View Full Version : Just finished installing the AWE exhaust on the car!

Ok so I have to admit I really liked the sound of the car stock(for a stock sounding car). I thought it growled a fair amount when you got on it and was nice and pleasant when using as a daily driver. HOLY CRAP I had no idea this is what was missing. The car has woken up and sounds like a beast now. I finally feel like I have a V8 under the hood(going back to my 5.0 flowmaster days)(Stop judging).

The istall took me about 4 hours(not including breaks and heading to sears to find tools yadda yadda). I had an issue with stripping one of the bolts for the frame brace but ended up finding a fix for it. After that it was smooth sailing. The one thing that I noticed different from the other AWE exhausts I have installed in the past was how many pieces there were. I understand that you need to separate all the joints so you can manipulate them to fit and form to tolerances when installing but a couple of them in my opinion weren't necessary. That being said, I only used ramps and jacks to install this exhaust like usual. If I can do it like that then anyone can.

This isnt going to be a long review, you can see another one just above mine(as I write this, it could be somewhere else by now). If anyone has questions they could always just ask here. This is mainly for posting pictures and videos. Ok, just videos, Im really too exhausted(no pun intended) to post the pictures right now and you can see enough of them on the AWE website.

So heres a before and after, in the same location as requested by someone so theres no anomalies in the videos.

Clearly I dont know how to embed videos either.

How does it sound at highway speed? Louder than stock? Any droaning?

Absolutely no drone whatsoever. When you are just cruising it's silent as stock. I was doing triple digits and it was dead quiet.

Sounds good. Love the AWE Track system and Downpipes on my car. Looking forward to picking an exhaust out for the S6.

I'm a future s6/ rs5 buyer. I currently have a 2012 b8 s4 withe APR Stage 2+ ECU and Pulley. I really like the s6 but every video I search up The exhaust when accelerating is a little disappointing. Does the S6 have that deep tone when stock? How does it sound in take off?

I had a B8 S4 with the AWE exhaust. I thought it sounded amazing, very much like an exotic car. I thought the stock exhaust on the S6 sounded good for a mid size super-sedan. There was just a little bit of rumble but nothing significant. Now it truly sounds like I have a big V8 under the hood. The downshifting sound in S-mode is nothing short of thrilling. Ill try to get some driving videos soon but like I mentioned before, Im pretty lazy.

Holy crap what a difference. I don't think I'm going to make it much longer without that exhaust. I was hoping to make it at least a few months to see what else becomes available - but damn it just sounds so good.

One of the reasons I want to change the exhaust is because I've been driving manual cars my whole life so far and shift by ear. I find it very strange to try to manually shift the S6 because I can't hear the engine (when not hammering on it). This make me have to watch the tach instead of the road.

I'm hoping this exhaust will cure this problem, without giving me any regrets on long trips. Sometimes I just want to hear the stereo. My last car (E36 M3 with AA Exhaust) had an exhaust that was a little loud and required a much higher than comfortable volume on the radio to drown out the exhaust.

Any insights here?

There is no sound in the cabin at any speed while cruising. Whether youre going 40mph or 100mph, if youre steady on the throttle there is no indication you have exhaust on the car. Its not like the BMW exhausts which dont really have much R&D into them. They just create pipes that fit, sound loud and charge and arm and leg for them. There is a ton of R&D done with every exhaust made from AWE. You really get what you pay for with these guys.

If you turn on the radio all you will hear is tunes.

How does the car sound in 4-cylinder mode to you now?

I can't even hear it being in 4cyl mode, however this is because of great efforts Audi has put into the technolog of the car. This is all learned from the self-study that was circulating on the forums:

Some of the major efforts to defeat 4-cyl mode unwanted noise is as follows:

Flaps in the exhaust mufflers shut to increase exhaust velocity for better sound attenuation.

Active Noise Cancelation is tuned and calibrated SPECIFICALLY for the 4-cylinder sound of the engine through the OEM exhaust system (read: aftermarket exhaust may result in ANC actually producing sounds in the cabin because there is no cancelation to be had).

Active Engine Mounts produce counter vibrations to prevent engine vibrations from 4-cylinder mode from transmitting through the chassis.

LOL, I know, I posted the self-study. I was being sarcastic when I asked you how it sounded to you in 4cyl mode now. Point was it sounds the same with the new exhaust.

Awe products are amazing. Just had my touring exhaust added 4 days ago -- I'm still astonished! Granted I have the 3.2 A5, but it wakes up the whole driving experience. And very quiet while cruising.

Yes the S6 and S7 both have the soundakator.

HyperM3: this is a module mounted at the base of the windshield behind the dash that induces vibrations into the body as part of the motor/exhaust sound. You can find it in the 4.0TT study manual.

Hmm, wouldnt you know it. I never read that far in the study guide. Im a little disappointed now in that this thing is in my car. Either way, it does nothing to inhibit the joys of the rumble eminating from the rear of my car. No "soundakator" could ever duplicate that.

You're scaring me. I just installed a Milltek cat back system, as I was underwhelmed by the stock sound. I've only owned my S6 for a month, but I could never tell when only 4 cylinders were running. I still can't. Not to debate the merits of AWE v Milltek, but having a nice after market exhaust makes this car sound like the badass it is. It's awesome (forgive the pun).

Maybe I should have done my own self study, but it might have spooked me from changing things up. Now I'm going to make myself crazy listening for ANC attenuation. Arghhh. Oh well, at least I haven't noticed it yet.
