Hey there guys.

I am over on NwQuattro.com, and I made this account the same time I made that one, but have neglected to post anything up thus far.

I picked up a '98 B5 1.8T 5spd from Cottage Lake Motors in Woodinville on Dec. 28th and I'm proud to say I love it.
I haven't dug too deep into it yet, to see whats been done, but it was owned by an enthusiast from CA.
It's got a SCHROTH 3pt harness,
100% bald Proxies RA1's
Some sort of exhaust

I just got back from the Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO.

I have been into cars my whole life, and I've tried every corner of the automotive world.

I had a 1973 Ford F-250 Camper Special Ranger as my first car (I was 14... :])
1983 Datsun 280ZXT
1975 Honda Goldwing GL1000
2001 Honda XR400R
1999 Ford Ranger (lowered, hoodlum'd out)
1986 Ford Ranger 4x4
2006 Subaru WRX
1992 Nissan 240sx (fully built and drifted daily)
1997 Suzuki GSX-R750 SRAD
1991 Toyota 4Runner (lift, blah blah blah)
1992 Mazda Miata (dumped, welded diff.)
1979 Dodge D150 (bought for $500, sold for $1000)
1985 Honda Civic (50+MPG :])
1995 Volvo 850T Wagon
1977 Kawasaki KZ440 Cafe

and last but not least, my new-to-me A4.

Mind you, I'm only 20...

Haha I go through cars like it's nobody's business.

However, I think I found home in the Audi.

I've been using forums since day 1 of owning that first pickup, so I am familiar with searching before asking questions and whatnot.

I look forward to hearing from y'all, and attending any meets that may be set up.

I'm going to be making this a pseudo-Build thread, so stay tuned.

Thanks!!

ED

I'm gonna do a mini build thread on my A4 because my fiancee couldn't care less to hear about it, and I have an undying urge to tell someone - anyone what I am doing/have done with my car.

So, to begin, I have a 1998 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro 5spd which I picked up from Cottage Lake Motors in Woodinville on Dec. 28th 2012.

I really fell in love with the car when I took it for a test drive. So smooth. So well built. I had to have it, and I really couldn't argue the price either.

It had around 173,xxx miles, which was a little daunting, considering all the talk of how expensive they are to fix and how hard it is to get parts. Nevertheless, I gave them all my money and drove away with a new "project".

I get the car home, posted it up on Facebook, and had a friend (who is apparently extremely knowledgeable of Audi's), tell me to do a few things and sign up here.

After signing up and poking around on here, I decided that a few things must be done:

Timing belt job (with all the goodies)
JHM Short shifter
Airbox mod
Tune
and LOWER IT!! (As I was informed that it looks as if I have a 2" lift Lol)

So far:
I have spent $60 on a converter to turn the CD-Changer into an Auxiliary port,

$1,301.08 on the T-Belt and front left UCA's (W/thermostat, water pump, acc. belts, tensioners, coolant, german oil filter, synthetic oil)

In the works:
Brake job
Fuel filter
Valve Cover Gasket
Coil packs (just to have on hand)
Flush Tranny and diffs
Replace the now missing (thanks babe!) grille piece
JHM Short shifter
Tune (Probably GIAC or Unitronic)
Coilovers
Gallardo Rep. wheels (powdercoated white or gold) 19x8 and 19x8.5
HIDs or ebay headlights
Big single ;D
Front mount
Replace that G*ddamn blown rear Bose speaker on the driver's side rear deck >:(
10" shallow mount sub hidden ::)
CB with a PA (Too much fun to not have again) Pp
+Whatever else I need along the way.

I ideally would like to be at around the low 300's to the wheels, and just look good.
I don't need something to do 200mph or something that lays frame.
I just want to have a decently fast, good looking, extremely clean car. 8)

I'll be updating with pictures as soon as I get a quality camera, and I have my lovely GoPro which will be mounting in all kinds of fun places to see if I can get some cool shots.

Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the four ring club my friend..glad to see another young guy getting into the audis early like myself
Im also happy to see your teying to knock out all of the maintence first before anything else as thats the only way to go with these cars and looking foward to seeing it in the future cleaned up

I would suggest taking out the back seat bench and running the wires under the carpet to ur aux though to finish the job its not to hard as ive had to do it on al my cars several times with a much thicker wire from my air setups so the aux should b a breeze to run properly and hidden

TheWaterboy
02-20-2013, 06:39 PM
I have been too lazy to take the seat out, haha. I want to finish it though.

I want to get a tune w/DV next... That, or wheels+tires+coilovers.... I just started working at Microsoft, so what I do really depends on the funds available.

Oh, more pics available on the photobucket, link in my sig.

^^ Anyone from Northern Cali might have seen it before/have some sort of info about it. It has 2 NorCal Audi Club stickers on it, the airbox mod was done before I did it again, among other things....

I don't recognize it.

Is it lowered, or is it an optical illusion?

Have you considered getting new tires? You can almost see the air in those.

TheWaterboy

Just an illusion.
Soon, however.

And I just got some Falken 912's about a month ago.

Welcome!
Just a note there was still some life left on those TOYO RA1 Tires. When I shaved mine back in the day before using on the track they were slicks. Obviously not ideal for city driving and I would never recommend them for wet weather, but still had a beating left on them... Just saying. [drive]

It's possible I missed it, but what are your plans for the car?

I want to put it on coilovers and "Stance" it, and build the motor. I don't want either to be too extreme, but I would like to have something fast that also looks good.

