So I don't start many threads but I am uncomfortable with a recent finding associated with my rear diff and would like some feedback. I was under my car tweaking with my 034 rear sway endlinks (one had slightly twisted causing it to lightly bind) and noticed a good amount of dirt/oil caked on the bolts from the diff to the axel. I first thought my boot was torn but on inspection it is fine and there no sling of grease anywhere as I would expect from a torn boot. I removed the aluminum guard and it is clean along the inner surface so I know this is a slow seep if anything, no drip, no spray, no sling.

Now I did change my diff fluid like 7.5k mi ago with Motul 300 gear to the recommended fill level (to level with fill nut).

Did I overfill and this is the consequence?
Is that seal shot?
Or is this not a concern as no sound, everything is smooth etc.

I cleaned it and will monitor for more leak but dont want to royally eff up my drivetrain in the process, drive 60 mi daily freeway.

Thanks in advance, will put up pic when I can

Mines been doing the same, never ever a drip on the ground, but when get under her, there always residue of a leak. Had a local shop take a look and he confirmed it was what looked like a a bad seal. I hear its not hard to DIY, and they sell kits to redo seals. Since my leak is slow, I have drained and refilled my Diffy twice just to be on safe side!

Check to make sure it still has the appropriate amount of oil. If you need new axle seals, I have a pair from my ECS diff. service kit that I didn't use. I can toss them in the mail if you want them.

Sweet, I just found the B6 DIY but his leak pattern is different than mine, just the M10 bolt have a light residue.

My best bet is the seals though, I will check the level tonight,

Thanks! You have PM

Clean it (as you did) and see if it returns. Could be the threads were damaged on the plug or the diff housing and its leaking a tad. Might want to re-torque the plug too just to be sure.

Both front and rear axle seals are pretty common to leak on the older B5 and B6's car, I can't imagine that the B7 is any different now that our cars are getting older.
