View Full Version : Loud Clicking When Turning

My front axle boots are torn and have been for a while. Now I get the horrible clicking noise when I turn and sometimes when I drive straight at slow speeds.

From what I've searched this is the cv joints dying. Which would make sense given the torn boots.

Questions now are, Can I replace just the joints or do the whole axles need to go? Where can I get the joints? I briefly checked ECS and all they have is entire axles which range from $400 to $200 basically.

My car is probably worth like $200 so I really don't want to drop a grand on fixing this issue.

What's the cheapest route to curing the clicks?

Empi 1/2 shafts. Just replace the whole thing. You can do it yourself probably both sides under an 2 hours.

Don't bother with aftermarket axles. They suck.

Either buy new cv joints (keep in mind you have the small spline cv) or just find some 97-00 axles at a junkyard. Make sure the part number is exact. I got mine from tomsforeign.com for $55 each shipped. I ended up having to replace the cv boots about 4 months later but it was worth it since I had aftermarket axles on before. They cause terrible vibrations.

*Stay away from aftermarket axles including EMPI*

GKN/Loebro OR Raxle is the way to go..

Do not get aftermarket axles for A4 B5's. I've replaced both axles in my car in the last two years. When the first axle failed, I replaced it with a cheap aftermarket one for like $60 and it started clicking with in 2 weeks. I then replaced it with EMPI axle and it ran fine for some months and then failed again. Finally I bought the GKN/Loebro from Germanautoparts and it's just the exact OE axle(without Audi emblem) that came with our cars. Its more than 1 1/2 yr on GKN/loebro axles and no single issues. very solid and strong..

General question here that I think is related to these axles....

Would blown CV joints cause the car to want to jerk around violently while driving?

Replacement axles are OK, its the boots that are crap.
