Grille looks fantastic. Props for pulling the fender badges... Such an eyesore. I would also dip the strips buy the fog grilles but you may want to leave as is to tie in. Once dropped and the ambers are gone, she is going to look great.

Really impressed with how quickly and fearlessly you fixed the crappy headlights and grille! It's almost like you've been monitoring and planning what NEEDS to be done when you buy a B8.5 S4 :)

well to be fair, I have been on the forums - and I did my old cars headlights and grille.

I would copy your set-up if I had a lighter color car, your headlights are freaking awesome. love them. Love everything about your car really.. lol

fearless, no.. I was stressed out and shaky while doing it haha. I was very careful and knew from experience certain things to avoid. But still approached the headlight mod very cautiously

Right on, and thanks!

Yeah, I agree with your take on doing my style headlights on a black car. Not really sure how you could do it without them just disappearing.

On my murdered Infiniti G37 vert, I did silver accents inside the headlights, and then had the Infiniti emblems painted the same color silver, for a black and silver accent instead of black with chrome. It would have to be something like that.

I have personally done my own headlight mods a couple times as well, old (EVO VIII) and I know what you mean! You have to be very careful and it's always a bit stressful messing with headlights.

Anyway, love the direction you're headed with the car so far! Nice and clean

got any clear closeups of them in your headlight? i didn't realized it was ACTUALLY a brushed finish when i saw them on the car, lol.

that'd be awesome if you would do that.. it'd get my ass moving on those ambers lol it's been way too long with them in. not sure why it's taken me so long.. my B7s i did right away [=(]

I have tried to capture them properly, but haven't been able to - you can't really tell that they are brushed unless your 3 feet or closer to the car. They just look like a gunmetal, even slightly lighter than that really.

How much drop? How do they compare to HR OEs?

And stupid question, but with the ambers vinyl'd, do they still flash orange?

they are a full coilover set, they are completely adjustable, so it's up to you how much drop you want.

They do, you gave to use VAG-COM to cancel them out

Did a few things, dipped the center caps, removed chrome, then sprayed, then reassembled - Think I prefer the OEM look on stock wheels, but black wheels would definitely look better with this set-up

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/photo5-2.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/photo5-2.jpg.html)

Then I went on a road trip to New Orleans, had a fantastic time, protected the front end with painters tape. Pre-trip:

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/77311c63-b90d-47f8-801c-820506a3891c.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/77311c63-b90d-47f8-801c-820506a3891c.jpg.html)

Post-trip:

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/photo7-1.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/photo7-1.jpg.html)

I re-did the grille and did the fog's as well since the front end was masked when I got back. I screwed up the dip on the grille when taping the fron-end when pushing the edge of the tape between the bumper and grille - otherwise would have washed and it would have looked like this

After a year of having plasti-dip on my grill, taking it off was a serious job. Soaked the whole thing in WD-40 which helped, but was still a bitch to take off.

thanks! I pried the clips off the headlights, then used a heat gun to heat the adhesive, then gently pulled after ~10 minutes of heating, vinyled the amber, heat the seal on the housing (not the lens), then reattached them.

Hi Okan509,

I just embarked on the mod for the amber delete (I'm going to plastidip it). But I'm already stuck trying to remove the headlight from the car. I have a 2014 and the only thing holding me up is a tube attached to the bottom of the inside corner of the housing (tear duct area). I can't figure out how to detach it. Can you help?

I was also confused when I got to this part. You simply yank harder than you normally would be comfortable with lol. I know that is not reassuring. lol

Hope this helps, sorry if it took longer than usual to respond.

Thank you, Okan509. I was confused about how it comes off. I thought it was "plugged in" somehow, but it just slides off the plastic it's around (for anyone reading this in the future).

I want to do something that I don't think anyone else has done, but before I commit to it, I want to get some thoughts. I'm thinking I'm just going to remove the orange reflector and the entire black plastic bracket it attaches to and leave it that way instead of plastidipping. This exposes more of the silver inside (which is exactly the color I wanted anyways). Yes, I know it will expose the three LEDs at the bottom that illuminate the reflector, but I already shut those off using the VAG COM cable, so they won't light up and I don't mind how it looks overall. Only negative I see is that from a certain angle, you'll be able to see a little bit of the back of the housing in the corner. This would have been obstructed by the reflector and its bracket previously.

Here's some pictures to give you an idea. Any thoughts on this? I want to make sure I'm not overlooking any functional aspect that this might interfere with.

