Probably not necessary but I always change the oil when the ticker hits a grand. Did a forum search and was surprised that I didn't find much in the way of oil filter recommendations other than this (http://www.europaparts.com/oil-filter-06e115562a.html). This is the first car I've owned with this type of filter system. Typically I can find tons of stuff on filters, generally Fram bashing, but I only found a few threads on here. I've always used Wix filters in my truck and I can get that filter locally for the 3.0. Anyone using that filter?
Also, the oil change DIY that VWONG did seems to be missing its pics. Aside from the filter gaskets and crush ring for the drain plug, what else do I need to do the change? I've got the required tools. Just want to make sure I have all the consumable parts onhand.
Thanks,
Mike

1000 is WAy to early
WIX is just fine to use, no still NOT using a fram filter. No proof of quality since 1988, so no way.
In our A4 we use Mann............................

I know...it's just something I do. I'm not OCD but it's a thing I've always done. Plus, I simply enjoy working on my cars.

I'm missing something here.... If I understand correctly, you have just bought a 2013, driven 1,000 miles and you are going to do the servicing ?... Don't you have a full warranty which should cover this routine service ??
I would check with your dealership and make sure that you doing a relatively simple oil change will not affect warranty coverage..
Although in a brand new Audi, I don't see why you would want to do the maintenance, especially in light of that you are asking if you have the right tools which gives pause ....

I use the OEM filters. You can get them from ECS Tuning or EuropaParts. I also generally fill with Mobil 1 Euro 0W-40 in between the changes the dealership does every 10K
I just did an oil change on my new to me 08 A4.The filter I pulled out was a wix brand filter and I noticed it was crushed to a point it was stuck on the center housing and deforming the element.I had a 06 GTI a few years ago so I had a few filters sitting around including a wix that I never used,it seems the wix is a tad longer than the oem and gets crushed when installed.I took a pic of the new and old wix along side a Mann and you can see the height difference.I used an OEM from the dealer and the vw filter is the same height as the Mann.

Makes absolutely no sense. Factory oil is still protective and will remain so well past the 5k service. Filter will remove any metal particles from the WEAR IN process. Any microscopic particles too small for the filter to remove will actually aid in the WEAR IN process. At 1k miles, your car is not TOTALLY worn in yet. It takes about 5k for bearings and moving parts to loosen up due to wear. Before 5k wear is your friend. After 5K, your enemy. If you did the factory recommend easy Break In technique, your piston rings probably aren't complete seated either at 1K miles. IMHO, there is difference between break in and wear in. Break in applies MOSTLY to getting the piston rings of the car seated COMPLETELY. During that first 1K miles, there is some wear taking place on all the moving parts of the car. At 1k, if done properly, the piston rings should be COMPLETELY seated. Break-in over. BUT the other moving parts in the engine, trans, awd system and other systems are not ALL worn in completely. That can take as long as 5k for that to happen .

I think you missed the OPs intention. Audi does not cover nor recommend changing oil at 1K mile. The OP thinks it is beneficial to do so to get metal particles that have been generated during the first 1K miles out of the oil by replacing the filter and adding new virgin oil. That would not have been a bad thing to do in the past with cast iron cylinder walls and dino oil that used to be the norm. But things have changed

As I said, changing the oil at 1000 is just something I do. Always have, always will. I have the tools, I know how to use them, and I have a good working mechanical knowledge and aptitude. The question stems from the fact that I've never worked on a car with this type of filter, not that I've never worked on a car. If changing your oil prior to the first service, or at any service interval not specifically called out by Audi, voids your warranty I'll be stunned. Any car manufacturer that would penalize a customer for exceeding the service requirements would quickly find themselves in hot water. If I hadn't bought Audi Care ,I'd be asked to provide receipts from whatever neighborhood lube shop I used or receipts for the parts purchased for DIY installation in order to keep my warranty coverage in effect This is the first time I've ever purchased dealer maintenance and have never had a problem when requesting warranty. Just keep all your receipts. Mileage is approaching the point that I can begin to stretch out the drivetrain and this is a matter of personal preference, nothing more. Finally, no animals will be harmed in the performance of this unscheduled maintenance. PETA need not be alarmed by my rash actions. There. I think I've covered all the bases.
In the mean time, thanks AA4Q for the tip on the possible Wix filter fitment problem. I'll probably just avoid any guess work and pick up a filter and crush ring from the dealer. Ensures that I won't have to worry about any side issues while working on this car for the first time. I'll pick up some Mobil 1 0W-40, maybe some Alaskan Amber, and knock it out.
Thanks,
Mike

Its too early, so have a nut and change it. 35+ as a wrench this is plain azz stupid move.
Wix filter is fine, buy the dealers if U freak out....................
If so ANAL, change the filter only and top it off, BTW its on top, so NO NEED to top it off as its the FIRST thing to change, drain the bottom 2nd-filter first.
