View Full Version : B7 Aftermarket LED Tail lights

I've tried to search through the forums and not had a great deal of luck!

Has anyone fitted aftermarket LED tail lights to their B7 sedan? Specifically an RS4? I really like the LED style but do not want to fit them to find they 'cheapen' the look of the car, or they don't work at all anyway!

These are the lights I am looking at: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AUDI-A4-S4-RS4-S-Line-B7-05-08-4-Door-Sedan-Smoked-Red-LED-Tail-Lights-Taillight-/160736735557?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item256ca7f145&_uhb=1#ht_6047wt_1163

and here is a quick chop of what it should look like in my head:
http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/v/524527_10151631356759529_961699850_n.jpg?oh=32fb4c ba00770cb03ab28c706d9113a5&oe=5165F29A&__gda__=1365674920_5f949befc88ca6a6199ecd4eb85fa85 6

Appreciate any input!

If that's the case, I'd steer clear of those eBay lights.

The ones ECS has don't don't look quite as cheap, I have no idea on quality however.

also, parts4euro sells some. But like A4, I'm not sure of the quality...

The LED pattern is much better in the posted photos in original PIC.

I think the ebay ones look more expencive than the others posted IMO anyway

Jimmy S

Yeah, I definitely prefer the style of the ones posted... They mimic the newer B8 LED taillights which suits the car IMO!

I'm pretty tempted to get a set when the time comes anyway... Just was hoping someone else would have seen/have them fitted... They have a black edge by the looks which will blend with my car nicely, and hopefully will help it not look to 'altezza' which is really my own concern.

Any clarity on what if anything would need to be done to get them working in the RS4? will it need additional resistors or anything to prevent the car whinging about them?

No, it's still a B7. Most body parts are still interchangeable.

I have seen the ebay ones. IF your worried about fitment then get ecs ones. If parts for Euro is the same as ECS than those are ok too. The ebay ones DO NOT FIT FLUSH! If that doesn't bother you then go ahead. Coderedpl had them and they just didn't fit right. I was going to get them until I saw them on his car. They look great but im the type of person that if its not flush and its hanging out or pushed in some it bothers me. ECS ones from what I read can be flush but it takes some muscle and time. Ive decided to go this route.

I have the ebay ones, no issues here. They sit flush enough with extremely minor gaps. They match the pattern in your top pic. Same ones on the Adam's Rotors S4.

Can someone find an electrical engineer and figure out a way to rewire these taillights and then market them? I would even consider getting a B7 just for the taillights (spoiler alert: I was looking for a B7 S4 anyway [>_<]

My suggestion:

(Excuse the chopping of your pic, ECS but I was curious as to what they would look like without a glare):

right tail light would be the nighttime taillight. Applied brakes would illuminate all LEDs a step brighter (like the left, only brighter).

I can get closer pics of the gaps in person.. they're minor and don't bother me much, the LED tails look so much better at night and I also don't mind the clear strip.

I may get mine smoked soon.

LEDs illuminate faster than incans. You are giving the dumb ass tail gating you more time to stop, because the lights come on quicker.

Are there LED bulbs we could just swap out?

these are for avants

Also, the rate at which incandescents light up compared to LED's is absolutely miniscule compared to the reaction time of a human being. I would rather do a mod that I can enjoy, not the people behind me.

You can definitely enjoy it. The LED pattern on the ones I have looks very OEM and the OEM taillights just look dated in my opinion.

Although, I can't say I'd spend $350 on these.. I got mine for incredibly cheap (less than $150 and in perfect shape) and I couldn't pass them up. Definitely happy I got them though. For ~$80k these cars should have had LED taillights from the factory. You gonna tell me LED taillights weren't around in 2007/8? [>_<]

Also, try this on for size. LED tail lights are on average .2 seconds faster than incandescent bulbs. At 60 mph, that .2 seconds gives a driver behind you an extra 20 ft. of stopping distance. Just food for thought.

Who ever claimed they would reverse global warming? Nothing is wrong with incandescent bulbs.. Some of us prefer the updated look for our cars with LED tail lights, for those who don't, it's easy.. don't buy them..

