I have H&R coilovers on mine and the spring rates are way too soft and allow for too much body roll. Hopefully you guys can get the manufactures to offer correct spring rates for the Allroad with this build.

The Allroad lists curb weight at 3891lbs and the A4 2.0t Avant at 3814lbs. I wouldn't think the issue is the need for Allroad specific springs but that the H&R springs are not what you are looking for in terms of suspension. As long as the car is sitting at a reasonable height then the springs are not incorrect for the application, but they are designed to be that soft and work with factory dampers. I can't help myself when it comes to suspension and had to go with STaSIS Ohlins SL (Challenge) suspension and used the A4 Avant spring rates...

https://s3.amazonaws.com/zcom-media/sites/a0iE000000Deia7IAB/media/wysiwyg/Allroad/allroadsuspensionb.jpg

Completely transformed the car. Just like all the other cars I've done Ohlins based suspension in there is just nothing that compares, flat ride, firm but completely comfortable (actually more comfortable than the factory sport suspension) and the rear sway bar combined in with the kit really helps balance out some of the push these cars exhibit. I'm really impressed with the setup as my first B8/B8.5 model with this kit installed.

Cheers,

I'll try adding a rear sway. The H&R coilovers I'm running were off of my 2011 Avant. There is a chance the struts are on the way out but they were noticeably firmer on my 2011. I think the extra dampening and rebound settings on the Ohlins and the KW V3 is a major improvement over the single adjustable kit I'm running.

Thanks for the post.

Ah, so you have a used H&R coilover kit. The H&R coilovers for the A4 Avant should work on the Allroad without issue, however they will be reasonably softer and have more roll than something like the Ohlins SL. If it's really bad you may want to peak at the dampers and look for leaking oil, but generally a dead damper or two will be very obvious and not great for driving on.

The Ohlins SL do not have adjustments and in 99% of use adjustment is not needed. Dampers and springs are matched to work well together and adjustment on a suspension is something that in the end tends to lead more than a few users into "tuning" it improperly. I always tell folks to try and get a ride in cars with suspension you are considering to get the full story.

Cheers,

ok this is another great looking one. need to find out what programmer you are using to code the car. this is my first audi and have been busy, redoing the grill, wrapped the roof, have air lift struts and bags about to go in and have a cast set of 20 x 10 rotiforms and a custom forged set on order. my buddy is master certified mechanic and is curious to know what you are using for the euro tuned components.

For coding VCDS (Vagcom) from Ross-tech.

As for European components, if your tech is looking for items for the car he can contact directly via PM or email about what is available: [email protected]

No offense taken, Blake - your ride was my influence for many of my mods
Matt o"Carbon professionally done CF trim (NOT vinyl wrap) would also match well IMO.

Agree today wood trim s/b in a Euro luxury saloon - I've just loved the Brit sport cars from the very old days with the wood inlays.
I need a Bentley or Rolls - just remembered I'm retired - NOT.

Good start Alex :p!
*In case you need help:
-RS4 interior door handles (if they fit).
-Trims are personal (but i love my piano trims with instrument cluster).
-It might not fit the cars interior, but if you got the balls, alcantara dash/roof.
-B&O latest gen dash lens tweeters (DYI balls :p).
-Full interior led bulbs.
In case you still need a few other tax reduction parts, let us know :).
Enjoy the car...

The great wood trim debate[:D]

I had my eye on an Allroad locally here for about a month while I was selling the S4 Cabriolet and it sold the day after I came to get it. This car had the standard aluminum trims, sportier for sure, but still not my favorite. In order to get an Allroad with the sport package that wasn't far away we had to truck this one in and it come with wood, not much I could do about it except tell the guy I wasn't paying for it. Haven't ordered anything to replace it, but we'll see how the next month goes.

Dasquade-
RS4 Door Handles should fit and it's a good idea, thanks!
Piano Black trims are a possibility.
Alcantara, not happening this go around.
Don't feel the need to monkey with the stereo, it's okay and this car won't be packing on the miles.
LED lights in the upper lights might be nice. The lower lights appear to be LED as they have a nice blue tint to them but the upper lights are not so nice.

Thanks everyone, there's more to come so stay tuned!

Looks great Alex! (for an Allroad [:p] ).

The matte wood trim showing up in some of the Audi ranges is pretty nice. It stops fitting in when you start adding in sporting touches but it is quite nice on its own. Much nicer than the gloss wood everyone typically uses.