They were still track-able, but I am from the great rainy state of Washington, where it rains daily, and with my wife driving, it just made more sense to scrap them for now and start new haha.

If I'm not mistaken, you're decreasing performance with that CAI. You have no heat shield. Maybe I went full retard and missed something.

Also, how much for the T-Belt? Did you do it yourself? Jeebus.

I took it to a shop for the work to be done. My friend got me about $400 off what they normally charge for the job. I would have done it myself, but I live in a apartment and dont have access to a garage of any kind. As far as the CAI, I've noticed a slight improvement in power. Ever so slightly quicker with the throttle response. I'm going to buy a full heat shield, however, for now I have the one from the top half of the airbox zip-tied on in there.

Few notes on this, I know a guy in northern Oregon selling some coil overs..
Also, I suggest a frankenturbo kit in the mean time if that BT is far in the future.

Hope to see you around at shows and such this year, if you ever end up in the Tacoma area maybe I'll see you around.

I stopped in Tacoma today for some Krispy Kremes while on my way to Montesano. What is he looking to get for the coilovers? What kind? Im looking at just slapping on some racelands for now. I did a little research on the FT, what are realistic numbers for that swap? It seems cheap enough...

Turn super streets with about 10k miles. And he wants 650 I think.
I've seen anywhere from mid200s to 300s. As for an exact number I'm not sure. I can tell you that my car with the ft and uni 440 tune feels much faster than my stock b5 s4 did.

034 has silicone vacuum line for Under $4 for 5 feet. Sweeeeet. I've just got to figure out the sizes and ill be cooking with fire. Coilpack conversion harness with FSI coils

I'm going to be moving to Olympia, WA with my Fiancee and a buddy in about a month, to a place where I can finally have a garage. Life will be good.

FSI conversion completed, fixed my High-rpm misfires and sputters, but now it's running really rich and sputtering and kicking in 1st through 4th. I swapped the plugs to NGK BKR7E's and gapped to .32. I'm going to pull the plugs and open the gap, and see if that helps...

Haven't really updated this in a while. It's been great having the A4 RWD, but just recently the head gasket blew. Which I'm using as a grand opportunity to do a nice build. It's becoming a dedicated track car. Interior is getting stripped, along with anything that isn't necessary to going sideways.

Soon to come:
BT (28RS?)
Solid mounts all around
Locked rear diff
Full cage
Front and possibly rear bash bars
Anti-intrusion bars

Even later down the road:
Removal of secondary firewall to move the engine and trans back. I'm gonna shoot for about 6" back.

Any reason why you only gapped the plugs to 0.032? I did the 2.0T conversion as well and I was told to gap them high like 0.042 because the 2.0T coils can produce a much stronger spark (which is what I did).

You can check my thread about it here: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/497820-Switching-ECU-s-and-BKR6E-Gaps

On the 2.0T coils people will often run up to .044" gap. You can actually buy the NGK plugs gapped that way already. They would be BKR6E-11 (1.1mm gap). Gapping the regular ones up that high is not recommended as the surfaces are no longer parallel. I'm running the "-11" plugs as is, right out the box. I just checked the gap first before install. Diagnosticator actually runs them up to .050" with good results.

I went back and fourth with it. First to .044, the to .032, then back to .042. With this rebuild, I'm going to try side gapping them at .042 as well as indexing them.

Thanks! I go to a local drift event all the time out in Portland at PARC. It's really inspiring to go out there and see a whole variety of cars drifting. I'm really into the "different" cars though. Amongst a sea of S13's and S14's; there is an 09 STi Hatch (RWD Swapped) Matt Panic in his TA27 1973 Celica, there are newer cars such as the boosted FR-S, the badass dude in a 350 Vert, and even a guy who slings around an Auto V6 Mustang. Every now and then you'll see custom creations such as this too.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/16/ene7a4y5.jpg

Which in turn, inspires me. If they can go out and link the whole damn course in an auto mustang, there is no reason a purpose built B5 shouldn't be able to to not only hang, but do very good as well.

I'm guessing it kind of varies from engine to engine. Some say bigger is better, but then some say you'll get spark blowout. Some say less is more, but I didn't get good results at .028. Had bad misfires at 0.045. I just had to screw around with it. Very temperamental.

Quick update:

The car is running really well right now, aside from the wastegate on the K04 being set too soft (cracks at 0psi). It's hitting 13psi and holding that fairly well. I've got a cracked exhaust mani, which will be getting replaced fairly soon http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/26/asyjaner.jpg

I'm getting new tires this week, as well as a new VCDS cable. I start my new job tomorrow, so I'll finally be able to start saving up to move to a house with a damn garage instead if a carport. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/26/e4e6a8em.jpg

I also need to figure out how to seal up some of the interior leaks. It appears that gutting the car reduces it's ability to stay dry.

Nah man, sponsored by the Motherland. Lol I used the VHT flameproof. I need to do it again, along with proper prep and primer, as it all cooked off on the first drive. I was thinking about the gold reflective stuff, but as is I can get my turbo red hot, and put my hand directly on my air filter. It would be unnecessary. Baller, but unnecessary. I'll take some measurements tomorrow for the heat shield. Might even do a CAD drawing.

The oven is the least of their worries. I constantly got the police called on me from my geriatric old fuck of a neighbor. Any time I worked on my car, the police would arrive from noise complaints. Despite on using hand tools, no air whatsoever. I would also stop before 7pm, even though there isn't a noise ordinance in my town. But, a year of hell from that old asshole is almost over. 2 weeks. 2. Freaking. Weeks.
