock forged pistons to get up to 350whp since the block will hold up to 400chp because i was just shopping around and seen that rods and pistons combo go up to about 2k but i would just need meaty rods to hold up to the brute force, correct me if im wrong...

that's correct, your pistons will be just fine for your goals. Now whether or not you will need to replace a piston depends on how fubar it is from your current debacle. From the looks of that picture above it may need replacing.

Look into Eagle or Scat rods for your AEB.

alright cool makes me happy less downtime, less money pit... and ye im getting close to having the engine out all i have to remove is the p/s line and heater core hoses, and starter also ill have to wait for the 6 spline head bolt tool to come in thanks for the reply believer! how much is a short block going for now a day??? start a build on the side with that after the aeb all done

Simple drop in rods make your car 600chp capable. Capability is all in the supporting mods. I have a 530hp turbo on my car running at 22 psi currently with just drop in rods (tuning for 27 psi on pump on the next revision). Not sure how much power I am putting down to the wheels. But many have achieved 350 whp with just drop in rods and a decent sized turbo.

When I built my motor, I just went at it. Didn't know how many bolts till back there. If you see it, remove it. Did not even place them all back in. I did not place the bell housing to tranny bolts back in. All others went back. Good luck! And as Lucas (redline380) said, I too am awaiting carnage after the head is pulled. It won't look good, so just be prepared.

Finally had some time to myself and got to work today and got the pretty little 058 AEB pulled came out pretty simple other then a few ground wires and miscellaneous electrical wires holding it back, any ways plan on getting the head off tomorrow and assessing the damage and plan the build from there. Putting oil in the cylinder during a compression test only confirms if its a ring problem or not.

Had time today to put together the K03, decided to paint the comp. housing along with the engine bay color scheme black and gold, and got the pressure plate and clutch off the flywheel had to pry it off not too bad but i noticed after you remove the 6 Allen bolts connecting the pressure plate to the flywheel there are the 3 pins that still hold it on when i was prying it apart two of the three pins came off with the pressure plate is that a bad thing or what? will the new clutch kit come with a new set? And i noticed this block off plate on my AWM head next to the rear coolant flange, the block is a 058 AEB block it blew a timing belt before i owned it just wondering what went there. Thanks IA!

Al rite, last night i was trying to remove the head bolts, on my AEB block with an AWM head and to me it seems like the head bolts are T50 cause i stuck a T55 down there and it seem to kind of grab but no dice. I've searched trying to see what type of bolts you would use if one was to swap heads and such came up with the Aeb originally head 10mm head bolts??? and the AWM had the special 6 spline tool which i think im going to have to buy now. Just trying to make sure so i don't waste any more time or money thanks!

redline380
11-11-2013, 09:39 AM
first off, they didn't use torx head on either aeb or awm. aeb and atw are 10mm triple square heads, and awm are #6(?) polydrive. also, head bolts are block specific, not head specific. if you are using an aeb block, use aeb bolts regardless of head

Tanzimur
11-11-2013, 10:25 AM
Al rite cool so i indeed have an AEB block with AWM Swap head, so your saying i do have the 6 spline bolts and ill need to order the special tool?

redline380
11-11-2013, 10:27 AM
no, i'm saying you "should" have triple square head bolts. why don't you just look?

Tanzimur

Well got the head off and it looks like the previous owner did indeed snap a timing belt cause there are pretty nasty marks on the pistons which they did not swap out and they sourced this current head i have now, which seems to me they replaced all the valves on cylinder 2 with cheap ones and one of the intake valves snapped off an lodged into the piston head but other then that ill be needing a new head, and as far as all the cylinder walls shape they seem like a glass finish but little scoring on the cylinder 2 as far as getting the walls looking and running wise whatcha guys think will i need to get it bored out a few thousandths or try giving it an in depth hone??? What numbers should i be withing while mic-ing the walls circumference???