RS4 Door Handles should fit and it's a good idea, thanks!

I had a look at this a few months back and I seem to remember there being an issue with the passenger side door locks......perhaps RS4 handles aren't available with them? Let me know what you find out.

cory_can- Good call on the handles:

http://www.germancarbattle.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/2013-Audi-RS4-Avant-3.jpg

However the trick for the front would just be to get a driver's LHD and driver's RHD handle. I am noticing the rear handles do not have locks on the RS4 as well and my Allroad does, though I remember seeing some coding regarding not having rear door locks so probably just code them out.

On the handles I'm sure you could replace just the aluminium part into your stock rear plastic parts if need be.

05-02-2013, 01:04 PM
The handles are available now if needed. I did not order any for myself as I hadn't even looked into it at the time I was ordering up parts.

I haven't taken apart a B8 handle, but if they come apart you could swap in the handles themselves but Audi does not sell the handle itself out of the plastic surround. I found it odd anyway that there were locks on the back door handles and wouldn't mind disconnecting and coding them out.

I haven't taken apart a B8 handle, but if they come apart you could swap in the handles themselves but Audi does not sell the handle itself out of the plastic surround. I found it odd anyway that there were locks on the back door handles and wouldn't mind disconnecting and coding them out.

Cheers,

I can just order the OEM ones and fit, as I'm in Europe and only have 1 lock button ;)

Just thought I would throw it out there for you NA guys.

If it is an easy swap for the handles, you could buy the cheapest ones (without locks) and swap with what you have in the car.
Any guide price for the 'cheapest' version?
Good job on the euro-codes :).

That would look nice and your custom project was shaping up nicely, with all that work you put in. I wish there was a nice and easy option for an Avant roof spoiler bigger than original but not as much as the RS4 version.

Eurolights make a huge appearance difference and as a side benefit the lighting output and cutoff is better than North American headlights provide.

Now onto matters of sounds and performance:

The SPM Street Edition Turbo-back Exhaust was fitted up yesterday with help from Griffin Motorwerke in Berkeley (http://www.g-werke.com/). Great guys over there and recommend for anyone in the SF Bay Area to check them out for parts, service and installation.

The exhaust helps the 4 cylinder sound quite a bit better as I must admit when I first picked up the Allroad I was totally underwhelmed with the terribly boring and tinny noises emanating from it. The nice polished dual-walled SPM tips fit perfectly with the Allroad rear valence, very clean looking. Hopefully this weekend I can get some videos taken of the car to get out more information on the exhaust.

Now really getting anxious for the wheels, but for now some 17mm spacers just arrived and will have toss those on with the factory wheels.

Have a great weekend again everyone!

Looking good, Alex! I know the B8 avants are especially sensitive to exhaust drone, so I'm curious whether you'd call the SPM exhaust "drone-free" or if there's some acceptable level of drone present under load.

I have probably 10 miles on the car since the exhaust was installed, mostly on city streets, so I didn't get a ton of time on the highway to lug the thing. The 8 speed transmission is a little ridiculous to be honest in how it's geared, but when I gave the exhaust a push at 65mph in 8th there was some resonance for sure, well and the car didn't move considering it was at 1.6k rpm. Popped down to 6th and sounded great at 3/4 throttle. I also had the rear seats down and the factory exhaust clanging away in the back which kept me from being able to give the car the beans without everything sliding around in the back. I'll take the car out for a longer drive this weekend, hopefully get some videos too.

Cheers,

Taillights would come with proper plugs which are fitted to the existing wiring. Then coding is needed to separate the turn signal and taillight via [email protected].

Yup, they sorted me out in less than a day actually. Heat cycled the exhaust as well to ensure everything was adjusted properly. Just took the car for a quick drive after tossing on 17mm spacers and the exhaust sounds so much better than stock. There's a bit of drone/resonance down low passed 1/2 throttle, but I find zero need to be at 2.5k rpm at 1/2 throttle. The car doesn't move nearly fast enough to be useful at that rpm so I'm down a gear and above 3k rpm. Cruising in 7th gear at 70mph sounded good to me, 8th is ridiculous and is at 1.6k rpm and the car barely makes it up a hill at full throttle.

When you hit the brakes ---- without using turn signals ----- does the top row of lights burn red for brakes.... or do they only function as turn signals?