Where did everyone mount their resistors any pics? Also on the topic of leds not trying to thread jack but I have the ziza license plate leds from ecs and I get a bulb out error when I first start car. Anyone else have this issue, and what do you suggest I do to fix? Also no codes are being logged that I can see.

Def thread jack LOL. I have the ziza license plate lights too. Only get an error when the lights are on auto and you're in a dark enough place for the lights to turn on at startup (like a garage, or just at night) The bulb out error goes away immediately, once it senses the lights. Never a problem. Just a 1 beep and its gone. In normal daylight with lights on auto, it never gets an error. I love the ziza lights and get compliments all the time. Cheap easy mod.

There's a vagcom mod to delete this reverse light error for b8. For ur b7, u might want to try if it works.

OT: how have you "LED'd" your DRL's? Just replaced the globes? or something funkier?

If you've replaced the globes, what style globes are they? and how hard to get to them? I've had a very brief look at mine, but didn't look overly easy to get too!?

i hear that.. my 2006 $30k Acura has tons more goodies that my Rs4 lacks.. it is mind blowing.

Even my 2002 Acura (the CL Type-S) had some features the RS4 lacks. Much better navigation(with a touchscreen & mini joy stick), widows that still auto roll up after the cars off, center console that makes sense (e-brake doesn't bump up the armrest).

Anyways....I found this site recently: http://www.protuninglab.com/

So I came across this ebay listing...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audi-A4-S4-RS4-LED-Left-and-Right-Tail-Lights-B7-2005-5-2006-2007-2008-Sedan-/191225605981?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c85ef2f5d&vxp=mtr

FWIW, the LED tails from RWERKS.COM and probably from PROTUNINGLAB.COM are branded by SPYDER AUTO. As far as I could tell the lights are Altezza style and SPYDER AUTO only sells through distribution. My info is over a year old so not sure how things have changed since beginning of last year.

I should also note that I had a bulb out warning error with the inner rear set - I had to swap out the resistor with a larger one in order for it to work. Details starting @ POST #36

I use to have these on my old S4...
look nice, however after a year or so, I started getting codes, and the chrome inside the reverse light started to flake!
Eventually one or two leds would go out on one of the tail lights, but then they worked at other times...
over-all, I was happy with them...!

Ive been running the JOM lights (ECS) since last July. They look SO MUCH BETTER in person. I love the way they look. Ive seen both lights in person before making a decision and I thought the JOM version just looked better IMO.

Well the turn signals "blinkers" as you called them and reverse lights are not LED with this set. So if you're wanting to see how those look in video, it's pretty close to what OEM looks like. I can make a video of my hazard lights on and throw it in reverse. Is that what you're looking for?

I have the ECS versions from ebay, and here's my experience with them.

- If the car is left to sit for like 6 hours or more, or overnight, the next time you go to start the car, the dash lights up saying the one or both brake lights are out and the parking lights are out.

- But, if when I get in the car I step on the brake pedal for a few seconds on/off to sort of warm up the ballasts before turning the ignition to "on," I rarely get any errors.

- Running into the store/leaving the car sit for a little while results in no errors, I'm guessing because the ballasts or converters or whatever they are are warmed up and reporting proper wattage draw to the sensors.

Basically, they're nice, but they're not perfect. They were plug and play, yes, and I have communicated with the seller regarding the errors, but all he wants to do is send me a replacement set, and I doubt the next set would be any different. They fit perfectly just like OEM, it took me only a few minutes to change them out, and I have learned to deal with the occasional errors and now it's not a big deal. They look great. I also added amber LED turn signal bulbs with built-in resistors front and rear, they work perfectly and look great. Got them on amazon.

