I just bought a double din pioneer appradio 2 unit. I also purchased the metra harness to aid in the install. Im replacing the oem symphony II deck but im not sure whether it is Bose or not. How can you tell? Also I had to swap couple of pins in the metra harness in order to get power to the hu as they did not line up with other pins on the oem harness. Now the problem is that it seems as if the stereo is powered by illumination and not by switched 12v. The stereo comes on as soon as I open the car doors and will turn off when the dome light goes off and no key. All the meanwhile works with the key on ignition position as well. Also the rear speakers are hardly audible. Again I used the metra harness and plugged in the green and purple rca's into the hu and both rear speakers work just at a very low volume compared to the fronts. Plugging in the white and grey rca's in the harness to the hu, makes no difference to sound or quality. If I change the fader to the rear and turn up the volume quite high then they sound "normal" but soon as I bring the fader back to center while the volume is up, the fronts drown out the rears. Since I had to re-pin the power harness would the rear speaker harness need to be modified as well. Can anyone offer any insight?

Yes but best you talk to Christian @ Enfig.

#1. The head units aren't Bose or non-Bose, they're the same. A BOSE system refers to the BOSE option on the chassis: amp / speakers/ wiring. Do your front speakers say "BOSE" on them?
#2. The headunit power is handled on the can bus / k-line. You have to find switched +12V and sire to the stereo harness. I think +12V constant that is already there should work.
#3. You car probably is BOSE equipped, that would explain why you don't have sound to the rear speakers- front speakers are off a HU channel, rear is run off the AMP if I recall. Your install harness isn't wired properly to accomodate the AMP / speaker circuit.

#4. You just need to straighten out the wiring and it should all work..

I am always amazed at how many people are not sure if they have Bose or not. When I had my Symphony II installed, when you turn on the car the display reads Bose if it had the Bose option enabled or not, and it's stamped on the front of the speakers.

I think you have it the wrong way around, cars with Bose all of the speakers are run off a Bose amp. The non Bose I think only the rear's are off the amp.

You might be right...but..hang on, I'm thinking- you sure? What amp do the non-bose cars have? I've never owned a non-bose car, but I did an install in one a while back and it seemed to be a standard " VW " stereo system. All speaker wires were right there behind the stereo, super easy. In the BOSE equipped installs I've done you sort of have to use RCA / preouts to get the rear speakers/ amp working..? I think- because the speaker wires aren't there?

If you search on here you will see Christian from Enfig (who runs this section) has stated the issue numerous times:

The reason it happens is because the outputs to the amp from the factory radio are much higher than most aftermarket radios.

Not only does this adapter help out low rear audio on non Bose systems it also improves the sound on Bose systems. It also takes care of speaker turn on/ Turn off pop and most engine noise.

$100 adapter http://enfigcarstereo.com/ENFIG_RWH_AUD2_HILO.html

Or you could just buy a 4 channel amp and install new speakers all around....more monies but will sound better

Here is a list of all the parts we recommend for the radio install.
There is no ignition behind the radio so I would undo whatever you did before you blow something.

The first part below is all you need to get the radio to turn on and off...