Is that a hole in the piston? Never seen that before. Kinda cool. Either way, that cylinder looks like a hone won't cut it. You'll be looking at putting .50mm over pistons in. Not too mention it looks way out of clearance anyways

And BTW, heads are worth about $15 in scrap.

Tanzimur
11-20-2013, 03:24 PM
Alright so hang with me here, knowing that you know your stuff this is my first rebuild ever so what i am asking is how much would i have to get it bored out? just .50mm?

redline380
11-20-2013, 03:31 PM
well that depends. how deep is the damage? more than .5 mm? you'll have to go deeper than. odds are you could hone and run stock. try catching a finger nail on the scratches. if you can feel them, it needs to be bored. if you can't feel them, odds are you could try just honing if you know what you're doing.

keep in mind, 81mm is stock, and some people go up to 83.5mm bore. it will be the same exact price for machine work and parts going from 81mm to 81.5mm and from 81mm to 83.5mm (except for the price of a big head gasket). boring won't cost all that much. its usually 20 bucks a hole, with a nice hone. that's what I paid anyways. pistons can be found for $400 or so, maybe cheaper. You should have about $500 into getting the bore and piston combo going again

Seerlah
11-20-2013, 03:43 PM
If it passes the fingernail test, first try out a hone. Scoring is one thing, scratches is another. You said you had scoring. Use a bore gauge to see where you are afterwards in case you end up taking off too much material to get the scoring out. This is assuming the standard honing procedure does not get it and you have to hone more. Use this time to check for any ovalation of the cylinder also.

redline380
11-20-2013, 03:54 PM
i'm mostly concerned about this

Alright thanks for all the info, i tryed the fingernail test and ye i can feel some scratches along the cylinder walls. And redline are you concerned about the gap? And as far as these pictures show 81.5mm bore would help with getting rid of the scratches cause its not even a half a fingernail deep scratch, but ill see how bad it is after i try and hone it out like seerlah mentioned!

Seerlah
11-20-2013, 04:31 PM
Piston just isn't seated right. It's kind of f*cked. Underside (wristpin) is most likely fubered also, causing the piston to sit like that. But a bore gauge is a def plus if just wanting to confirm. I used that on the my first engine before even going to work on it (not going to work on a warped block). Ended up scratching the wall on a dumb goof, but still checked before none the less. Not on the replacement block because I knew it to be true (bought from thenj3).

Bring the block to a competent machinist and he will tell you how much of an overbore you would require. They should be able to just look at it and tell you. Should not be charged for this. Be sure to dismantle it first.

Tanzimur
11-20-2013, 04:35 PM
Right as i supposed the rod might be bent and what not so ill grab a hold of a bore gauge soon, and im not too worried about the head, pistons or rods, because i already have bought a DD 5 spd focus 2.0 duratec lol and just wanna build this to the blocks potential.

Seerlah
11-20-2013, 05:21 PM
Don't bother with the bore gauge yet. Bring the block to a machinist and see what he says. If it needs an overbore, no need to use a bore gauge on it. If he says it can be honed out, then pick one up for your build. A decent bore gauge is not cheap ($100+), so don't pick one up if you don't need to.

If you caught your nail on the cylinder wall, you won't hone it out. Honing isn't meant to remove material. It needs a bore.

Tanzimur

Yup i understand that now, all i need to do now is tear it down collect some money and get it off to the machine shop! What kind of name brand pistons and rod combos would you guys recommend something quality but doesn't hurt the bank to much. Or would it be cheaper to buy each separate?

that is just a stock photo. audi pistons do not look like that. but generally pistons have different shapes to effect the combustion process, or because they cant be made tall enough or the valves will hit, so the ones in the picture probably just have a really big valve relief while still trying to maintain the correct compression ratio.

