View Full Version : Introducing the 102mm Tip Option for the AWE Tuning 3.0T Performance Exhaust
Josh/AWE

With Audi’s facelift to the B8.5 S4 and S5, the rear valence exhaust outlet area is larger. So let’s take advantage of that.
With this new valence, AWE Tuning’s team of fabricators went to work on a new tip style which would occupy this new, larger space. The result? AWE Tuning’s new 102mm tip option.

Tip options
Tip options have been expanded as follows - all of which include the AWE Tuning logo, and double walling to ensure a mirror finish even under hard usage.
• 90mm Slash Cut Diamond Black Tips
• 90mm Slash Cut Polished Silver Tips
• 102mm Slash Cut Diamond Black Tips
• 102mm Slash Cut Polished Silver Tips
All tips are individually adjustable, so stagger and depth into bumper can be set according to personal taste.
Please note: To accommodate the 102mm tips, the muffler itself had to be re-engineered, and as such, tips cannot be changed from 90mm to 102mm without the purchase of a new rear section of the system.
Questions on this? PM me for pricing.
Learn more about the new 102mm tip options, right here (http://www.awe-tuning.com/a-w-e-tuning-b8-s4-exhaust-system).

Correct, the tips used on recent AWE Tuning B8 systems is 90mm. The 102mm version is currently featured on our S5 and fills out the larger rear valence on the B8.5s, although 90mm is still available as an option.

While the rear sections were re-worked to allow for larger tips, the sound remains unchanged.

Why would you want the mufflers? I feel sure they will offer tips. They offered the 90mm to the 80mm guys when released as part of the kit.

They already said that they revised the muffler design to accommodate the larger tips and that the tips could not be swapped out.

Strange......I'm happy with the way my current AWE fits my B8.5. Any bigger and it seems like it would be next to impossible to clean the outside of the tips with the valence in the way.

if the new tips are 12mm (.472") larger in dia. they would not fit together on the existing Y-pipe off the muffler- they would be set too far in and hit each other. does that make sense?
i'm assuming the newer 102mm will probably require a wider Y-pipe off the muffler so the tips fit next to each other and are centered properly. the only way to make this work easily for the existing system would be to fabricate full rear sections so they can just remove rear section and replace.

$200 extra added to the system may be a bit high but oh well, they make the toys everyone wants. And from what was said in this thread, the mufflers has been revised as well. They put in the time and run good business. There is a price for that. Regarding $200 for tips themselves... Thats not bad at all. Mine 90mm quads were $240.

Did not say it was a bargain. I do not purchase pre-fab exhaust systems. Over many cars and trucks, I have never owned one. I go custom and save about 50% over kit prices. For the current car, I wanted really nice tips to finish it off... So I was fine with the cost of the tips. Still came in under $850 for the whole setup... I am the last person to piss away money if thats what you were implying.

Parts installed at a custom exhaust shop, yes, agreed, $200 for tips maybe not that big a deal. But to charge an additional $200 for a different option on an exhaust you're building and selling as a whole is bs. The price should be for the exhaust and whatever tip choice the customer wants and that difference should not be $200 because I don't believe it's $200 worth of additional metal to make 12mm difference. Doesn't matter if you're changing the Y pipe to fit the new tips, that's work you'd have to do anyway to fit ANY tips when you buil the exhaust, so it's a moot point.
Now, if 90mm tip owning people walked into AWE and said "I want my tips changed to 102mm ones", yes, then you can charge $200 or whatever for them because of the new parts and the labor associated with installing them. But to pay a premium of $50 per tip just as an option from the 90mm ones, a bit much, especially since the labor associated with installing them at time of fab is no different than the 90mm ones. If anything, they should be discounting the old exhaust with the 90mm tips and selling the new one at the old price if it's considered an upgrade. I think people would value this much more since the existing exhausts are already overpriced for what they are.

Actually the exact opposite would be true if the market is truly overpriced. Inflated margins mean there's opportunity for competitors to come in at a lower price.

