this thing drives me nuts. everytime i hit the "mute" button, it turns itself back on again. when i start the car, it turns itself back on. when it finds my iphone via bluetooth audio, it turns itself back on.
for instance, i'll get in the car and turn the audio off cuz i've got my grandparents in the car or i'm in the middle of a conversation with actual people. then after a minute or 2 when it pairs itself with my iphone, it turns itself back on.
is there some sort of hard "off" function for the audio?

That is strange. In my car, once I hit the mute button, it stays muted until it hit it again. Even if i turn the car off and then back on, it remembers the mute. If I have the radio muted and I take a call on my phone, it unmutes for the phone call and then mutes again for the radio. Have you checked for a possible software update? Has there been any liquid spilled on the MMI that could be causing the issue?
Last resort is to press and hold the Mute button and the MMI will shut off completely. Not sure, but I suspect you will no longer be pared for bluetooth.

when u press and hold down the mute button ...does it turn off? does the mmi screen go to MMI logo?
if not then u have a worn out button and u would have to replace the MMI unit
its sorta common w the early year c6s... my 05 had bad issues w power button but no issues w BT and pairing and such but i didnt use BT that much
i got lucky w mine when i swapped just the button but i actually opened my mmi unit up and cleaned it and the button then worked great but i cant say everyone will be as lucky
ALSO
MMI 3G behaves much better mutes when needed lowers music volume when coming back from a dropped sat signal etc...audi fine tunes things as needed

I have a 2013 so c7
I've tried holding down the mute button and it does turn it off. But that shuts off ALL MMI. so if I pull up navi then it powes up the audio again. Same thing if I mute before turning it off. Shouldn't really be this hard to turn off audio, right?

oh sorry....admins were supposed to separate the c6 and c7 forums 2 days ago
1 i would try going into your audi setting... where u can set park tronic volume or nav anoouncement volume and see what u can adjust
2 do a MMI reset
3 maybe consider having a faulty MMI

There's no "Off" feature. If you want silence. Mute the stereo. It will always power the audio back on. This is a new thing unfortunately. I'm not sure why Audi did away with the ability to leave it muted. I'm sure you could find someone with coding experience and change the internal setting via VCDS aka Vagcom.
Yeah, I've got a c7 s6 and there is no way to keep the audio off. You can shut down the screen and mmi but as soon as you go in reverse the screen comes up and audio comes on too. My dealer told me to turn the volume to mute but even that doesn't really work, the audio comes back on but at a very low volume. I think it's just a weird over site on Audis part

Press and hold the volume knob. This will result in the sound system being turned off and the screen being retracted. The screen will pop out when the car is placed in reversed but it will retract once it is placed into drive and you move forward.
