View Full Version : ECU Removal/Reinstallation - Now water on the floor inside

Took my ECU out, sent it in to be tuned, reinstalled it and everything has worked great. However, according to my dealer (who is very tune friendly) I installed the ECU incorrectly and water is leaking past it on to the floor. I noticed all of this because of the horrible musty smell in my car then finally noticing underneath my mats was wet.

Can anyone send me pics of their ecu from underneath the cowl? Or tell me how to make sure its in there correctly. It felt like it only went in one way before so I feel like an idiot and lost...haha.

Just glad my service advisor gave me the heads up and kept the boys in the shop away from TD1 rituals!

Hm,

The only thing I can think of is that you did not put the cowl back properly. I noticed mine was not put back in properly after my ECU was swapped out and if it rained the water would have run down the windshield and not get caught in the cowl => thus continue down past the cowl into behind the dash.

I don't see any other way of you having water issues - the ECU does not trap/capture/seal in water.

If the ECU cover is not re-installed correctly, it will let water drain down onto your feet.

The cowl will direct the water away from this ecu cover, so it may also be not installed correctly. However, the cowl alone will not cause water to get into the cabin.. Unless your drains under the fenders are clogged. (Our cars aren't old enough for these to be clogged)

The dealer took some ruber plugs that let water drain out of the car because he said they always get jammed up with leaves. Are you guys talking about the giant black cowl piece that goes all the way across the car or is there a small piece just over the ECU I'm forgetting?

I was talking about the "giant" one. But I guess it seems it could be the small one over the ECU also? Or combination of the two?
If he mentioned leaves clogging the drains - I guess it could be that and nothing to do with your ECU swap...

I can't remember a specific ECU cover/cowl and I don't have any pieces that came off and didn't go back on, so strange. If anyone is about to do an ECU swap please take a pic of that area after you pull of the large car wide cowl. Thanks!

You obviously go to Stan Olsen? Is Doug your SA there? He's been mine for years and used to all my mods and enjoys them! Lucky to have them!

For sure, he's awesome. I wouldn't have gotten my GIAC tune without his nod of approval.

How do you like the tune? Stewing on it...

Absolutely love it. I had it "detuned" the other day because I wasn't around 93 gas when I needed to fill up. Went to merge on the highway and literally thought something was wrong with my car, had a mini panic attack. Then I realized I was just running 91 on the stock setup. It's that big of a difference. I'm sure all the tunes feel the same way but never riding in any other setup, I love my 93 GIAC tune.

Anybody else have a pic of ECU cowl cover?