IMO I think it looks incomplete. Definitely decent looking still, and better than having the orange. But I like the black bar, it adds to the appeal of the headlight, and then having the bulb exposed for the amber is also unattractive. Just my own opinion, however. [wrench]

Shadow, looks great, except you should have covered the LED area with a small plate or something. The larger silver area does work very well and you have a great idea going there!

Thanks Okan and Centaur. I appreciate the specific, honest feedback. It's exactly what I was expecting - some will like it, others won't. I think it will look pretty sharp, so I went ahead and did it. My opinion of it is that many people will look at the headlight and just think that's how it's designed. They won't notice anything out of the ordinary. I think covering up the LEDs will just end up drawing more attention because it won't match. But it's dark here so I won't have my final thoughts on it until tomorrow in the sunlight. I haven't touched the other headlight, so I'll be able to make a good comparison. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Ok. Here are some pictures. I like the silver a lot and think it fits perfectly with the other silver and chrome on the car. That 3/4 shot looks so clean without the orange. In person and in the photos, I really don't notice the absence of the black bracket that holds the amber reflector. Again, the exposed LEDs have been deactivated via VAG-COM.

Really interested in hearing what others think. No need to sugar coat it if you don't like it. We all have different tastes and I won't be offended.

I would not recommend anyone doing it lol. It was by far the hardest thing I have done - and it is not perfect. There is a seam right between the doors at the top, and another in the rear quarter window (naturally has a seam in the chrome, felt fitting to put one there).

I have done a bunch of DIY's. nearly everything on my previous audi and everything on this one. I would not undertake without extreme caution, tape under the windows with masking to protect paint from blade, and take your time.

I think most places quote 200 for the job. I did mine for 20 and about 5 hours of time.

Looks good, Okan. Why did you decide to wrap the trim instead of plasti-dip? Long-term durability?

thanks. I thought (wrongly) that taping everything up to dip the trim would have been more work than to just vinyl it. I hear bad things about vinyl and trim, so it's not that. Plus plastidip isn't a very pure black, I thought it might look weird after a little bit of fading

Not too big of a fan with those wheels in black but it def looks clean. Any plans for aftermarket wheels?

Might of missed it but are you dropping this car at all?

haha, don't let my current issue sway you.. it's just a binding/popping noise at low parking lot speeds when turning. it's not like it's unsafe or handling is compromised. once over 10mph, they're perfect.

in fact, if i do get swap into a 2013 S4 i'll be doing H&Rs again. i had no issues on my S5 with H&Rs either and mopz still has that set on his A5!

you do owe 5k for the time I spent consulting you. How about you just ship me the parts and we'll call it even?

Oh no, it isn't.. but I still want bags over coils. I fear I will end up with springs before coils, if I don't get bags. Bags will be far out if I do decide.

Boooomizzz... You should have put it on thicker. The more that goes on.. The easier it is to come off!

After a year of having plasti-dip on my grill, taking it off was a serious job. Soaked the whole thing in WD-40 which helped, but was still a bitch to take off.

i see the color vinyl you used differs from the matte silver housing itself. it looks better than the darker vinyls though.. those stand out too much and to me looks funny. darker only works on the B8 IMHO. i almost like the look of the guy who just completely removed the reflector itself... hmmmmm

IMO it doesn't loot at all out of place. I like that it doesn't match. If you went with a similar color it would like match the color of your car. Jeremy's car has grey one's that match monsoon. really good look IMO.
I was lucky and went out on a limb with this color, but I honestly couldn't see myself any happier with the result or any more pleased with a different color.

I tried walking boomiz through the process, but he still failed. So I don't know that I can recommend doing it anymore (encourage), but if you are determined I'll give you any advice that I can.

lol well i'm sure i can do it. i've done it 2 other times with my B7s and it looks very similar except for the vinyling- the B7s you just popped the amber out and resealed.

color matching requires painting.. and me not having them done ASAP lol. can't have the headlights open that long for a shop to paint them. also, i feel monsoon is almost too close to the matte silver inside looking at the image you showed above.. on the B8 i think it looks great, but B8.5 ambers are huge and from the side flow with the car.

i see what you mean about it trying to match too much, yet being off. that would bother me as well. any more pics of that car?

in all honesty, ANYTHING will look better than orange, haha. maybe i'll go with yours then, it almost looks like the ecodes where it stands out, but isn't an eye sore. you think carbon fiber or silver carbon fiber will look funny?

I wouldn't do silver CF, it will look like above but with the obnoxious pattern. black cf is fine, not a huge fan but it appears more like a dark grey with any distance, someone has a b8.5 monsoon with cf I think.