Here is a video of how the taillights function:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2aubyFtieo

Turn Signal - Orange Top Section Only
Brake - Center Section Only
Taillight - Lower Section
Fog Light - Inner Light (L+R)
Reverse Light - Outer Light (L+R)

This is how the RoW (Rest of World) taillights work out of North America. All this is of course not possible without [email protected] coding work. This took him about 20-25 minutes to do remotely and all functions work, no bulb out errors either. The turn signal is what is really what sets these taillights apart from North American lights. The turn signal appears red when it is not activated, but when it blinks it's extremely orange and very noticeable as opposed to the all red North American lighting.

Kits are available: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/539591-A4-S4-LED-Taillight-Package-Sale

If anyone has any questions on these lights just let me know via PM or email: [email protected]

That actually sounds really good Alex. Any drone?

I haven't put a ton of miles on the car since the exhaust went on, but so far I haven't had issues with being annoyed or bothered by drone. If the car is in far too low a gear, which the transmission likes to do in auto mode, and I put my foot the floor it is a bit boomy but there is no reason to drive like that as the car just doesn't go anywhere. On the highway with normal throttle inputs while cruising it's good to my ears.

The only way to really convey how an exhaust sounds is to do video/audio work. Will figure out the best way to do some good media for everyone. I'm happy with the exhaust and it's what I expected. It's not too loud, the sound is nice at idle, completely got rid of the terrible tinny boring sounds of the stock exhaust and I haven't been annoyed or bothered with the exhaust while cruising.

That description sounds almost exactly like the AWE Gen1 exhaust I had. If you have the opportunity to drive over a mountain pass, that would be the true test, IMO. Heading over Pacheco Pass (152), Altamont (580), or the Grapevine (I5) was simply unbearable, as the drone was constant under such load unless I revved it super high. Normal street driving in sport mode or manual was great though.

Thanks Alex. So let me ask my question a slightly different way - how uncomfortable would a 2 year old and a 10 day old baby be in the back? I can't believe I've gotten to the stage in my life where I'm even asking that!

Girlfriend's 6 year old thinks it sounds awesome and asked why it wasn't louder. Mind you I just sold an S4 B6 Cabriolet with a STaSIS cat-back, hard to beat the V8 sound and it was fairly loud, also the S4 B5 Avant with downpipes, high flow cats and a Borla makes some pretty serious noise too. The Allroad is by far the tamest out of that bunch.

I'd say it's all in how you drive. If you are driving at fairly low rpm's and lugging the car around you might get annoyed with this exhaust and probably many others in this market. I personally don't drive like that at all and if I need to give the car some gas to get around someone or moving on the highway I downshift, same with climbing a small to medium grade, downshift so I can actually get the car moving if needed. The S4 B6 V8 spoiled me slightly on instant torque in any gear on the highway.

Blake's test of doing some hill climbing is probably a good measure of drone. I think most would say my S4 B5 drones when being lugged up a hill, but it doesn't bother me at all. I know some people define drone as sort of ear popping annoyance where items in the cabin rattle, some say it's just an annoying boomy quality to the exhaust, others even go far enough to say that any cabin intrusion of noise is drone, all in how you like your car to sound.

Again I just need to do some more video/audio to give people an idea of what it sounds like. I'm pleased and more driving is in order to get a full review on the exhaust. Build quality was great, looked nice before it went on, the tips are the perfect size and shape and tucked away nicely, initial impressions on sound are good, love how it sounds at idle and WOT... more to come.

Might link up with Anthony to do some flybys or something of that nature, also just might find a nice stretch of quiet road to put the camera on a tripod to get some video/audio over the next few days.

Cheers,

This!.......it is all really subjective.

Both Blake and I were AWE Gen 1 Guinea Pigs, but I had it worse since I have the avant versus his sedan. Mine "droned" for sure, but I got used to it. I just installed a HFC which increased the "drone" noticeably. Which is another point for all to keep in mind when comparing the SPM system to other exhausts. This system is turbo-back vs. most others that are cat-back.

You would be my hero if you keep the natural ash trim. I'm a relatively young dude, but I've always loved wood trim in my car interiors. The muted finish of the natural ash inlays is far more special and upscale than a piece of black plastic or aluminum. And honestly, its a relatively dark shade of wood so it really works well. I have in my AR and love it - even the texture of it is pleasant :-)

I'd focus on getting the headliner in black. :-P

This allroad needs an aluminum RS4 grille and the new 20" wheel option for the RS4/5 available in Europe. Why not go full RS treatment with RS seats, RS carbon weave interior and RS 8 pot wave brakes.

