I have been searching the site and web for the past few hours and haven't been able to answer my question, so I turn you guys :)
When I first got my car, when I was turning a corner, a light would come on temporarily on the side that I was turing, and it would light up the corner better. This wasn't a fog light, but is a light that is in the housing, facing out to the side.
I remember being able to activate it when I was parked in the driveway and turned my wheel to either side. It would stay illuminated for about 5 seconds and then dim out.
Trouble is, neither side is working and hasn't for quite some time. Wondering if you guys know of anything that would cause it to stop working, a setting maybe? I searched in vagcom and no luck.
Maybe it's broken?

At first I thought it would be the adaptive headlights but the way you're describing it doesn't sound so...

Make sure your light switch is in the Auto position. The cornering lights together with the adpative headlights only work if the light switch is in the Auto position. This is all documented in the user manual, btw!

It has to be the fog light. There's no other light projection other than the led ring, xenon projector, turn signal, and the amber side marker. Doesn't make any sense.

Yes, there is. Here's a pic of my headlight housing. The cornering light is circled in red. It's about at a 45 degree angle pointing outwards. Obviously the housing looks a little different on the S4, but same idea.

There's no way it's any other light than the fog light unless you have adaptive headlights, that is if we're still talking about the B8 / 8.5 platform. That picture looks like an A5 headlight, so maybe it's different in the RS5 since it has no fogs.
Cornering lights = The fog light on the side you're turning to turns on to illuminate the ground. Only active up to 40km/h
Adaptive headlights = Headlights swivel in the direction you're turning. Only active from 60km/h.

Honestly, I haven't looked close up at the S4 housing. If it doesn't have a dedicated cornering light like the RS5, then yes it would use the fog lights as an alternative.

Winner. My '14 with adaptive headlights has this.

My 13 with adaptive lighting has the light. It works at low speed when turning into driveways, or sharp bends. It works great and allows you to see 90 degrees to the side of the car. You need to have Adaptive Ligths option, and the Light swicth in the "Auto" position.
Ditto. Mine also has the lights, and works still. I've never changed my lights out of the Automatic position though.

You guys are awesome!! I read the manual, but seeing as there is so much there, never caught that it has to be in automatic setting.
First thing this am, went out and tried it, and in auto, works perfectly! Thanks everyone, has been bugging me for quite some time. I NEVER have my lights on auto, I guess I like the look of the just the LED and yellow fogs.
NOW, here is my big question, now that the first one has been answered. Why does it only work in Auto mode? I guess from my standpoint, if you turn your lights on manually, it should work as well. Audi just didn't miss the boat on this one, there was a deliberate decision to do it this way, any guesses? Could it be vagcom'd to work in auto AND in manual lights on?
I think it's a cool feature to have with the adaptive lights, thanks everyone for checking into this, these forums rock! Love the collective knowledge and testing we can do to help everyone out. Cheers!

I wondered about the same thing on my first car with adaptive lighting, but then I never took the lights out of Auto, so didn't really care. I'm not sure why one wouldn't keep the lights in Auto. During the day that turns on the LEDs and then when it gets darker it turns on the headlights. In the MMI you can control how early or late the headlights should come on or whether you want the LEDs on or not. I'm honestly wondering why there is still an ON position. OFF and Auto is really all you need.

Because with VAG com you can program your lights so that you can have your DRL's on with the fogs and not have your headlights turn on. I think that's what Nuccadoc was referring too.

^ ^ Yup! But now that is is getting darker much earlier, I really like the cornering lights, really opens things up. Might switch to auto. It just baffles me why the same functionality isn't available when you turn to on.
btw, when are you back in town?

I'm actually going to be driving my car back this time (Finally) on the 26th. I have an appointment at Glenmore Audi on the 28th to finally get my sports differential fixed!! It's been like 10 months without it, and I miss it dearly.
Last time I drove it back the floods happened and the dealership closed before I was able to have it resolved. I had to leave back to Fort St. John before they had time to fix it. I'll be finally moved back full time after Christmas.

That will be nice to feel the sport diff again, just in time for Canadian winter roads LOL!

As far as info goes, just found out that possibly the auto light sensors are connected to the same circuit as the cornering motors for the adaptive headlights. So hence the need to be in auto. Still digging...

Did not know that - had the same incidence and could not figure out what that option really did for me. Thanks for the heads up! Bizarre that it's only in "auto". I drive full lights all the time for safety. vag-com'd the rears to be on all the time. DRL's should include rears IMO.

I've also discovered that the cornering lights don't work when the fog lights are on. Headlights in 'auto', fog lights on, and cornering lights don't come on. Headlights still move with the steering wheel though. Anyone else?

Yup, found the same thing. I guess they figure you are getting some good light to the side with the fogs on, no need to have the cornering as well?
Who knows, some things we might never know. I don't think even THEY know :) Emailed Audi to ask about why only in AUTO do the lights move and cornering lights come on, and their response was "ask the dealer, they should know." Wrote back, "I did ask the dealer, they told me to talk to you!" Haven't heard back yet LOL!