Going with mine is good, I love how the headlights look, applying it to certain colors changes the look though. Black is never a bad option either.

you could see how close the gunmetal p-dip is too.

and yes, anything is better than orange.

Dude, you just started what, a couple of weeks ago with Lr? You'll get it. If I can, you for sure can. In the end, come back and play with vibrance/saturation once all is done. Even tint and the other one. And you really cannot be wrong. Sometimes its fun to get whacky about it. I try and keep things IRL looking, but am trying to do some different stuff as well. Like this one from this weekend. I really like the edit....

i think black will stand out too much in a negative way.. even the CF you posted looks good up close, but from afar it looks slightly too dark to me lol. i am going with a titanium theme though, so perhaps it will tie in..

see, i actually like Bomiz's from a distance, it looks like a clear ecode lens.. but up close, it's too close but not matching the OEM matte silver.

i'm considering just getting the same as you, it's not too dark, and not too light.

Alex, that green is chromatic aberration. You can see it up on the garage door as well. Pretty severe looking, but your edits emphasized it. Higher quality lenses produce less of it. There is a camera correction panel that has controls to remove CA. Check the box that says "remove chromatic aberration" and adjust the purple and green sliders until it's gone. Don't go crazy with the sliders though, as you will get weird side effects if you go too far with them.

Very nice edit indeed mop.

Keep in mind that some of the contrast you're seeing in the far away shots is in part due to the camera. The kind I used in the referenced shots above is http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058DIDTY/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 There's also an anthracite one that you could try - http://www.amazon.com/3M-Scotchprint-Carbon-Fiber-Anthracite/dp/B00597WDN6

I was going to mention fringing, but was not aware it could be so severe;) Also thought that it mainly came from very good lenses (ie RJ's 50mm f/1.2). Also, I just noticed the CA check box. I never check it, but only adjust the slides?

I was going to mention fringing, but was not aware it could be so severe;) Also thought that it mainly came from very good lenses (ie RJ's 50mm f/1.2). Also, I just noticed the CA check box. I never check it, but only adjust the slides?

Nick is correct about watching as you slide. Especially taillights.

Not sure if the correction sliders do anything without checking the box. It may be that checking the box and adjusting the sliders do different things. I usually check the box first, then adjust the sliders if additional correction is necessary (which is pretty rare for me unless I'm using one of the sigmas [:p])

The fringing you got from that 50 was insane! L lenses use special glass that is meant to reduce chromatic aberration - that is one of the reasons that they cost so much... Fast primes are more prone to CA, but I still think something was wrong with that lens.

so I have been experimenting. I might get flamed for this, but whatever, flame on. It is just some tinkering fun, and I'm not so sure I'm going to keep it.

I wanted to fiddle with the stock air box/intake so my first take (friday) came out like this (see picture below). which is just the stock box removed, and the top of the box rotated on it's axis 90 degrees to an upward position.

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/IMG_2136.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/IMG_2136.jpg.html)

Then I realized I could use the stock inlet pieces if I just rotated the top of the air box ("heat shield" lulz) a little. (see picture below)

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/IMG_2138.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/IMG_2138.jpg.html)

Then, I got committed to the whole idea and went to my local auto store to pick up some additions. The filter is similarly sized to OEM, made by Spectre. I read some reviews and couldn't really find anything bad about it, the only thing that concerns me is it being oiled. I went ahead and did some research and seems the more popular intakes for this platform are as well (Roc-Euro being my main influence). I also picked up a breather (would keep this little guy even if I went back to OEM filter without the stock airbox).

For a final outcome of this:

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/IMG_2139.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/IMG_2139.jpg.html)

It does not incorporate the top of the air box like I previously set up, the designs did not allow it (I'll have to fiddle with it more later, I might be able to get it to work). I am still obviously using the stock piping.

All in all I would say most of the whine noise comes from removing the stock airbox (and more than likely/possibly) the piping. I have come to this conclusion because with the OEM filter or the aftermarket one, the sound was very similar with the box removed.

However, the difference in the butt dyno is completely different. With the stock air box removed using stock filters, the car felt identical to how it behaved previous to removing the box. With the new filters, it feels like it pulls harder.

That is all, feedback is appreciated, I will not take offense. open to suggestions. you will not hurt my feelings lol, I'm likely as iffy as you onlookers haha

oh and I spent 45 to do this, so ROI seems high.

