View Full Version : Looked at car today.... Next step? HELP

I looked at the black A4 I've been searching everywhere for. Turns out it has a perfect exterior in great shape, I snapped a few pics of it while looking at it.

I drove it and it felt good, clutch felt better than mine, but I have 30v6 so I kind of dont know exactly how a 1.8t should feel.

Anyway, hes about 75 miles (90 mins) from me. Its got a carbon fiber hood which I will want to replace immediately so if anyone has a brilliant black and wants to swap I'd be happy to do so with no cash involved. But basically hes up in Bear Mountain area New York. Does anyone know of a good mechanic to bring the car to so that I can have them look it over? Or is it unreasonable for me to ask him to come down to Northern Jersey so I can bring it to my trusted mechanic and tell him that if my mechanic says its a go I will give him the check right there.

Any thoughts guys? Also here is one pic.
Thanks

red x. if you like everything about the car and would be willing to buy it if your mechanic says everything is ok, then i would do some research and try and find a mechanic that is somewhat close to him, <60 miles, or have him come to you

yep agreed which is why i'll be selling the body parts almost immediately. The sides I like a lot tho, I think ABT sides look good with most S4 or rs4 pieces.

wheels i have the 17' rs4 reps on my a4 now, plus those chrome things which actually are in perfect condition but i think selling both i could then buy a set of nice 19s since i'll be heading out west where the roads arent quite as bad.

i'll let all you know on the hood, theres a lot of interest

The latest update is that the seller agreed to bring the car down and have my mechanic, who is also my dad's porsche mechanic (he knows german cars) take a look at it. Since the car has about 62k miles I am going to have the following looked at and hopefully should be in order since on a 1.8 at 60k miles the following should be checked and in good shape.....

* Check manual shift and clutch interlock
* Check cooling system level
* W/W System check it over
* Check transmission for leaks
* Check brakes
* Check drive shafts and boots
* Do an OBD
* And most importantly check front end dust seals, ball joints, and tie rod ends
* replace brake fluid
* replace spark plugs

If all this is in order minus maybe a little thing here and there like I need to replace the brake fluid I would buy the car. If something big like tie rod ends need to be replaced and the seller negotiates my costs into what I pay for the car I would do it. If its big problems and the price remains firm I wuld have to pass.

Best case scenario I buy the car and I would soon come to 65k miles so I wanna see what I need to do then.

* Simple oil change, check fluid levels
* The biggest thing of all change the timing belt? Would this be the time to do it? The ECS kit, water pump and all

Sorry for the long post I just want to do my homework and buy a car that I can maintain regularly and know it has been treated well so far
