Upgraded to the APR Stage 3 kit, and I want a reliable clutch for everyday use / track use. I've heard SouthBend are pretty good however was wondering if there were any other options out there?

Ideas?

Thanks!

First off apr=southbend=overpriced crap.

That's just my opinion. The stage one southbend I had crapped out just shy of 10k.

Currently I'm running a drakesperformance stage three clutch. Great price great quality. Been on it for about 11k now and it's rock solid as the day I put it in.

I have also heard fx clutches are decent idk never used one. But epy and many others can attest to the quality of drakes performance products and company.

I'd recommend replacing the failure-prone stock dual-mass flywheel at the same time with a lighter, single-mass unit.

We offer our 034Motorsport Lightweight Aluminum Flywheel with your choice of either SPEC or South Bend 240mm clutches.

For a Stage 3 car, I'd recommend the following options:

Lightweight Flywheel with SPEC Stage 3+ Clutch

Retail: $1,025

This is the same setup that I have run in my car since we developed the flywheels about 4 years ago. It uses a full-faced friction surface, and offers very smooth engagement with greatly increased torque capacity.

Lightweight Flywheel with South Bend SS Stage 3 Daily Clutch

http://www.034motorsport.com/images/B7_LWFW_SB_1.jpg (http://www.034motorsport.com/clutches-flywheels-southbend-clutches-flywheels-b7-audi-a4-20t-fsi-southbend-clutch-package-wflywheel-p-19871.html?utm_source=audizine&utm_medium=forum&utm_campaign=Laszlo%40034)

Retail: $1,120

This is a very popular combo that we've installed a number of in-house. the engagement is even better than the SPEC Stage 3+ due to the use of an organic friction material on the disc.

Regardless of what clutch kit you go with, replacing the dual-mass flywheel is something that we strongly recommend. The dual-mass flywheel can fail even on stock turbo cars, and isn't exactly a performance-engineered part. [drive]

Chr1sJohnson-

Have you taken a look at our JHM Lightweight Flywheel and Clutch Combo for the 2.0T? Our clutch kit would be great coupled with your current modifications!

Whats great about our kit is that it utilizes the OEM B7 RS4 Pressure Plate. This means you maintain that great OEM feel AND have all the clamp load you need to keep the stage 3 power to your wheels!

If you have any questions or would like to know more about our kit, feel free to give me a call! [up]

Light weight flywheels chatter and make the car far less drive able. If you'd like one to experiment with I have one that I removed and put the stock dual mass back in. Lwfw can cause early clutch failure as well. The gain simply wasn't worth the amount of inconvenience and discomfort it added. There are plenty of builds on here running high hp with dual mass flywheels. And not that the apr kit is bad but it simply isn't the highest power stage three out there. You'll be fine on a dual mass.

Does the lwfw have a positive effect on the feel of hp yes however the cost is high for a street car. Unless your building a track car.

I have the 034 LWFW and Spec 3+ clutch kit and it works well. [up] According to Spec the SA233F clutch that is in this kit is rated for 425 lb-ft torque capacity. APR page shows 352 lb-ft torque for stage 3 turbo kit so it should do the job. I am only stage 2 so torque numbers are lower and I am no clutch expert so take it for what it's worth.

What kind of track use do you have planned? Road course or drag?

Road Course.

Thanks for the info so far guys.. looks like im still leaning towards South Bend. I tried to reach out to Drake but no luck yet. Im trying to get a quote for a clutch and Flywheel combo, doesn't look like he does flywheels.. I'm about to have my clutch apart so I guess im about to find out if i'm going to need a new flywheel or not.

I def don't want any chatter that's for sure.

I am not a fan of hybrids, so I would go with either the 034 or Drakes. As for flywheel, I would not use the aluminum lightweight and go with a Clutch Masters single mass steel with whatever setup you choose. Though you have to ask 034 if the SPEC from 034 can use the CM steel single mass.

I am running a full face ceramattalic setup with a steel single mass, and it is butter smooth. I have not experienced a single chatter, ever, and I have tried specifically to get it to.

Whatever you choose get full faced ceramic both sides and don't get too light on the flywheel. best of luck and report back on whatever you get so we know how it worked out.

From what I gather the 034 kit uses SPEC clutch from the Coupe Quattro which bolts up to the 7A flywheel so the CM steel single mass (or any B7 flwhyeel) would not work. The 034 LWFW is designed to account for total stack height of flywheel, disc, and clutch cover. I believe this is also true for the Southbend clutch kit offered through 034 Motorsport. The flywheel pictured in the Southbend clutch kit appears to be same and has the same markings "2.0T - 7A".

I remember seeing they would make a steel single mass flywheel for this kit upon request. Maybe slightly more cost due to the extra machining time for steel vs. aluminum, but ask Lazlo.

Good info, thanks.

Also, you could ask if JHM will do a doubled sided ceramic for you also. It is as simple as having the material present when doing the riveting.

He does a clutch masters single mass for 538 shipped to your door I believe. That's what he offered me at least.

And his prices for stage three and four are
599 and 634 shipped respectively.

I'm telling you from personal experience the south bend does not hold up.
The presure plate they sent me was weaker than oem and more expensive.

Most everyone else uses an rs4 pressure plate or something of equal or better quality. Jhm and drakes for sure use rs4 pressure plates.

Also to top it off the clutch disc was completely worn in 10k. And I did that with stage one hp. I'm running much more power now and have been abusing this current clutch and it still feels brand spankin new. Don't go south bend. Do a search and just read all the complaints and they will be the same consensus low quality. To top it off they will instantly assume no responsibility if something does go wrong. Their customer service is horrible. And I purchased through apr who told me to contact the manufacturer because they didn't do anything wrong. Not bashing apr I still have and love their tune. But that was an instance where they dropped the ball big time.

Jhm and drakes are both small shops who focus on customers.

034 as well but I can't agree with aprs choice in clutches