20" wheels are coming, but not genuine Audi stuff...

Not going for the RS4 look as I don't believe the powerplant really lends itself to that type of appearance or interior. This is going to be more of the low and slow car. I've got the S4 B5 Avant in the garage to get my speed fix from.

Wheel and tire specs??

Rotiform LVS 20x10.5"
Concave Center- Brushed
Step Lip - Chrome
Hidden Hardware
Prepared for BBK clearance

Tires were 275/30 but this is too aggressive a fitment. The wheels were done a day before the show essentially. We gambled on the tires based on the fact that I am not on airbags, but it's still too much tire since I have the car fairly dumped. Rotiform was awesome enough to order tires up, get them fitted, bring the wheels and fit them up at the show on Saturday. I had to pull the wheels off at the show to leave[=(]

The wheels went back to Rotiform to have the tires pulled off so they could be returned and replaced with 255's. Then everything should be good to go. What a massive tease to not be able to drive home on them, but damn the car looked good. Probably lower the front just a tad, but want to see how the 255's look.

Cheers,

Too bad those wouldn't work as-is. The fitment looks so nice and flush. Where was it rubbing, exactly?

The Allroad plastic flares still have a lip the intrudes into the wheelwell. This is where the tire was going to rub and fairly badly in the back, enough that I didn't want to damage the flare so didn't drive it. I'd love to stick with the 275's, but without changing the offset it wouldn't work and then I'd run risks of not having the BBK fit up front when that is ready to install. I didn't want staggered wheels either so this was the solution wheel wise but just have to get 255's on.

Looks great! The brand and tire line makes a difference. What are the wheel specs? I went through a set of wheels to search for the perfect offset to run 275's on a 10.5" wheels. I'm not sure how much you drive it but if you do 255's I would go with a 35 offset if you can. A 30 would ride really rough in that width.

Wow Alex. Wow. Your allroad is so different than some of the other recent modded allroads that look great too but each is unique. It would be so cool to get them all together for a photo shoot.

06-04-2013, 09:01 AM
265 isn't a common size and a lot of tire manufacturers will just change the number of the tire without actually altering the size that much, if it all. The 255 is a known good fitment and will do for now. If I really get the hankering to go back to 275 after the BBK is installed and there is some room to shave the backpad of the wheel I might do that to eek that in. I will also look at trimming the lip a bit on the plastic wheel arch extension, but I don't want to take it down to the point that the wheelwell liner has no place to mount. With the older style plastic wheelwell liners the fender edge/lip on the inside could be trimmed right off, but with these floppy carpet ones they hang down if the edge/lip is fully removed.

Came out insane alex!!! When my car is all aired out the back wheel well catches the side as well and if we trim it you will need some sanding cleanup to keep that edge nice and smooth, as i know you know. I am running 20 x 10 et 25 so when my wheels are finally done the 30 offset should fix that. we adjusted the camber a hair in the back and its good for now. cant wait to get mine sitting on that three piece step lip...

again nice work

06-13-2013, 05:38 PM
The wheels come back tomorrow with 255/30's so we'll see if anything needs a little trim or camber adjustment. I haven't decided if the nose will come down some or the rear will come up some.

Thank you for the compliment and yours is looking great too. Anxiously waiting to see which wheels you did as well.

Wow, that looks great! Is that seriously your normal static ride height for everyday driving? It makes me scared for you to hit a bump while turning.

Lifted the nose 1/4" from those photos. The 255's made a huge difference. I did discover that hiding in the upper part of the inside of the wheel well is metal. The front is not just a plastic extension and much like a standard A4/S4 there is a metal lip that can be pulled down by a wide fitment, found out the hard way when that lip got pulled down on a large bump while turning. I rolled both front inner metal lips inwards/upwards and now there is essentially no rubbing up front except a tiny bit on sharp turns when there is a bump and it's just a little tire on plastic on the inside of the arch extension.

