View Full Version : Is this bullshit?

Called for a quote on a milltek exhaust today. The guy told me that with my intake and a catback exhaust the airflow to my engine will be all messed up and cause problems unless I get a flash to stage 1.
Don't I have sensors before my intake that accounts for this and adjusts my air/fuels? I think he was just trying to sell me the GIAC software to make a sale as I didn't believe an intake (which I already have installed) and a catback would mess up my engine. Am I right or is this really going to cause issues?

I'm not sure exactly what was said, but the ECU does set a torque target. As such, adding hardware will not necessarily result in increased performance without an accompanying software upgrade. There certainly are no problems with adding an exhaust and/or intake without software, but you will be leaving some power on the table.

So basically do you just want the sound?

You shouldn't have any issues.

Hi Audi403,
As Thomas mentioned there is no problem at all with running those hardware parts without software. The shop may have just meant that the a flash upgrade will help you take full advantage of them. If you like pm Thomas or I the shops name and we will give them a call to make sure everyone is on the same page.

He made two points:
1. Messing with the airflow will cause me problems
2. The gains will be less without a flash (this i know is true, I won't be getting the most out of it)
Thanks for reassuring me that an intake/catback won't screw up my engine. This upgrade would be mostly for sound obviously since its just a catback, maybe some small gains. Still unsure about the exhaust until I talk to my dealer about it. I don't want the stasis (which my dealer backs) but I don't want them to pull some garbage and try and deny possible warranty claims due to it. At some point I'd like to stage 1 it, only problem is I have 6 year/160k warranty and stasis will only warranty for something like 4yrs/60k. I'd love to stage 2 it as well so i'll just need some time to think if it's worth warranty issues.
Edit: Another rep from the shop contacted me to clear things up and was very helpful. Thanks for help guys.

Whomever this tuner is, they're dumbasses. Do they realize the 3.0T works off MAP and not MAF. There's no "airflow problems" per say. If the new ECUs set certain expectations for output numbers, then it's possible you may not be optimized for intake/exhaust, but it certainly won't cause any issues similar to what could happen with an MAF/turbo car. Share the name of this place please.

Even with stock exhaust & intake, with a Stasis V1 ECU tune, mine will pull torque (retard timing hard) on the 1-2 shift sometimes (when it is running strong). I think it needs a DSG tune.
When I had the Milltek catback on, I lost about 10 ft-lbs of midrange range torque and no measureable upper RPM improvement.

I have just an exhaust and intake as well, no tune, and I have no problems with the car. He was just trying to upsell you most likley.

exhaust and intake will not give you any problems without a tune. I will actually sound nice. But...you will loose mid-range power/toque with the exhaust if your not running a tune.

Even with an ECU tune, one can loose mid-range power/torque with the exhaust, as I did, which is ironic, since the old Milltek web site indicated one would improve midrange torque.

it all depends on what size and how narrow of pipe the exhaust is using. Most exhaust (not all) you end up loosing velocity which in turn lose of low/mid-range power.

I actually read about this, I'm thinking it was your thread. This really deters me from this system. As much as I'd like a little bit of a deeper/louder tone, it's not worth power loss. Hmm maybe ill look into other systems or try and find dyno results without a tune. I really like the deep throaty tone of the milltek, would AWE be the next deepest? I don't want something raspy or too loud so I was definitely thinking downpipes + resonated.

Seems funny to me. I ran a 13.1 stock. Now I run 12.90's. I never touchd 12's before my exhaust. They couldn't market a performance earth that made your car slower.
Awe - any help here?

Seriously - the responses about a few thousand and a 12 crack me up. If you bought the car for that, you could have bought a mustang from the 90's and have 15k total in car running 10's.
I know you bought the exhaust for sound but I just had to trololol.

Our Intake and Exhaust will work perfectly fine on an otherwise stock car.
The AWE Tuning system is good for 8hp/9tq on an otherwise stock car. The S-FLO Intake will also add power (10hp/6tq peak) without software. Software then comes in and maximizes the potential of these items.
This simply sounds like the dealer may be mistaken.

I have had intake and exhaust without tune for a long time already. No issues.

What is your explanation about the dip in power in the upper RPM band with your exhaust as a couple of people have shown in their dyno plots? Just wondering...
