Has anyone read/heard that a tranny fluid change (NOT flush) should not be performed after a certain # of miles? I am approaching 67K miles and am considering biting the bullet and having this done. However, I have read a couple of places that there is a "point of no return" (? 70-80K miles ?) whereby a fluid change could cause significant problems do to some type of "material bonding".

Thanks for the info. I would be especially interested in hearing from anyone who did the tranny fluid change at or after 60K miles and the results achieved.

I know that the B7's use a specific fluid... from what I know you won't get all the fluid out so you have to put the same amount in that you took out. The issue here is that the fluid "expands" when heated... therefore you have to do it at a certain temp.

That "point of no return" is utter nonsense. Clean fluid never has and never will cause problems with a transmission UNLESS its the wrong fluid.

The main problem with doing a fluid change is the utterly INSANE price for OEM fluid for our ZF 6HP19 tranny. $50/l or something redonkulous! And there are no compatible aftermarket alternatives as far as I know (last time I looked was last fall).

Edit: It appears Europa carries ZF fluid for 1/2 the price of the OEM Audi stuff: http://www.europaparts.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=G060162A2

Awesome job Europa! Now where was this last year when I was going to swap my fluid out on hopes of it curing my slipping torque converter....[headbang]

Hey Charles... we literally started carrying this fluid 2 weeks ago.

ALLLLMOST makes me wish I'd kept the old b7.

NO wait, it doesn't at all, haha. Glad there is FINALLY a cheaper than OEM but still OEM fluid solution. I remember pricing out JUST fluid, filter and gasket for my old tiptronic last summer and it was $500 at its cheapest! Totally nuts!

I did mine at 65k. Trying to solve my issue, but it didn't really work. Why are you changing the fluid?

I am not necessarily trying to solve an issue; basically, just preventative maintenance. I would like to think that it would improve the hard shifts from 2nd to 3rd but that is not the reason I am changing it.

As for the point of no return lol- I changed the fluid and the trans filter on my mil's b6 at 100k. It was the first time that the fluid was changed/flushed. It was nasty- the dealer kept telling her that it was 'lifetime' fluid lol, and that changing it was bad. I used oem fluid, and it is still running pretty good for the last 30k or so.

I think that the fluid should be changed more often, and I will be doing it at 60k ( i am at 56k on my tip now.)

Yup. I always say "lifetime" means until the tranny does from sheared out and dirty fluid. It's such a bullshit term.

When I did mine, the fluid looked as black as it does in the DIY. The magnets were also full of gunk. On a side note, if you change your fluid and filter; be careful of the old filter orange rubber seal. Mine popped off and landed above the valve body. I had to pull out/ lower the valve body to get it out of there. It was the suck. [:(]

When Audi says 'lifetime' they probably meant an average span of 5 years of ownership, and 1-2 owners of the same car. But still, that is b.s.. Had my CVT fluid replaced at 27,000 miles!

I agree. It's probably all a marketing tool - if they convince Joe Q. Public that an Audi transmission never needs service, that will help increase sales.
