View Full Version : Broken timing belt @ 49k!!

Watchout all of you 1.8T/Audi TT peeps! As a independent VW/Audi shop,I have never seen a 1.8T timing belt break before 50K,but yesterday a 00' TT rolled in with 49K on the odo. and a broken belt,which also means a complete cylinder head replacement if they are lucky enough not to have damaged a piston.My TT has 50K on it and was going to do my own car at 55k,BUT after seeing this,45K is what I will recommend from now on..........funny thing is,I have a Passat 1.8T in right now fro timing belt service and is 101K on original belt!! I guess it is a "GAMBLE" with a 1.8T,but I will tell you, a belt service at 45K is WAY cheaper than a new head/motor replacement! Be warned!

And this is the reason I contemplate ever buying another audi again, what a feeling knowing your timing belt is going to need to be replaced every 45K miles. I know people with bmw, and mercedes who have yet to change their belts and have about 100k miles on their cars.

Mercedes do not have timing belts,nor do any BMW's past 1990 with the M20 motor,all BMW's/Merc's have timing chains now. .....that is probably why they haven't changed them,they don't have them!lol Audi loves their timing belts!

I changed mine at around 55-60K for this very reason. Its better to change it 20K early than to snap a belt and have your pistons munch your valves into your head.

The shop that did mine set it off a tooth though. The car ran great at high rpms but was lagging down low. I had to pull the belt and reset the timing myself and everything has seemed fine since but I'm willing to wager they screwed something up before I got it back. My compression has been a little low in 1 cylinder ever since they worked on it.

my aunt just changed her timing best on her 99 2.8 A6. 180,000 miles, i almost flipped when i learned it lasted that long. I had mine done at 60k

Timing belts can actually last a really long time, the issue is usually caused by the tensioner.

we've seen the TTs crap h20 pumps and take out the belt at 60-70k but not that early that sucks.

Yep,I was shocked too.Upun removal the belt was shredded......tensioner,roller,water pump was all good.It seems to be a case of age more than wear.4 intake valves are bent.Will be getting new valves and lifters,I will post some pics soon.The next week after the car came in,I did my own TT at 51K and feel good that it is done now,the work to repair bent valves is a bummer........45k!!