This thread caught my attention due to this comment. Wanted to poise the question/idea of oiled filters being a contributing factor with the new issue of intake valve carbon contamination on direct inject cars with no valve washing. It seems to me that under continuous use and hard pulls, an oil impregnated filter would release some its oil through out its life and the oils could contact the intake valves accelerating the contamination of the intake valves.

Just a thought for the forum to mule over.

I've also read that oil should not be getting into the system if the filter is properly oiled, which I guess happens quiet often. But these spectre filters are 25 brand new, so I'd likely not even bother cleaning or lubing it. Not worth it, better off spending the 25 once a year as a maintenance fee.

lol you know I do not care at all about the stigma, I like going under the radar if possible. I like the mirrors even more on a black car with mainly black accents.

It's the only thing that ties the aluminum of the headlights with the rear valence bar, nice mid-way IMO.

Yes, very very different.

This video is with the box removed - I'm obviously in the drivers seat lol.

I can take another video with the new filters if anyone is all that concerned with the difference between OEM and aftermarket filters, but I would consider it similar to this video - a little louder, the difference in sound is mainly when driving (pre/post filters).

Good stuff Okan. The problems I have seen with MAFs getting ruined with oil has been due to over saturating with oil. It only takes a light coat to perform as intended, not a whole can of the shit on there at one time.

It is plenty loud for me at this point, but I will look into removing it (I figured it served this purpose through my experience of other piping solutions I did on my a4).

All in all I would say most of the whine noise comes from removing the stock airbox (and more than likely/possibly) the piping.
I would have to seal that off somehow, though.

it seems it has tightened up steering at slow speeds, but conversely, lightened up steering at higher speeds. feels like a rubber chicken neck while driving. was pretty content with it previously, seemed really similar to how my a4 steering felt.

Ha, yea really annoying dealing with those plastic tabs. I just did the wrap while the amber was still attached, not optimal and made it harder, but it's still possible and doesn't risk breaking that crap. Good luck! I was gonna swap the lens' but completely pussed out once I had it opened.

Yeah I just put it back without the amber and trim. I felt it wasn't clean enough and I'd have to redo the vinyl once it failed. Anything is better than amber!

mine too, it makes for fun debate though - I love both brands, but audi is in my heart.

it does and it doesn't. these were taken in auto because the lighting was bad. manual mode only permits easy use in better/perfect lighting (still working on the different settings and optimum one's for each type of shot/lighting). thanks mops, always supportive :)

The fogs are Ziza, anyone have any feedback on the brand? I've read good and bad -- http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2526576/

Got my shipment in. The MF towels are very nice. I went ahead installed the fogs.

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/IMG_2479.jpg?t=1389809742

I went throw the front of the car, I personally believe they are both easy ways to do it, but I wanted to clean around the area since waxing my car, and remove all dirt, etc.

Thought it looked cool like this: (some sort of fog delete/ grille simplification would be sweet)

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/IMG_2473.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/IMG_2473.jpg.html)

I also polished and waxed the fog light housings/lens while I was at it.

the final outcome:

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/IMG_2480.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/IMG_2480.jpg.html)

1. clay
2. compound polish
3. swirl and haze removal
4. revive
5. Liquid paint Sealant x2 coats

I will have more pictures tomorrow.

If you have any questions about how to show your car some love, hit up @Mops

Adams products are amazing. The surface is ridiculously smooth, you can get lost just running your fingers over your paint, a truly rewarding job. The car also reflects light in a different way, it has more depth, and is ultra protected.

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj208/Okan509/IMG_2487.jpg (http://s273.photobucket.com/user/Okan509/media/IMG_2487.jpg.html)

crappy photo to show some of the tint, and the paint glistening under faint garage lights.

the tint is 80% air on the front windshield, 30% on the sides, and 15% on the rear window.

Car is looking nice with the blackout theme. Could easily pass for a sleeper car.

Black is just the cleanest color for the 5 minutes after wash.
It's so worth it though. Drove a white a4 loaner today and just didn't feel right.

The yellow fogs look good and make your headlights seem whiter.

You planning to swap in the b8 a4 grille for old times sake.... :)

haha thanks. black has definitely grown on me (didn't want it to begin with), the maintenance is terrible for my OCD tendencies, but now I love it. I also think it especially fits the b8.5 more than almost any other color. (monsoon being my second choice).

I like the yellow fogs, but they make barely any difference while driving (literally you have to be looking for them when you switch them on). But, I won the ECS giveaway and I didn't know how else to spend lol.

haha, it will mke for a neat garage ornament as soon as I can get the garage set-up the way I'd like.

