Not feeling it for Wed. the 20th, can't get out from work that day. Still Nov. 16th for me.
What about any Sundays? Seems like a conflict for weekdays, I can't do Saturdays. If general consensus is the 16th i can just go to son on my own

My recommendation is for you guys to arrive early. I recently got one wheel repaired by him and I was the first one there in the empty parking lot. In case you've never been there, it's a ghost town of a city and the parking lot belongs to a closed down wheel/electronics warehouse. You'll be doing business outside the closed building in the parking stalls. It's a fairly nice city, just very small and quite empty. Anyhow, I got there at 9am and no one was there. By the time Son arrived around 10:15, there were 3 cars that arrived after me. I went first and was out of there in and hour. He was done in 45 min, but I waited 15 min to let the paint dry. I say get there early and get something to eat before you get there so you don't lose your place finding something to eat in that ghost town. I went and grabbed something to eat once he began working on my car. There's a pollo loco across the street and a few other places (Denny's, Wendy's, etc).

From AK47: "I noticed the way Son works on wheels is by type - so the more complex the work (mostly the color matching), the longer it'll take. I remember Glyn's rims were the fastest - just polished alloy, so no color. I also noticed he did similar color wheels simultaneously...prep one, then work on the other, then alternate. I'm not sure if any of this is actually the way he does things, but that's how it looked like to me. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it in case you want to have a more ordered way of scheduling the work."
Can everyone post the color/finish of the wheels you guys are getting repaired so maybe we can get more organization?

to the OP, in my experience organizing these things with Son it would be best for you to get that list finalized. Including what color and how many wheels. If they are multiple wheels with the same finish (i.e. vmr wheels in hyper silver) i suggest they be done at the same time. it is imperative that he gets to the wheels before the sun starts setting because you'll need at least an hour for them to dry so that the paint doesn't run.
I am trying my best to be there (i have my LSAT this saturday and that is my primary focus and the reason why i did not organize this wheel repair day), if i make it i can help you organize this thing as it seems a good amount of people are gonna show.
But again we should definitely turn this into a mini GTG, it has been a while since the socal group met up

I'm interested but I've never been to one of these so it would be great if anyone who has done this before could answer a few questions.
-If I have only 1 wheel (OEM-silver) with minor/small curb rash, how long would I have to allow for (including drying time) assuming that I got there at 9am - 1hr, 2hrs, more?
-Doe he take the wheels off the car?
-Is there any particular prep that you're supposed to do in advance to the wheel?
Thanks to all.
itsmatt33
12-03-2013, 06:37 PM
wheels are done on or off car with or without tires, it doesnt matter. you should only need 2 hours or less (his work will only be about 20 mins on your wheel)
itsmatt33
12-03-2013, 06:39 PM
EVERYONE PLEASE MAKE THIS EASY BY CLEANING YOUR WHEELS AS BEST AS YOU CAN BEFORE YOU ARRIVE,
son normally cleans them before he works but if they are already 90% clean (obviously gonna get a little dirty on the way there) it will save him and you all lots of time.
krick

Thanks to all. I may come down with two cars (A6 - minor rash on 1 OEM silver wheel and Q7 - significant rash on all 4 OEM 2 tone wheels). Will confirm in the next day or two once I know my schedule for Sun.

Dax, you're going to be first since you don't require any paint. Guys with Silver paint will be next so you guys can arrive around 10:30-11. Guys with other colors ie black/gunmetal etc can arrive a little later, I'd say around 2-3, but I'm not certain. Shoot me a text on Sunday for more accurate times.

I can't bring both cars down so it's either my A6 (minor rash on 1 OEM silver wheel) or my wife's Q7 (significant rash on all 4 OEM 2 tone silver/grey wheels). I'd prefer to bring the Q7 as it's in worse shape, but are you saying that even if I came down with it in the morning, Sun probably wouldn't get to it until the afternoon because of the 2 tone silver/grey? If so, then I'll bring my A6 down instead.

It's not really possible to get mine back to the way they were since they are machine finished and there's no way you could recreate that by hand, but he did better than I expected. I thought I was the only one who noticed that. When I got home and washed my car some time after, I couldn't tell you where the damage was if you asked me to point it out, but as I dried my wheels (I use blue shop towels), I could tell right away where the rash was. The thing is, when he's color matching, he sprays about 180 degrees of the wheel and it has a different sound when i'm drying that part of the wheel. It has the same sound like if you were to rub the blue shop towel on dry cardboard, but when I am drying the non-repaired part of the wheel, it sounds much quieter.
Either way, I'm happy with the results and no one else will know what happened just by looking at the wheels.
