So I picked up this 2000 a4 avant 1.8t quattro tip with 150k on it last weekend for fairly cheap ($900) with transmission issues, when I was looking at it the kid had mentioned that the trans slips and there's no reverse. I bought the car with the plans of swapping in a 5spd manual when I get time, then painting and doing a big turbo then maybe selling my b6 avant. Since the car was only a couple miles from my house i decided to try to drive it home, I got out of his driveway in drive and the car would go about 10mph then almost stop like it was downshifting. after a couple hundred feet of this i decided to put it into neutral and coast down a hill. Once in neutral the car started driving like it was in 3rd (45mph 3000rpm) I didnt really try to go any faster to see if it would shift because i just wanted to get it home. So after playing around with the car a little I put it in all gears including park nuetral and reverse and it went forward at different rates in every gear, so what I'm wondering is if this sounds like a bad transmission or if it sounds like a bad mfs, fluid issue, or trans computer. Im just trying to figure this out because I would like to be able to move the car around until i swap the trans and if its something simple like fluid or a mfs it might be worth fixing

so heres the car, it came with the steelies on it but one of the tires would go flat after a day so I swapped on some 16" b6 wheels I got for free with another b5 I bought

with the b6 wheels where the car has to sit now because there is no reverse or even neutral to roll the car backwards

what I noticed under the car when I was swapping out the wheels (big dent in trans pan and power steering fluid leak)

First, you really need to scan the car for trans codes with VCDS. Like for reelz.

That said, the dent in the pan may help explain this. Here is a photo of the trans with the pan removed:

You'll notice the are some important-looking solenoids and such right where that dent is. I'd wager some money that something got broke when that dent happened. Hopefully just a solenoid and it didn't break the entire valve body. I don't know how many Subaru auto trans issues we've fixed at the shop by just replacing solenoids that got crushed from people bottoming out or jacking up the car by the tranny pan.

From looking at that photo and a manual for the internals of the 01V tranmission, the solenoid that appears most likely to be damaged is the one on the corner there: MV1. From the manual it looks very probable to me that the failure/open circuit of MV1 could cause your exact symptoms. Specifically: no Reverse gear and Neutral gives 3rd gear instead.

I would do the following:
- Stop driving the car. If it is screwed up and applying 2 clutches at once when it shouldn't, you can needlessly roast the clutch packs just due to a solenoid issue. And that's just silly. And you don't want to be silly.
- Scan for codes in the TCU.
- Watch measuring blocks to see MultiFunction Switch position. PRND432. See if it all works.
- Drop the pan and see what, if anything got damaged. Maybe save the fluid if you want to just put it back in to move the car around instead of fixing the trans.
