My car has the OEM iPod integration and I picked up the iPad mini a few days ago which has Apple's new connector. Will the adapter above allow me to play my tunes through my RNSE with my iPad?
I'm curious if anyone as successfully done this as I couldn't find anything on the topic.
If I didn't search well enough please link me to the thread with the answer!

99% sure no. I dont think the RNSE has the software to read it. That cable probably would allow you to if it did though.

Crap:/ I guess I'll just put In the AUX since I coded my RNSE for it a few weeks ago lol

really corey?
i thought it would almost for sure work. the whole point of the adapter is to convert the 8 pin to a 30 pin signal...

I thought it would work too. A couple of months ago I tried a 30pin to micro USB to use my galaxy but it didn't work. I thought it was because it was only made to read IOS not android

... 30 pin to micro USB??? yeah that would never work b/c 30pin is only for ios devices. i'm not sure what purose that cord word serve, unless your phone was jailbroken then i'm sure you could transfer files across it...
i'm willing to bet you could buy it at the apple store walk to your car try it if it doesn't work take it right back and they'll probably let you return it. if not, i bet a place like best buy has a knockoff brand that u could buy and use and best buy will definitely take it back

there are variations of that little beast. None support video, some support audio, most support data.
Make sure you get one that states it will support audio and give it a go. I have one which lets me plug my iphone 5 into a 30 pin cable that goes to my head unit...at the head unit the cable splits into a usb and a 3.5 mm audio plug. I can play tunes and control my ipod functionality from my head unit. But no video.....
Video works when my wife plugs here iphone 4 into the 30 pin cable connected to my head unit.
Nice....lightning connector reduces functionality....nice upgrade apple. I do not like the new adapter (yet).

Yeah, but we have a ton of these at work since people all had iPhone 4 & 4s's and all have 5's now so that we can use old chargers and what not and the 5's dont work in any dock station around the shop. We end up just plugging in a charger (30pin converted to 8pin) next to it and then using an analog 3.5mm male/male jack.
I just figured our cars would be the same.

It was a female 30pin to male micro usb so I plug my android into my oem ipod dock in my glove box, but it didn't work unfortunatel.
The adapters that support audio might just be the one to try

I've got the integrated ipod dock as well in the glove box. I have a new gen nano, with the lightning connector, bought that little guy, but I'm not having an issue with that.. I'm having an issue with the factory headunit not being able to select the ipod dock in the glovebox.. :/

So you confirmed that it will play the music from your ipod with the adapter pictured above? Did you havr to get one that specifically supports audio?

works for me, I got the 30 pin to lighting adaptor from apple for 29.99 and did it with my oem ipod hook up and it works just fine
I also have the 30 pin to lightning adapter in my car (Factory installed ipod adapter and RSNE). Works great for my iPad 4 and iPhone 5. Search my threads for my setup with pictures (I think if you search my name with "pandora") it will eventually come up as a thread I created.
I have the voltage adapter pushed into the glove box holder (so it charges iPhone 4+) - 30 pin female to make extender (basically a cable that allows me to have my phone in my cup holder - 30 pin to lighting adapter.
I used my same setup with a newer loner. Song names and album names showed up on the gps screen.

I use that cord on my Dice system to convert the 30pin to the lighting and it works perfectly, I'm not sure if it would transfer to the RNS-E (because I don't have one :( ) but it works perfectly on mine to give me full integration.

The 30 pin to lightning adapter works fine on the factory iPod dock. The problem is the factory iPod dock sucks.

Even the cheap eBay ones? like:

Generic ones are hit or miss from the reviews I've seen on amazon. I'd spend the 30 bucks for the Apple one and be done with it.

I got a cheap one online and it didn't work for my Dension unit. I ponied up for the $30 Apple one and it worked like a charm.
I hear the newer third party ones work better, but if you happen to get one of the ones that first came out with the iPhone 5 they didn't have the required authentication chip (http://appleinsider.com/articles/12/09/21/authentication_chips_discovered_in_teardown_of_app les_new_lightning_connector) and many third party products didn't recognized them. Basically they got you power throughput but no data could be read, so they were only good for charging.

Hmm I would rather just nut up and buy the adapter from apple instead of waste my time. Or install the aux port to use any device.

If you don't want to spend the money on a fully integrated system, just do the AUX route. Trying to get usability out of the factory iPod dock is not worth investing even the 30 dollars.

Hmm.. You have a good point. My intent with the cheap eBay adapter was to find an inexpensive workaround to listen to the music on my iPad. I'm glad I inquired about this before pulling the trigger on a junk adapter.

Why isn't it? how do you change tracks via AUX? How do you charge while listening?
I love my factory ipod adapter. Yeah, it would be nice to get the track names on my RSNE. But it is great to be able to charge and listen to music with only 1 cable.

With the AUX, you have control through the iPod and can see and search music with minimal money invested. It doesn't charge without an additional cable. That's the compromise.

If you are happy with the factory iPod dock and your factory sound system, then you really should look into a Dension iPod interface. You get track names, search, playlists, genres, artists, you name it, right through the thumb wheel and can see it in the cluster. And it charges your device. No compromises, you just have to commit to the the price.

I know this is an old thread but I've been researching this subject and came across something useful.
This item is a 30 pin ipod female to 3.5mm aux male adapter:
edit: item doesn't work. The CD player does not recognize that anything is plugged in.
states it is not compatible. However, if you read the reviews 2 owners of 2008 Audi A4 say it DOES work, 1 2009 VW owner says it also works (probably same interface). Buy at your own risk. I'll report back when I get mine and test it.

Thread bump.... My factory ipod dock doesn't recognize the old Ipod mini I bought for music only. It used to work with my daughter's iphone4 and another ipod Mini back in the day.
Any ideas why the mini is not recognized through the dock now? Can I check if it is enabled via VAGcom? Man this is frustrating as hell. [headbang]

Try another ipod mini or iphone to verify they work. If they do, then the problem is your mini. If none of them work, either the head unit isn't working with the ipod or the cable is bad.

Hmm.. I know the ipod mini plays music through the headphones and a plug-in speaker. So I'm gonna rule that out.
I may try to pop out the dock, to check the cable. Maybe it could have gotten unplugged?

Does the factory dock get audio from the 30 pin connector? If so, then the headphone output working or not working isn't related. But yes, the cable could be disconnected.

I bought a cheap one off ebay and it did not work....only charges the phone but no audio (however from the glovebox port it doesnt charge or carry audio)..
The same connector from apple works fine charges as well as audio (however In the audi there is only audio from the glovebox port)...I use it every day.
