I recently removed my clutch fan and installed a new electric fan. Had no issues with that. While I was doing that I decided to take off the upper hard pipes along with the Y pipe and clean them since they were so easy to get to. Cleaned them let everything dry over night and went back to install them and about a day later this noise started. Go figure... Anyone have any idea what this noise is? It sounds awful.

Also forgot to mention it was doing this intermittent and today on a called start (the video) it seemed to be doing it non stop.

I could be wrong but, That almost sounds like a fan belt/pulley.. How long ago was your TB job?

You obviously made sure nothing upfront was touching or rubbing together right?

You tightened everything back up to TQ specs right?

just making a quick list of what it could possibly be, process of elimination if you will.. [wrench]

I did. Looks like I'm going to start taking the pipes off again. Can I remove both timing belt covers without having to put the car into service position? The TB was done around last time this year.

Power steering pump?

Does the noise go up with engine speed?

EDIT: Also, when you removed your clutch fan, did you remove the pulley or just leave it in place. If you removed it, you might need to replace your belt. The stock belt will still work with that pulley removed, but if the belt was stretched out it might be too loose.

The noise stays constant no matter what the engine speed is doing. I don't even seem to notice it while driving, but it seems to be getting worse also. I removed both timing covers and nothing changed.

When I remoed the fan clutch I left that pulley on. The only other thing I touched was the tensioner to take some slack off the belt because I was originally going to remove that pulley, but just decided to leave it.

Edit: I went back out just to double check the noise with rpms and it seems to be a lot less constant after raising the rpms. So, seems like it wouldn't be a pulley issue???

Oh I also had the car in full service position. Which means I had to add coolant when it was out back together. Used G12 and distilled water. Could there be air in the system? It kind of has a metallic sucking sound. Seems very unlikely just trying to give all the info I can.

Sounds like a pulley to me. If you can, with the car off, stick your hand down there and try to wiggle the pulleys. If one has movement that's most likely the culprit. If none of them move, get yourself a long screwdriver, something like a 2' screwdriver. You'll use this as a makeshift stethescope. While the car is running, place the tip end of the screwdriver near the pulley on something that's not moving, lol. Then place your ear on the handle and listen to what the pulley sounds like. Do this for each pulley. If one of the pulley's has a bad bearing, you'll definitely notice it this way. You may also notice that the sound will transmit throuhout the serp belt system, you want to pinpoint where it is the loudest.

Hope that helps you out, let us know what you find.

Well, shit guys. My tensioner pulley is wobbly as hell while its running. What could I have possibly done to cause this?? I also can't seem to take slack out of the belt. Looks like the front is going to have to come back off nd cost me another 3liters of coolant. Any suggestions??

It's weird you mention that because I ran the AC for the first time ever since I've owned the car just to make sure I had a fan running while my electric wasn't wired up. I don't think that's it though being my tensioner pulley looks like a number 0 when running..... damnit. Could I take off the surp belt and spin it by hand and be able to tell!?

Alright, looks like that will be my project tomorrow. Thanks for all of your help guys! [cool]

Edit: Can I also just remove the AC or is this not possible? It use to be a free mod back in my days, but I'm assured it's going to cost more money to remove it =p

You probably clocked the tensioner wrong when you installed it, that sounds like shit.

I never installed it. I was just trying to take tension off of the belt. I did tq it the wrong way orginally.. then realized my mistake and took tension off of it. Put the pin in and voila... Could this have caused an issue??? Is it really that fragile???

Also, can it be re-used or am I screwed? I feel like an idiot. Once again, thanks for the help.

Okay guys. I got the tensioner off and it's stamped with the year of my car etc so looks to be factory from 12 some odd year ago. As you can hear its got that scratching nasty noise even when hand spinning it. I just wanted to make sure this sound isn't normal before I buy one tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help.

Also, I'm going to go ahead and take the damn clutch fan pulley off. Should the new tensioner be fine since it will be missing that pulley? I've read there's no issues. Just want to double check. Thanks.

why didn't you replace the tensioner when you did the t/b job last year? bet you're wishing you did now. good luck

I didn't own the car at the time sadly enough. Luckily the previous owner did a good job with the tb though. New tensioner and water pump, so that's a plus it was done correctly. Not sure why they didn't do the serpentine belt tensioner though. Surprised its lasted 12 damn years.[o_o]
