Hey guys

A few months ago I replaced a lot of coolant system parts on my car.

Replaced:

Coolant flange
Both coolant sensors
Thermostat
New G12 50/50 coolant

Everything was going perfectly until about 3 weeks ago and now it is not coming up to temp anymore again...

Could the thermostat that I put in be bad already? Maybe a bad unit?

Don't know what else it could be...

Thanks,
Elliott

Could be any of those or even the cluster itself (rare). How is the oil temp behaving? When it's warmed up you can check the ECU and Cluster measuring blocks and compare the temp readings.

I don't really trust what my oil temp gauge is saying...I bought one of the defective units from ECS a while back when I got the car and after I installed it the warning light I had for the oil sensor went away, but the gauge still read zero all the time...only recently has it started to come to about 70c (160f). I have no idea if that's what it is suppose to be at or if it's just the sensor being faulty as it always was...what is your oil temp at when fully warmed up?

I will check it with VAG COM soon to see what the readings say.

On my '01 1.8T, the oil temp runs around 200F. A little less when it's cold out, a little more in the summer on the highway. Generally between 175 and 215-ish.

Okay thanks.

So a little update. Driving on the highway home, needle never moved off the pin the whole way (I still had heat from the vents, though). Then I started on smaller roads and it went up a bit...Also scanned it for codes.

Because oil and coolant are both running cold, it is most likely that the thermostat is faulty. I would recommend a Behr or OEM t-stat. The genuine part is only about $10 more.

That's what I would think, too, but as I mentioned, the oil temp sensor is faulty and that's not the correct reading. Ughhh I hate this...all brand new parts and they've already failed.

I know the feeling. I've stopped skimping on parts lately because I just got tired of doing stuff twice.

Yeah...oh well...ordered a new thermostat so it should be here soon.

What kind of exhaust setup do you have, walky? I remember we had the same boosting issue a while back and I'm starting to think that my cat is clogged. My car boosts to 17psi but still feels slow as hell. I took the cat off and it seemed pretty clogged...tried cleaning it overnight and put it back in the car...couldn't really tell a difference. Is your cat gutted?
