A friend called me a few weeks ago to tell me that his 2000 A4 just stopped running while going 80MPH down the highway. He had it towed to my garage because 1, I'm the only one he knows that works on cars, and 2, because I sold it to him a couple years ago. After a couple minutes, I found a destroyed spark plug and went straight to work.
What I found was much worse than I expected! He told me the car had developed a "hesitation" about a year ago and he would just let off the gas when it would happen.

Mother of fucking god! I would have done something about the hesitation when it started!!

He knows nothing about cars. Ironically, this happened just a few days after I rode in the car and told him what detonation does to a turbo engine. I want to say that it was the misfires that caused this, but really I think something else happened.

Anyone have an idea what to charge to swap in a AWM with its ecu and harness? I have a donor car, but I don't know what a fair price to charge would be for the swap and parts.

so, detonation? ongoing for a long period? or was there some other cause?

I'm aware but I'm curious as to what the specific cause of this?

Is that an Autolite plug?

Santa Maria! [o_o] That motor's trounced. That must have been detonating like mad to result in such carnage.

Is the motor stock? What sparkplugs was it running, and was the knock sensor present and functioning? I've seen this happen to a 2002 VW Golf IV 1,8T. In that case, it was all down to a combination of the wrong plugs, and the knock sensor bolt was loose, so non-functioning.

The engine is stock, it had Autolite plugs. I have no idea if the knock sensor worked or not, I'll have to check to see if it's loose.

OH MY GOD....And he was driving on the motor for how long?!? running off 3 cylinders I think you would hear and feel something like that? I would say a normal quote of an engine swap would be about 1500-1750 in labor unless ur friend wants to go to the stealership they would quote you about 3-4k lmao. Finding an AWM motor with low miles is a a little hard to come by but guess you already have that part squared away. Lets swap mine next! lol

Bring me a palm tree, women(at least two) in bikinis, and some warm weather and I'll tell him just to buy Hyundai and scrap his Audi...yours will be done in 24 hours.

Sounds like a plan! Better yet vacation here in Florida and ull get lots of that. New genesis 3.8 hauls 350whp not sure about torque specs but he will have to pay the same amount for a down payment lol. I just need to redo my top end so much valve train noise havnt gotten around to rip the bitch apart. Make some money but don't let his/her headache become your own

I don't know about pricing but my mechanic charges $1,000 for forged rod install. Engine swap is much simpler and does not take long.

I pulled the replacement engine and transmission today(in fact I completely stripped the donor car from the firewall forward), and found this unused plug on the transmission. Anyone know what it goes to or why it doesn't have a mating connector on my 01 harness?

Reverse (light) switch. It is on the manual harness but not the auto harness. Not exactly sure how the reverse switch is configured on the auto. I have a manual vehicle and swapped in an auto harness when I shorted a section of mine. Had to hard wire mine in to get reverse lights.

Back-up light switch.

If yours was tip/ auto, you won't have a connector in that area. You can hard wire it from the body connector plugs in the ECU box, back-up lights are wired up to that point, even on automatics. Or you can tap from your tip / auto shifter (a longer process, as it's all in the cabin).
