Im driving home on the highway and I hear a huge pop/bang. Cars barely running misfiring like crazy. Pull over, pop hood, my spark plug is sitting on my valve cover and my coil boot is all melted and mangled and forced out. I have a picture if you want to see it. Anyways. Whats my first course of action? Is thing like a pinging/pre-detonation exploded it out due to sludge or carbon buildup igniting the a/f mixture prematurely? What should I check to make sure its alright? I need a good starting point and ideas of what this may have damaged. It was in cylinder one this happened and I have since then pulled all coils and plugs and taken a few pictures. But then it got dark out.

Damnnn thats crazy but i would first start off with a compression test to see if everything is good internally, and if you think you have carbon/sludge build up only way to find out is drop the oil pan and get to scrapping but ye any knocks when this happened??? and can you please put the pictures up!

Pictures please! That's crazy.

Aren't you from AF? You going to stick around here for a while? It seems to be pretty dead over there.

Yes I'm from AF. I found that the other spark plugs were pretty loose as well... I do have a valve cover gasket leak as well.

The plug probably just worked loose or something. I'd be most worried about the threads being mangled on the head. Fix that up, check compression, new plugs, new coil, etc.

Anyone nearby to lend me a hand checking compression? Or should I have it towed to a local shop to do so? I was hoping someone would say that walkie talkie. It makes sense for the spark plug to be all mangled just from being shot out right? I already tried threading one of the not fucked up spark plugs into cylinder 1 (where it shot out from) to see if it would grab and it seemed to grab nicely. Its not that bad. But when I pulled the spark plug out there were metal shavings on the threads. Some people told me I could tap it. Some people told me a new head is a better idea. Opinions?

Haha no i just dont know what I'm doing and uploaded all these at like 2 am. Now at court at 9 am fighting speeding ticket. Would like to get some stuff done today. Id like to do a compression test but dont have the tool.

Threads were screwed from spark plug shooting out. Tapped it with some kit. Compression test all cylinders. Cylinder 1 (spark plug shot out of) : 145, cylinder 2 : 150, Cylinder 3: 150, cylinder 4: 150. Got all new spark plugs and a new coil to replace the one that got owned by the spark plug (Which kind of sucks since I ordered the ICM delete setup just before all this happened and it came today). Running good so far.

Related issue: When the spark plug shot out the engine on the highway I noticed the speedometer stopped working. After getting it running today I took it for a ride and noticed not only was my speedometer not working but my gas gauge needle seems to be jumpy(it still reads amount of gas but seems to wander back and forth and not be steady) and it wasnt like this before that happened.

Thanks for the help.

Good news with the compression number big releif huh lol, but check all the grounds for the speedo and such

Huge relief. I dont really know where to start with the speedo lol.