I don't know about supertechs, but there are probably just like the mahles I installed (which look just like stock. mahle made the stock pistons, afterall). only the center intake valve has valve relief. the stroker pistons are a bit different for reasons stated above and I think all five valves get valve relief on those pistons. also note how the ones pictured on ebay only have valve relief for four valves. that wouldn't work so well in your engine lol

Tanzimur

Al rite for those of you who were wondering what happened with this build thread, its still going ive just been focused on work and school, gathering money up to get this engine done. But what happened was i had the Audi sittn under a car cover for 3 months now and got pretty depressed that i couldn't drive my baby... So what i did was cleaned out my garage, got all the parts outta the way and sorted/ painted, and sat in her. Felt like home driving on those hot 90 degree days almost teared up but had a BIG brain blast and figured im just going to buy another stock 1.8t fairly low miles and put it back in her so i can drive and what not and build my original block over time..... :) :) :) :) :)

So the big question i had, and ive researched is the a B5 VW Passat 1.8t is the exact same engine and will drop right in on my trans and the entire cradle no problems as long as its an AEB engine code... Just want some one to chime in and correct me if im wrong or what are the problems i would be facing in doing so. Because ive found plenty of Manual 1.8t AEB specific audi and vw engines tested with 111k to 130k pulled ready to go for 500 to 800 bucks.

A little what the Audi been looking like since then, couldn't handle myself had to do it...

So i grabbed a pretty little gem AEB form a 99 B5 Passat, 136k miles and it was claimed to be women owned which explains the brand new clutch on their, she supposedly wrecked the car and junkd it and i have picked it up for 500 bucks! OE spark plugs still in checked timing, hydro lifters all there, CCT in time pads not worn, and it also came with the turbo and n75 valve, No shaft play! So right now in the process of swapping over my painted parts and cleanin her up throw my new oil pump in their and do the t-belt start boostn on my beautiful Audi! P.S. Also just wondering if the oil cooler came with any gaskets or O-rings cause when i took the oil filter off the newer engine the whole entire shaft came out with the filter and released the oil cooler from the block...

Isn't there a place where you can jam a screwdriver through the power steering pulley to keep it from turning? If there isn't maybe you can use a strap wrench and an impact. There's an oring between the oil cooler and aluminium housing.

BaseDrifter
01-04-2014, 08:12 PM
Yes there is an o-ring between the cooler and housing. I just wrote a DIY article the other day about replacing it.

So i just purchased an Ecu stage 1 chip from SSP tuning it should be here by Wednesday at the latest, I was wondering what makes a stage 2 chip that much better other then bigger injectors, and advance timing? is there much of a gain their? And whats the limit on our internals on a stock 058 block?

redline380
01-24-2014, 09:24 AM
some tuners have to stage to a stock ecu and stock injectors. One is kind of a half-assed chip, with 13-15psi, the other is the standard 18psi and a little more timing, maybe tuned for 93 octane. Some tuners stage 1 is other tuners stage 2. The stage are arbitrary while compared to other tuners. If a k04 tune from GIAC is stage 3, what does that make my 2871 maestro tuned car? Like, stage 10? That is why I don't like calling the tunes in stages, but rather by which turbo the tune is meant to run. In your case though, the stage 1 tune is a half-assed tune, the stage 2 is the full tune on stock inejectors. A stage 2 tune on a b6 usually includes bigger injectors, but not a b5, especially an AEB.

I thought Stage 1 would be to simply up the boost, have a little more aggressive timing, and a little leaner mixture, while on an otherwise stock car.
I thought Stage 2 would be things like high flow cat/test pipe, upgraded intercooler, higher flowing injectors, a little more aggressive timing than Stage 1, and potentially (but not necessarily) a little more boost than Stage 1.
Different companies do different things... for example I think APR has a Stage 2+ which definitely uses a K04 (not sure if their Stage 2 uses a K04 or not).

So ultimately I agree with redline... stages are stupid for the A4 (they make more sense for the S4).

And to answer your question: check with the vendor. They'll tell you the differences.

