View Full Version : Name that weird sound - APR CPS maybe?

I am having an interesting sound coming under the hood ... started few days ago ... trying to figure out what it is.

I am thinking it is the APR CPS system but will confirm this coming week @ the shop. The sound starts once you open the door (which is usually when the APR CPS system turns on).

The sound from the CPS before was present but not as loud and as crazy now ... What do you guys think? I also noticed that the CPS coolant reservoir seemed empty ... but from what I read here I can really tell how much coolant is supposed to be there anyway ...

As always thanks!

Sounds like the high flow coolant pump- maybe it is on it's way out? I believe a few have had issues with it.

That is what I think as well ...

Just not sure if it would make such a sound if there is not enough coolant etc in the system? Also do you know what was the resolution on the other cases? Did they replace the pump only or?

I'd give APR a buzz or have your shop call. Richi had a problem with his pump and I believe he had it replaced.

Add more coolant to the reservoir and see if noise goes away.

Didn't you have an overheat recently/thermostat go? Is coolant reservoir low?

Yep ... I have it planned for Monday ... thanks for your help!

Did this start happening after you got your thermostat replaced? If so, the charger had to come off and your coolant hoses moved around. Recheck your CPS install and also recheck fluid levels in both the CPS reservoir and your normal OEM one. Just because you think the mechanics did a correct job doesn't mean shit. If this problem started after that, that's your missing link. Time for you to stick your head in there and figure out if they did everything right... well, that is if you do your own work. If you have no idea what's up (which I'm guessing is true since you're asking if you should add more water/coolant to your reservoir even though it's empty [rolleyes]) then you need to take it back in. Either that thing is bone dry or you have another issue. Chances are good, the Audi shop guys didn't replumb something back as it should be probably because they don't work with aftermarket supercharger cooling setups and they just went with what the book asks for.

Yep .. that also will be confirmed on Monday. Just wanted to make sure the CPS is the one to question ...

Not sure if that was necessary but if it made you feel better ...

Yea, since they had the charger off for the thermostat replacement, if they didnt know what the seperate coolant res is for, they would have just filled up the normal coolant tank. Chances are that the pump is running dry, and no coolant getting to the supercharger. I wouldnt drive the car unless you put fluid in the CPS res.

Any recommendation on the fluid type/brand etc?

Audi/VW G12(+) coolant, or for the time being, distilled water.

As I have stated before, that is the only downside to the CPS. You can lose coolant without warning.

I try and check the reservoir once a week.

Thank you, will do!

Added some distilled water (while I am waiting for the G12 to arrive) ... got the CPS system to start few times etc. The sound is still there ...

My CPS installer will have to take a look on Monday since as stated by SwankPeRFection I "have no idea what's up" [up].

Sorry dude, no real offense meant (well, maybe a little [;)]), but I get a little put off when people mod their cars, but have no idea how to mod their car. Ya know what I mean... like when you pay someone lots of money to do it all for you, but you don't take the time to learn any of it at all. I don't tend to have a ton of respect for those people in the sense that they should have a modded car. Again, this is nothing personal against you, I'm sure you're a great guy and I know you're a great photographer, but to maybe put it into a perspective you'll understand.... Do you consider someone a real photographer because they just bought a box kit DSLR and took a few photos on Auto and think that they know what they're doing? Kinda the same thing. Anyway, I hope you get your problem fixed and if you can, let the CPS installer show you where the problem is and how the system is installed on your car, so you can have a better understanding of how everything works. If my wife can pick up on all this stuff over the years from me, I know you will be able to as well... anyone can.

No I got it the first time I read what you wrote :) ... Too many hobbies at the moment to know every detail and aspect of them all ... Also some of them take priority over the others due to being more interesting to me at the moment. Currently the CPS system is not high on my list but as you mentioned I will try to know it better for the future. I absolutely agree that it is good to know.

Although I had kinda a different expectation there as far as "fire and forget" type of thing that I do not have to worry about when going for a "common" (thermostat/water pump - these days for the B8 2010 & 2011 models service). Makes me think now that I will have to worry what will the Audi service guys do to the APR Stage 3 supercharger if I have it before my warranty expires :) ... Assuming that they did something wrong now to the CPS (which we will verify soon).

Thanks for your input ... I did learn something new.

PS: By the way ... I am exactly a "photographer who just bought a box set DSLR and took a few photos on Auto". I have no real experience as a photographer and this is a pure hobby of mine :) so there are exceptions to any rule to which I do think you would need to be more understandable :) just my opinion of course.

Well, crap, maybe I didn't look close enough on your pics... maybe it's all post processing (cheater [;)]. Anyway, good to know you get what I was saying. I too have a DSLR, but as any new thing I pick up, I tend to do a bit of research and play with things fairly closely so that I can at least understand what's up. I've taken some really great close up pics with my 40mm lens at a botanical garden once with amazing bokeh and dof effects, so I know it's possible without any formal training or classes.

But ya, get to know things like the CPS that integrate with coolant and fluids because that's all maintenance related stuff. If it was a flash or an exhaust which is kinda "set it and forget it" type mod, then ya, no worries. Also, don't harp on the Audi maint guys too much if they did screw up something on the CPS unless it'll cost you money to fix and APR won't cover it. But the next time you go in for something like this in relation to an aftermarket mod that's within the system they'll have to touch, make sure you prep the mechanic on how everything is layed out, so it makes sense to him/her and they take those changes into account when fixing the OEM side of the issue. Remember that these mechanics don't spend time reading about aftermarket setups to know to recognize them when someone comes in with them, they just go to "hold my hand" Audi school and only know what the boot taught them and nothing more. Most of them are like robots in that sense... which in my opinion is a bad thing because it leads to issues like this. I think more of them should read up and familiarize themselves with aftermarket options if they're going to work on cars which have an aftermarket following. It would make them that much more valuable to a shop/dealership.

haha ... well I enjoy the post processing phase much more than the "perfect photo" phase ... I do design as another hobby so this is how I "mix and match" both. I got the basics of taking a photo/composition etc. but I do not worry myself with perfecting the shot ... at least not yet ... just having fun with various "looks" for a photo etc.

I know it's possible without any formal training or classes.

Yep ... for example if you get the Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 ... I think you must TRY REALLY REALLY hard NOT to make a perfect portrait photo/bokeh. But then I still want to make the photo more "artsy" with post processing ... that seems to excite me more for some reason :)

Will do ... and I do agree on the aftermarket reading for both me and the service reps in general ... in my case since I am still not 100% it is something they did we will see on Monday :)