I had the same issue with my pass side city light (using the ziza led set from ECS). ECS website says bulb out issue may have to do with the 'version' of our instrument cluster. Either way, they replaced it for me several times but no dice. I ended up addeding another resistor to the pass side ziza led (simply cut out the resistor off a spare set and added it in series), and no more issue - worked fine and haven't seen any signs of overheating.

i actually purchased two sets from ECS tuning. the last set i purchased i had the autobody shop order them and install them for me when i was getting my new bumper. after less than 8 months A LOT of water starting getting inside the right side housing, i sent an email to ECS, explaining i had the shop order them for me while my car was in for repair, they basically told me something along the lines that too bad because a 3rd party were the ones that originally ordered them.

funny because the side blinkers i also bought from ECS get water inside of them too..

probably in the spring i will be order a set, but from ebay.

When you buy aftermarket taillights it's a good idea to bake the taillights in the oven, scrape off the junk bonding from the manufacturer and apply your own silicone making a secure seal.

Which light exactly are you getting a bulb out warning for, brake light, trunk mounted parking lights? Variations of this issue have been discussed across a few threads... generally speaking issue seems to be the resistance. I had an issue where my trunk mounted light wouldn't turn on when i unlocked the car and had the coming home feature turned on. I added another resistor to that light and works great.

This is my issue as well but it only happens when my lights are set to "auto" and if I start the car in that auto mode, I get the bulb out error on the passenger trunk mounted side. If I quickly cycle the switch to off, tap the brake pedal and switch to auto again, the tail light comes on and the error message goes away.

If I'm driving and the lights auto switch on due to low sunlight, no issue.

I had the exact same symptoms. I rationalized the issue to be not enough voltage at start up; for some unknown reason. I even tried a different set and still had the issue - so its possible there was an electrical gremlin messing around or just the way voltage was being delivered to that light. In either case, I swapped out the 10w16h resistor that it came with and added a 25w10h and issue disappeared.

It is the driver side tail light. I noticed when I open the trunk the corner light on driver side (tail light) will lit on too. Also there are 6 LED lights flickers sometimes. Since I have replaced a new set and still did not fix the problem my next guess would be the comfort control module but not sure if I want to spend the money for a bulb out warning since everything seems to be working still......

Yeah thats my worry as well! Actually its funny the price on the first link with AUD is cheaper than the Taiwan seller in USD but the AUD gives me 3 different options. Which one would look the best? Clear red? Smoked red? Or Smoked black? They do have a picture on the silver but its not white so I'm on the fence still but I love the look! I liked the fact that the turn signals were LED. I would occasionally get a warning of bulb out but in 10 seconds if I hit the brake light the warning went away.

Here is a picture of the car with them - as you can see there was a black trim that some people liked and others did not.

Ive been following and waiting for them to make the saloon version for 5 years now (that the first time I saw Avant ones.. they were 500 british pounds at the time)!
Even sent them emails asking when they will have them.. they never responded!

Is it me or does the LED ribbon on the right taillight (hatch) look different then the left? The top-right part of ribbon looks like it's shorter then the ribbon on the left taillight. (on the white RS4 Avant)

I ordered the set from FKauto in Germany. Took two months to for it to arrive. No communications from seller until one month laters when they finally shipped. Then another month for it to go through Customs in Europe. Almost thought I lost my money on this purchase.

Mine were fresh. I had the passenger side replaced once for that flicker issue. But they were always scratch-free. The flicker issue is still happening on that side BTW. I just got used to turning lights on and off. It only happens when they're set on Auto. Or when using the "coming home feature" on the key fob.

Mine flickered too. Found some rust inside the tail light connector. Cleaned it off and the flicker went away. No errors after that. What worked for me didn't work for someone else though. Just throwing it out there.

Would you put the red tinting film over the whole light cluster .... Or just the corner portion?

I feel that if I just do the corner portion reds it will not match perfect and there will also be a noticeable crease where I put the tint.

If I did the whole light cluster in red tint to avoid a 'crease', i feel that already red part of the cluster will be darker in color than the corner portion now. :-/

And yes I'm super anal haha

I just ordered these. Should be here by beginning August. Only took me 10 months to decide LOL. I'm hoping the black lines don't look too bad and I hope fitment is good. I'm not expecting 100% but nothing noticeable far away. Also, my outer tail light is out and my brake light indicator came on is it the 1156 bulb I need? Just trying to remember from the top of my head.