90% of people run their elim kits on stock rods. Torque kills rods, not boost. I plan on running 17psi or so with my 2871 elim on a stock block. Plenty of people have and are running that setup for thousands of miles with no issues.

Rebuilding trans? I have been inside a couple 4l60/80e's and they are complicated. I would hate to see the inside of one of these 8 speed Audi trannies.

Personally, if it were me I'd get into heavy diesel. I have a few buddies that do diesel fixing, and at least you have the chance to work for a big company with plenty of opportunity to move up.

Al rite guys just got my very first Ecu tune stage 1 by SSP tuning! And my car is a 97 a4 1.8t AEB engine code, generally stock with test pipe to a magnaflow muffler and a cone air filter. Now my car boost's 5ibs max with this junkyard n75 i picked up my original n75 did 3ibs... so i installed the tune just genrally gapped my plugs to .024 and removed and installed the new ecu and let it run starts up fine runs real good secondary 02 is coded out i have a CEL for primary so i hooked up my Manual boost controller and drove the car spiked to 20 and then 22ish and i felt the fuel/ spark cutoff kick in.

I know the stock ecu boost cut off is 14.5 pounds so ye everythings working fine no problems i just wanted to know if i run my MBC inline with the bad n75 can i still work the boost to 18ibs or what???

Whats happening guys, a quick update the audi has been running a1 no problems for the last 2k miles stage 1 chip loving it! But now i think im ready for the summer and upgrading stage 2! i see some kits on the class fields so i want to ask:

Obviously the 440cc injectors are needed

3in MAF housing

Ecu tune

anything else im missing other then changing out the fuel filter just cause, btw my internals are all stock and all my "mods'' are in my sig and ill most likely source down a fmic you guys think im ready???

Excuse my ignorance, but what is SSP's stage II involve? I haven't heard of using 440cc inj on a stock turbo, unless you are saying that you are upgrading to a FT/K04. I know that B6 have a Stg I+ with larger inj but they have some leaning out problems on the '02's.

I would advise to look up what the SSP's Stg II is required to have and just go from there.

So i have yet to build the spare block and what not lol but its been a year since the a4 blew up running good with alot of supporting mods and such, only problem i had through out the entire summer were engine mounts breaking and snapping on me and so forth... the last straw was at the drag strip first time and was the last time of the night, launched a little too hard and snapped the main mounts in half and the solid snub mount with my upgraded side brackets held in!

But anyways seasons over with in a month so i thought id go back and regain my ego at the track lol, and i had bought a winter car prior so i am on a budget so i thought id try to build my very own motor mounts out of hockey pucks and heavy studs to hold them together! And so i did got one side done tonight had to drill out to a 3/8 hole on all 4 mounts but ye hear are some pictures!!!

Alrite since i have a nice reliable piece of transportation might as well do a nice gt 2870 swap in the winter since everyone else is doin them... so ye i plan on piecing the kit together, i grabbed a rebuilt gt 2870 internal wastegate, 64 trim turbo for $200 bucks from a buddy of mine, next i need to know what type of injectors and so forth would work well and NOT push a stock interal 5v over the limit...

I have read k04 tunes with 440cc injectors and such works just great. But ye can ya guys give a nice insight! time to get the build started!

I would get a proper tune. At the very least, an off the shelf tune for a gt28 series turbo. I'd try to find a used one I guess. I wouldn't run a k04 tune at all. It would work, but only for so long and it wouldn't be nearly as good as a proper tune

ray4624
10-30-2014, 08:52 PM
it really depends on the tune. Some tunes are made for a wider variety of turbos. If its a k04 specific tune then I probably wouldn't bother. I run a united motorsports tune which is advertised for a k04-gt28 series turbo with my 2871 and although conservative for my setup its real smooth and I like it so far.

The UM tune is great, for sure. But it also uses large (630cc) injectors and a 3" MAF housing, so it can take anything a GT28 can throw at it.
Most K04 tunes use small-ish injectors (like TT 386cc, or even stock injectors with 5bar FPR), and a stock MAF housing, therefore they are completely unsuited to running a BT.

