I read the 1.8T has forged crankshaft and the 2.0 is cast. Anyone know? Does it really make a difference in long term durability/reliability if you don't plan to do more than just conservative mods (like a chip)?

All VVT 1.8T's have cast components... That means since '01 for most VAG Cars.
A well designed and manufactured cast piece can be as strong as a forged piece...

I don't know who is right/wrong but here's a quote from that thread:
"All VW connecting rods are forged. All VW/Audi crankshafts are forged, except the very latest 2.0L. The connecting rods and crankshaft in the VR6 3.2L engine are forged."
