View Full Version : Finally got my frankenturbos installed

Back in December I had a nasty oil leak and an weird knocking sound coming from my 2000 A4 1.8t (ATW). My shop pulled the head to discover that cylinder 3 has some bad scratches in the lower part of the cylinder wall. Had the bottom end completely rebuilt and decided to go with an AEB head since I had one that had been rebuilt already. Delete all my EGR stuff. Got the car running but it still had an oil leak that was coming from the turbo return line. Were assuming that the turbo was leaking boost internally and forcing the oil out. So I decided that I might as well just go with the Frankenturbo. I found some ev16 550cc injectors from a ford van that a guy was converting to run on LPG, and went with the treadstone front mount intercooler(trimming was required to fit it). We used a tune from C2 motorsports that as a base runs really well. On the base tune the car runs great really smooth and the power is instant. 3" maf on stock airbox works really well and we are also using a 3" testpipe, I was already running the 2.0t coils. My shop did some data logging today to send to C2 for the final tune, power wise im hoping to be able to keep up with evo's and sti's. On the base tune we had no problems pulling away from the stock B5 S4 shop car. More to come after final tune

Ive been wanting to upgrade to 62lb injectors, blow thru maf and get a re-tune. Im running C2 software as well with my Franken, and very pleased. Been dying to get it on a dyno, but there arent any awd dynos near by. From different videos online, Im assuming Im around 240whp at the moment.

My K03 is dying and I'm currently waiting on my Frankenturbo to get here [=(]

I would not mind running a FT on my car.

FT should sponsor me.

Op, how much was the turbo upgrade all in? Without block work or head

Price list so far
Frankenturbo kit with turbo and manifold only $900
EV14 550cc injectors $100 for 4
Injector adapters $25
3" testpipe $100
Treadstone intercooler $325
Intercooler piping kit $120
I work part time at a wrecking yard so getting a 3" Maf housing wasnt a problem
C2 mortorsports tune $350
But Ive helped the shop a lot over the years so they are doing me a huge favor by only charging me for parts, but I do owe them a lot of beers
Its about $1900
I was very lucky to find a guy on ebay selling these injectors for $25 a piece with less than 10 miles. He removes them from new ford vans that are being converted to LPG.

FWIW, I don't think those injectors are 550s. They are ev14s, yes, but last I checked the part numbers of the take offs he was selling were for substantially smaller injectors.

Got a bosch number on them, or just the Ford number?

Are you doing a dyno any time soon?

I did email Bosch directly when we had a tuning hiccup to make sure they were indeed 550cc they did have an oem Bosch number Ill have to write it down when i get to the shop later. Haven't picked up the car from its final tune but hope to get on a dyno in the next month

Yeah I bought some of those Bosch Injectors that were supposed to be 550cc and had them tested. They are 320cc at 3bar and will flow 440 at 5 bar. I was very pissed. They are the same injectors they run on virtually all ford V8's except the SVT. If you think about why would Ford run 52lb injectors on a Van and run 39lb on their Cobra? Hell the Ford GT came with 52lb injectors. The new 2011-2013 5.0 Mustangs come with 34lb injectors.

Not trying to rain on your parade but a FT is not going to get you with the Evos and Sti's. Maybe some of the chipped and modded WRX but that about it. Its still a K04 turbo afterall.

If they're the ones I think they are (0280158193) they flow 346cc/min (32lb). I bought a bunch of them a few years back believing the seller, ended up having them checked out by a local injector shop.

Unless the engine makes GOBS of power, or revs STUPID high, or is designed to run E85, it wouldn't have 550cc injectors. That logic escaped me previously.

Quick update. We had to add wideband and do some more logs as we were having detonation issues as the car was running lean. As of Friday it was having a little hiccup when it was cold at about 3k rpm. when it warmed up we were able to hold 2nd and 3rd gear pulls at 20psi with no issues, happy to report it pulled hard all the way to 7k. Despite sending logs to the guys at C2 motorsports Friday at 3pm my time they were able to get a re-tune back and I should be picking the car up this Monday. Also picked up a front lip to try and hide the intercooler a little more pics and videos soon.

So .. I'm installing my new F21 kit and doing the wiring for the injectors, and I just so happened to run into another issue. The ev14's are shorter than the stock injectors. What did you did to make yours fit? I though about cutting the brackets off the fuel rail but then just laughed at myself. What's your secret?

PS.. I'm running 525's, but i'm pretty sure they are the same length as the 550's.

What's your engine code? The 550cc come in a short style which fits the later a4 and a full size which fits the aeb. Look here:
Short: http://www.blueovalindustries.com/engine/fuel/en7700.html
Long: http://www.blueovalindustries.com/engine/fuel/en8390.html

If you have an aeb, you need the ones in the second link

D**n shop ordered the wrong ones... I do have an AEB.. They ordered the shorty's(But I also got the 525's. I wonder if they make 525's for the AEB at all)... I sear, if the shorty's do not have the same adapters I'm going to be Poed(looks like they do from the pictures in the link, but I can't be sure)... He's going to get an earful today.