Alright thanks for that insight, its almost like a 2 map program on one ecu huh? And for the best power out of a k04 what cc of injectors should i run ive heard of people running 316, 386 an 440 and so forth i already have a nice fmic, free flow exhaust intake dv, bkr7es in coils upgrade all that good stuff. What am i going to have to do to get the best results out of a k04?

Update!

Well since summer ended finally, me and the silver B5 got along pretty well minus a few ghost cel's which was solved with the infamous evap/ emission deletes, and trying to check the diff fluids with welded fill plugs not going so well, ohh and the whole keeping the daily b5 trusty and dailyable, ye that didnt go so well at all...

And this upcoming summer, its gonna be stance nation and chill for the brilliant black b5, with a nice set of staggered, stretched 35th anv. shooters! Pics down below! Stay tuned for more updates!

I got them off of hottuningusa off ebay, then come to find out they shipped out of belgium, and i paid 315 after taxes for them. Turns out they are JOMs coilovers and or knock offs but they ride great a little bit of modifications were needed for the rears to seat the oem like bumpstop setups and such.

Well, new setup ran great after ALOT of debugging was done to get her to start up and run right, in the mist of doing all the DEBUGGING i came across doing a compression test on this engine first time since i swapped it in, and lets just say the cause of blow by and hard start after the first handful of runs the blow by was a great hint. All 4 cyl were around 70 psi confirmed rings by wet test and that bumped it up to 130ish. So i have to do a clutch anyways and am going to pull the block and build it and hopefully be done before mid summer.

So my question is where can i go about finding drop in rods for an 058 AEB block to reuse with the stock pistons?

And what the wrist pin sizes and so on so forth?

Pre service position here we go again! Lmao...

If you want cheap China rods go CXRacing.com. If you want quality stuff, 034 Motorsport carries SCAT rods which alot of people have recommended. With the 058 motor you should have 20mm wrist pins. I think the AWM (06A) is when they switched to 19mm. So you should be looking at rods that are 144mm x 20mm.

Damn well its been a while since ive posted. Lets just say Instagram took over the build instead of audizine lol, but thats why i m back to post up some updates! Long story short is my Og black b5 that this build thread was about, which is about still... is finally alive, with its 60 trim t3 t04e turbo setup...

My blue a4 with the rs6 billet turbo adn rwd mod is not with us anymore, pretty much totaled her, doing a pull early morning and two vans decide to pull out right in front. So i end up getting another e36 vert as a daily and life goes on many b5s and parts car for my running bt b5 and my rwd 2.8 b5 lol.

Haha I still creep on here from time to time.

Sold the striker build because it just sat in my dads driveway an hour from where I live. Plus the discover card which had a lot of the build on it had the 0% run out Haha. I've still got most of the money and it will be going towards a track car eventually. Probably an e36 m3.

Speaking of bmw....nice pickup!

Glad to see you've still got one b5 though. I always keep my eyes open. A 4.2 swapped b5 is something that would be fun.

And hell ye man thanks! Bimmers are great daily i cant get away from these types of cars lol M3 track car is going to be too much fun, these things already feel planted on the streets let alone track days haha.

And i have seen a couple a b5 a5 4.2 swaps up for sale in my area but the asking price, your better off buying an s4 lmao.

And i do have another rwd b5 2.8, my track slut more or so drift slut lmao ill have a build page for that soon possibly!

As of September 22nd 2018, my FWD B5 pretty solid ebay build sold. After alot of money dumped in it. Most fun car ive owned. I do regret selling her but, who knows maybe ill be back one day. Since i sold her ive owned C5 corvettes, Mustang Lx, Couple B5 S4s, and now my z3. Thanks for all the help through out the years. Figured id end this thread lol with an update. Proof ebay builds last if done right and after trials of errors.
