I always get asked what that vent is by the gear lever in the center console ... anyone know?

It's a coin holder, not a vent.

Does it pop out? It's been an enigma to me in the 9 months I've owned the car.

The search function is a wonderous tool. That took me all of 5min to find.

You know, it's hard to search for it by name when you don't know what it is. If I knew it was a coin holder, I could have searched for it. I searched as best I could before posting. There is no need to be a smartass.

I never understood why people make such a big deal and go out of their way to type "the search function is great" instead of not wasting the time on an answer to a question that is obviously so beneath them? I mean, its not like spam is that big of an issue on this forum to where we really need to crack down on miniscule posts. Just my two cents
But anyways, the only reason I knew what it was, was because Ive been in a few B8's where people had coins in them

because if we don't, people will still start threads to ask questions that have already been answered. If we answer the question then it's just feeding into that and we'll have 10+ topics all with the same answer. If we promote searching questions can be answered without having to start a new thread. The most annoying: what wheels should I get, what color should I get, what size spacers will I need.

I understand your point here, but I also understand why OP made this thread. He had no idea what to search for, kinda makes it a lot harder. Now there is a thread title someone can search that has no idea what is it.!

Now that everyone agrees that the coin holder is lame... some vendors should consider making something that's actually useful and fits in that spot. The best thing I've seen that fits is the button that adjusts damping on the KW DDC Coilovers...
How about something for us that think the coin holder is lame, but don't run KW DDC coils? [:D]

It's not a coin holder. It obviously is one of those vents for your hand when it gets sweaty like the bowling lanes have. It however only works if you have the 6 speed manual tranny. [:p]

You could remove it, shave the bottom to open the slots up and use it as a piggy bank. Imagine all the loot the next owner would find. Its like a rebate!

ive been trying to think of something else to put in that spot, but cant. I put a quarter in the slot just to say ive used the coin holder, so far its been in there for close to half a year.

How about a padded slot for a cell phone? My phone bangs around in the large slot next to the cup holders. That's annoying.

Agreed, the button for the coilovers is one of the cooler aftermarket things Ive seen for these cars, aside from the obvious stuff.

I keep my phone either:
1. With my wallet in the slot next to the cup holders. To prevent banging around, I put the phone "inside" the wallet so that both sides of the wallet cushion it against the walls. This is doubly convenient because I don't like sitting on my wallet.
2. When I'm not using both cup holders (which is most of the time), my phone (Galaxy S3) fits snugly either vertically in the rear small cup holder or between 2 of the 3 plastic "arms" in the front large cup holder.

I put my phone with my wallet beside it in the large slot. It fits pretty snuggly, so it doesn't bounce around. I guess I have a fat wallet, and not the way I hoped it would be. [:p]

Exactly, especially when I am driving quickly on on-ramps and twisty roads.

It would be nice to have the Euro phone holder in the armrest.

I took my ashtray out and have some padding in there so the phone doesn't touch the plastic or the metal piece in there. I run the cord from the charger port under the armrest to the phone, which is better than the port right there.

Coin holder doesn't work. I put some quarters in it, first time I accelerated they all came rolling out and disappeared between the seats.

Just an idea, bass control wheel (like steering wheel volume control) or knob for those with aftermarket sub/amp installed.

Exactly this. This threat helped answer this question for me not knowing what to search for.

It's funny, the answer (that it is a lame-ass coin holder that's actually just a filler plate for the parking brake location on right-jand-drive cars) is given in the first page of that thread and yet people keep debating it for 2 more pages. Just like this thread, and audizine in general.

I'm kinda glad he asked this. I completely forgot that I don't like that thing and was trying to think of what to put there. Now I'm thinking of it again.
How about something like this?

Actually you could install a 12v socket there, then use this to mount into it:

It is the crappiest coin holder known to man. I was laughing abuot it when they told me that is what it was. Shouldve just purposed it as a vent to push hot or cool air toward shifting hand when needed.

Feel like it would be too low in that position to be comfortable to look at.

it's where they put the parking brake switch on right hand drive models. the insert thingie is just to fill the hole in other markets.
what are these 'coins' you speak of? Is that like the antique hardcopy money that old people use? fascinating.

I might have to try it and see. I see what you're saying though. But if I can get my phone off my vent, that would be a plus lol.

Ah, but the more threads you have with an answer, the easier it will be to find the answer. More variations on language that describes the same thing will make it more likely a search gets a hit. And new threads started on the same subject may pick up new and valuable information from people who never saw the original thread or were not even a member of the community at the time it was created.
So... what do you say about that, Mr. Cranky Pants? [;)]
