Gents,

I've had trouble googling and trying to search Audizine forums for this answer.

I'm not a fan of the Audi V8 with the Timing Chain in the back, but from chatting with my mechanic in the morning he mentioned that some models come with Timing Belts in the front of the engine.

I have a lot more interest in purchasing an Audi V8 with a belt rather then a chain, in the future.

Would anyone know which Chassis or models have the V8 come with a Timing Belt in the front? Is there an engine code that has to be referenced?

I currently have a '04 A4 1.8T. I would love a V8, but that chain, i'm not a fan of.

Thanks, Happy Friday.

Why are you not a fan of the chain? The chain is superior to the belt in almost every way. Yes, some people have had tensioners go on the chain - but the cost of replacing that is similar to replacing a timing belt.

I think anything pre-06 had a timing belt. Someone else can chime in.

If the Chain was in the front, I wouldn't mind. The engine removal is almost half of the price of the job.

Pretty sure the rear timing chain driven V8's were only used in the B6/7 S4's and B7 RS4's.(possibly in the 4.2 R8 also but not sure)to allow them to fit in the 8E chassis. Just about every other Audi V8 runs a timing belt,I believe. Not 100% sure though.

AllRoad's I believe are also a chain in the back, If I am remembering correctly.
A6 sedan models are TB up front. (IE: like mine)

Not that I doubt you,as I really do not know,I'm surprised the Allroad uses the chain driven V8. The Allroad is based off the A6,no? I would think that there would be enough room in the chassis for the belt driven V8. Looking at a picture of the V8 in an Allroad,it looks exactly like the V8 in my S4 so I'd guess you are correct.

Strange they would use the chain version, tho. Crazy Germans.... [>_<]

Yeah I know... running off memory on that one and with my memory these days you never know.

BUT

I did find a reference saying S4 and Allroads are chain, A6 and A8 are belts.

The next question is... why didn't they use the more compact chain version on all models? Less maintenance etc.

From scanning ETKA it looks like the A6 and Allroad used a chaindriven 40V engine similar to the S4 engine in 2005 or maybe late 2004.
A8, A6 and Q7 all used chaindriven 32V FSI direct injection engines by model year 2007.
