In case you are interested: Part Number: T40138
Available with our Friends at Europaparts: http://www.europaparts.com/connector-release-tool-t40138.html
To tell you a bit more about this guy, it was specially designed by Audi to release one connector on the A6 gearbox.
Tool is really long for original use, too long to be honest for engine connectors

Screwdriver always works for me with those clips, if my thumb doesn't work first. Pushing forward while depressing the tab is a good tip, too.

This method used to work for me too until.....It's not a matter of if but when!
Especially with age, these guys are becoming really brittle

This tool will work with all engine compartment connectors.
This specific one is for the cam position sensor. Broke the tab during the last carbon cleaning.
And many more as you can see on the picture: MAF, coils, etc
Will install all new once I replace the valve cover, timing belt and carbon cleaning

I've only busted one tab so far, but this pic got me to thinking that I should replace that plug/connector one of these days - is there a "standard" part# for a 3-pin or 4-pin connector?

I stock about 15 different part number connectors here at the dealer. The one that breaks, is always the one in spot where you can't fit your hand and the pin removal tool in.

We don't have it, it doesn't look like it is a required basic tool for VW only dealers. Luckily I have authorization to order tools so yeah, I think I will order one haha.

I forget the name of the device it attaches to, but here is a pic. It is slightly lower than the HPFP and a little forward of the HPFP as well.

Two days in a row with new valuable info.....gotta love the AZ community.
That's the same one I broke during my last carbon cleaning. Kept sliding off and annoying me (CEL). Can't even recall how I secured it right now....but it wasn't elegant.
I need one of these plus whatever tool I need to replace that connector. Never dove into the electrical (connector replacements) world before....always found a way to make it work. But for some reason I want to keep the A4's engine bay looking cleaner than my previous vehicles. I must be succumbing to the AZ peer pressure....which is a good thing.

Part of the upcoming DIY will show how to unpin and replace these connectors

Phil you have a good pin removal tool for multi-sized pins? I really need one of those. I always end up doing way more wiring than I think I will.

Unfortunately I did not find a multi tool and Audi has specific extractor for their pins.
Here is an example:
Headlight connector pins

That guys works for nearly everything. One of the best $10 I've spent in a while! Even worked for the pins in the Flourescent light ballast I had to replace in my bathroom.
Edit: didn't see Phil post that pic. Phil, thats exactly what I have/linked above and they work great. Not sure why the picture on Amazon in green anodized but mine is silver like yours.

I have this in my toolbox at home. This kit mimics the factory pin removal tools we have here at the dealer. It is hands down worth every cent it costs which isn't that much. And for price reference, one replacement pin removal tool costs more than the whole kit from ecs. I think we payed a hair over $1K for the kit we use at the dealer.
