Hey guys, what's the typical rates for installation of a coilover set? A reputable local shop is quoting me near $700. Seems high...[confused]

Also, do you have any recommendation of shops in nor Cal? I'm in south bay.

If that includes an alignment it sounds about right. Typically about 4-5 hours at $100 an hour or so plus $150 for alignment puts them a little high but not to far out.

That quote does not include alignment. It does seem a bit high then.

Way too high! I paid $360 with an alignment and that included front control arm installation. Find another shop.

the shop close to me (vw mechanics/ rookies) wanted $350 for installation and extra $100 to level the coils so its same hight from all sided ( this sounded stupid to me ). i just did it my self.

$700 with corner balancing alignment is inline if done by a reputable shop. You get what you pay for in life.

my guy said he'd do springs for 3 hrs labor now that he's already done one set. I'd almost say that's more difficult since you have to break down the strut assembly.

he normally charges me $45/hr however the dealer I work at is nearly $120/hr after its all said and done

If alignment and corner weighting included and done by good shop, worth every penny.

Go to Sonic Motorsports in Milpitas (new address); $300 c/o install & $150 alignment - Very competent. https://www.sonicms.net/

+1 for sonic in milpitas. I just got my h&r coils installed by them today on my a4. It took like 3.5 hrs and they do good work as their shop is always filled with fancy cars. Should cost you around 350. They do alignments too.

If you are in the southbay you can go there or 034 in Fremont.

+1 on 034 as well. They did work on my Avant and it was done well and priced right.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! Sonic sounds like a solid choice. I'll check them out. $350 sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Great to read all the endorsements for Sonic and what seems like a good and fair price. On other threads some guys have griped about 034's rates. For those of you who have just recommended 034, what do you know about their rates v. Sonic's? (I sure wish Sonic was still in Mountain View to make it easier on us peninsula guys.)

Mtn View would be nice... Milpitas is not too far either, better than Fremont at least. I'm in Cupertino.

I think Sonic may be a little cheaper iirc on the shop rate, but it seems like everything may be open for negotiation anyway. Give them both a call and see what they say. OP is close to both so he really can't lose, but if you are far up the peninsula a bridge may be in your future for 034, which may even be closer for you anyway.

Yeah, for me it's the Dumbarton. Hate that thing on weekday evenings.

Correction: 101 to Montague--no better.

What part of Sac? I get up there periodically. Do you have a shop or do you work out of your home garage?

Anyone know how much I should expect to pay for coils + front & rear sway bars?

That's about right. I would take it to 034 Motorsport or hike it up to Griffin Motorwerke in Berkeley.

Then when you get it aligned and corner balanced take it to Custom Alignment in Mountain View. It will take 3 hours and they will do an amazing job. The 30 minute job at the muffler shop doesn't cut it.

We typically charge between $250-350 depending on the vehicle. $700 is definitely over priced if they're not throwing in an alignment.

Seems to me that an experienced shop should not require more than ~3 hours to do this job, so I would not expect to pay more than ~$350. Personally, I paid something like $450-$500 to get H&R OE springs installed and I feel like I got hosed, but that's what I get for a) not shopping it around, and b) not having the balls to do it myself.

EDIT: I'm referring to the coilover install alone. Not accounting for an alignment or corner balancing or anything else.