Thanks man

Looks good! From one LR user to another, try a few shots with less vignetting. I used to heavily rely on it for effect, but I've since gone back and re-edited. In a given set of photos, I'll probably use it on only one, and it's gotta be the right picture to truly have the effect pop. Also, keep in mind that you can adjust the roundness and feather of the vignette to make it a little less noticable but still present in the shot.

Just a thought. Beautiful S4.

This one is the perfect shot for it. Compliments the composition 100%

did a little work yesterday, decided to re-dip the grilles and rear valence. no particular reason for the front grille, but the gloss paint I did the fogs with chipped in less than 400 miles, so I said fuck it.

Rear valence was never perfect, now it looks very near to it.

ugly peeled grille, which was a minor PITA to peel.

and a nice little touch to tie in the headlight ambers a little better. I'm thinking of either doing the rear badge to match, or removing it entirely.

I see your point with the badge, it looks really clean now. I like it. You are so right, only probably 1% of the population notices the shit we do to our cars [:(]

Looked past your last PM. Just got to it [up]

Alex, love the S4 badge delete. Looks soooo much better.

weird how much I like it too, much better, the symmetry was so out of whack with it.

haha our minds think a like. I really like the front blacked out in a short term period, but I always go back to chrome (did the same on my a4 numerous times). The rear I like with nothing, but can't bring myself to do it just yet. lol

thanks [up]

some editing, tried to get that menacing peering out look. grille came out perfect, really happy with the results this time. I won't ever have to re-do it. has a good 4-5 coats and is smooth as butter. Also, loving the badge. way better than the red.

Great thread and car! looking great. I love my new/used 2011 Black S4 and just purchased some plastidip to play around with blacking out parts. I have the same 18s on for the winter, just deciding whether to dip the dull rims or not. I will start with the wheel lock thing first, as it looks great on yours dark.

Wondering if you tried taping the horizontal chrome on the grill and fog area, then dipping, so that it the design pops out and is dark behind?

I am going to play this weekend with the B8 grille (less exciting design), and make a new thread to show.

Keep having fun though!

thanks appreciate it. I personally like the all black grille, but depending on what you're going for, sometimes it is easier to peel the areas you want exposed after spraying the whole thing, then attempting to mask off certain areas.

There's a bunch of examples if you go digging. Just make sure the dip has separated between the surface you are trying to peel and the one you are trying to keep.

Cool, yea those are good points. I feel I will have a few trial and error moments, even with preparation.

The stock B8.5 grille is sick though, way nicer than the grated RS4 replicas. The B8 grille is a touch boring with the huge slab of grey plastic and the heavier vertical slats instead of horizontal. Seems to be the choice of plastidip, RS4 replica, or $1000+ for OSIR

i like that vs the red. i say debadge the rear for a cleaner look.

Not the best of pictures! If you decide to remove the Audi emblem be prepared for a small battle. It was the toughest glue I've ever worked with, and I've debadged a lot of cars!

yeah the s4 badge was a pain too, the side emblems were much easier. I love the way that looks. also accentuates the spoiler ALOT. The rings clutter it from being seen.

Thanks!

Sweet build! I do miss having a black car sometimes. Putting on a clear bra is a must on black cars if I were to do black again. Great DIY with the Amber removal. Too bad it doesn't work on A5/A6.

Didn't read entire thread, what's next?

yeah it driving me crazy! I almost am tempted to dip the whole car so I don't see swirls anymore lol. but I know I would dislike that more.

thanks man! [up]

wheels should be on and a go soon (2 months at the most). and a drop will happen too. other than that just tinkering. Might eventually mess with the exhaust, etc.

I see you have some adam's products. What do you have for a polisher? I was thinking of picking up the Griots 6" orbital.

new look for the engine bay, trying to match the exterior of the car to the interior now. Thinking of where I might add some of the brushed GM vinyl to tie in the bay. Any suggestions are welcomed!

New black air filter and the washer fluid and coolant cap have been painted black to match.

I also added a bit of vinyl to the scope on the air intake, it covers the holes that are in it as well. It's the GM that matches the other areas.

How much of the SC whine do you get with the stock intake pipe? And about dressing up the engine bay, some CF engine cover would look killer.

yeah, no thanks. price is ridiculous and I have no other CF on my car.

I just bought an 034 pipe, but the sound is very audible in the cabin right through 2800-4100 rmps. then tappers off as the engine noise overwhelms it. You may still be able to hear it from outside, but I wouldn't know lol

I like the S4 logo (and V6T) debadge but never Audi rings de-badge - they do not do that in Europe - only the engine or model logo.