The rear tire doesn't rub but if I hit a big enough bump or compression the very outer most portion of the wheel lip touches the inside of the plastic arch extension. After a few drives this will correct itself as the wheel lip acts perfectly as a plastic lathe[:D]

I can approach the large speed bump on the hill here dead on and doesn't scrape the nose or the underside, it's a big speed bump as well, little surprised by that. My S4 B5 scrapes the nose and the exhaust on the same speed bump and it's considerably higher than the Allroad right now. These newer cars have great clearance underneath compared to older models.

Cheers,

Any codes? I am going to Griffen MS to have my hi-flow cat and downpipe installed. I will then do a stage II APR tune. Do you have a tune, or does that right-angle OX-sensor spacer keep it from throwing a code? Price of your exhaust seems like a great value since it's turbo-back. Cheers...

I saw you spinning a rear wheel on exit. All about the angles with driveways like that. I headed out basically going towards oncoming traffic at an extreme angle and only the very lowest portion of the left bumper touched the pavement. Other than that I just drove right out. However those bolt on hard plastic speed bumps, a little rough on the underside of the car when entering that lot.[o_o]

So far I've only seen a slow to respond O2 code and I have no software. That code came twice in nearly 2k miles, one time it corrected itself and one time a CEL came on, cleared with Vagcom after 10-15 miles. That happened right after the exhaust was on actually and so far hasn't happened again. If you have Stage 2 software it shouldn't be an issue with the CEL. I like the exhaust and it is definitely a good deal considering it's a full TBE. Good sale going on right now too!

Still absolutely amazing he only managed to hit the wheel lip and nothing else. Still a pain in the arse and the guy was far from pleasant, nor apologetic in any way. It happened a notoriously frustrating side street to get out of outside of the Rutherford Grille. The side street he was on can take 5+ minutes to cross traffic to get out of because the main road I was on is always solidly packed, plus there is a turn lane to enter the side street which is where I came from so people are routinely blocked by other people waiting to turn into the side street from the main road. I suspect he was looking the other way as I approached and when he started to creep out thinking it was clear one way and then looked over his shoulder where I had just come from to see if it was clear, though he still should have seen me. I think it was a combination of frustration of waiting and just jumping the gun. Though he did say that if I wasn't in my fancy car "zipping around" it never would have happened. He had a stop sign, I didn't, his responsibility to ensure he can enter traffic safely and he failed to do that. Can't wait to send him a few bills and likely get little in return...

Still absolutely amazing he only managed to hit the wheel lip and nothing else. Still a pain in the arse and the guy was far from pleasant, nor apologetic in any way. Ouch is right. Did you get his insurance info? In case there's unseen suspension damage that could end up costly.

Yup, though he failed to give us a phone number or email. He was easy to find so we've already spoken to him. He was scared about me filing a big claim against him and wasn't even going to bother repairing his BMW (old, ratty, city car). Said it should very likely be as simple as a wheel rim, some labor and shipping, then an alignment.

I lifted the car up and inspected everything as much as I could here. I don't see anything bent, loose, damaged, crinkled, etc. The wheel has a tiny bit less toe-in now than the other side and the steering wheel is very slightly off to the left, which makes sense, but the car doesn't pull and drives straight. So he hit the back of the wheel with his license plate holder and it was really more of a push. I believe he just drifted into the wheel while slowly creeping out of the side street and then gave it the beans for about 1/2 a second before he realized I was there. If anything it rotated the toe link bolt or pushed the subframe a bit which would add some toe-in to the other side as well, should be pretty obvious on an alignment machine. The camber looks identical to the other side by my eye, it's actually very hard to see the toe difference side to side. I'll have Griffin inspect everything in depth before they bother with an alignment. Anything suspect is being replaced and if it ends up bigger I'll give the guy a chance to be reasonable or it's going to my insurance co to chase him down and cover the whole thing.

That sounds like a plan. Glad it was nothing more serious.

Someone hit my car and then talked shit when they were at fault would get a verbal exercise on the level of Clark Griswold on Christmas Eve.

I pointed out his error in what he did, however he refused to accept and responsibility for what he had done, all too common. He said my attitude left a bad taste in his mouth, though I'm not sure why he thought I would be perfectly pleasant with him after he hit a brand new car while being 100% at fault.

Damn that's BS for having to deal with all the issues to go with it. Car looks sweet though minus the incident.

A picture is worth a thousand words...

Yes, the extended paddles will fit the 3 spoke steering wheel. These have not been tested on the 4 spoke wheel but the part numbers do not line up to indicate they would work.