Negative... Not in this case because the aftermarket company market for the Audi world isn't that big. So, what's happening is you have just a handful of companies basically inflating their prices because the people have nowhere else to go and they just pay it blindly.

Hey, you make a good argument. I do not disagree. It's simply part of it.
The hardest for me to swallow are the oem grilles. Especially the chicken wire RS ones all the cool kids gotta have:) They are very light duty, flimsy pieces of plastic, yet they cost $500-$1000+ dollars. I have paid around $600 for them so I'm not saying those who do pay these prices are crazy. Not relevant but the grille prices bug the fuck out of me.

Not really. In order to even offer the second option AWE has to take the time to engineer, test and jig the new parts, hold inventory of all the necessary components for both choices (in this case just jigs and tips since the rest of the exhaust is built to order), determine ways to differentiate the new tips in their manufacturing process (so you don't order 102mm tips and get 90mm tips by mistake) and educate their sales team, dealer network and customer base on the new option. This all requires physical space/time/effort and manpower they could use on other projects or to improve other aspects of their business.
In terms of just the rear section, needing to engineer the second jig, test it to make sure it works properly, design/test/order and stock a second tip option takes time and money. Those costs have to be accounted for somewhere. Yes, they need to build a y-pipe for either tip option but they could easily only offer one tip option, a 80mm Silver Tip like what was on the original S5 system, and tell anyone wanting another option tough luck. They don't have to offer options, hell it would be a lot easier for them to only do one option and pump out more volume and get slightly more economies of scale.
Now, if 90mm tip owning people walked into AWE and said "I want my tips changed to 102mm ones", yes, then you can charge $200 or whatever for them because of the new parts and the labor associated with installing them. I love when people say "overpriced for what they are". AWE sells a good amount of their 3.0T Exhaust systems. That means they are priced according to what the market will bear. If a parts is in fact too expensive, it wouldn't sell. AWE's exhaust creates enough value in the eyes of the end user to justify the purchase price. If YOU don't see the value in it, that's your opinion and fine. Don't say the part is overpriced because you don't see value in it.

So there's no competition because there's.................no competition [confused]. If the market is overpriced new companies (competition) would show up and offer more value; either lower prices for a similar product or a superior product for the same price. This is how a free market works. Sure there might be a product here or there that's out of line, perhaps these tips, but in general free markets will self correct. Suggesting there isn't competition because the prices are too high isn't correct.

Unfortunatley, this kit is a 700$ upgrade. You would think AWE would cut the B8.5 owners some slack and maybe offer some sort of exchange program to customers who have recently purchases the regular system for their B8.5 s4. Idk about you guys, buy I cant justify spending $700 just to get 12mm larger exhaust tips. Seems like highway robbery to me. I was shocked too and was thinking the exact same thing. I purchased the system back in January, and was hoping they would cut us some slack as well since we already purchased a system from them. I can't justify it either...but if it cost $200 like the upgrade on AWE's site from 90 mm to 102 mm, I definitely would've considered it. I too would've purchased the 102 mm tip if I knew in advance.

I think what would be good is if they offered something similar to the downpipes program...where you have one year from purchasing the system with the stock downpipes, and if you want to upgrade to res/non-res downpipes within a year, you get the bundled price rather than the separate price. I think you all don't understand. Your muffler sections sent cheap, so for them to offer it for 200 would be unreasonable without some kind of trade in program. At that point they would have to find a way to sell a used rear section.
With the downpipes it's not like they sold them and then offer a discount, they offer a discount because it's a completely separate piece

Simple solution would to be to sell a new "Y" that could be welded onto the out side of the muffler. That is most likely the extent of their 're-engineered' rear muffler. Or offer to do it in house for people who would send them their mufflers for a more reasonable price than $800.

A full gallery of our S4 can be found here. (http://www.awe-tuning.com/gallery/awe-tuning-project-b8-s4) Wheels were Rotiform NUE 20x9.5 but I am not sure of the offset.

I don't remember the exact weight, but they were a heavier wheel than the Forgelines on our S5. Rotiform should be able to help with that question.
