I picked it up in Sept, 2012.* A kid w/expired license ran a red light and
t-boned the driver's side of the car.* As you can see from the pictures, he
was moving at a decent speed.* None of the airbags deployed. I ended up
hitting my head on the front driver's side window and received a concussion, as
per the ER physician.* I would anticipate that the side curtain airbag
would have deployed, but that didn't happen.* Anyone here have a similar
experience, or insight as to why the curtain didn't deploy?

Not sure where the sensors are on the side but it does take a pretty decent impact to set them off. It isn't an exact science, there is basically a metal triangle that needs to collapse to complete a circuit and set off the airbag. In your case it must have missed or not been enough impact.

Glad you are okay other then the concussion. Good luck with the replacement/repair.

Happy you are mostly ok. Are you sure you have the side airbags? I would have thought that would have deployed them too and I thought they were standard. Does the A pillar at the top of have little plastic piece that says "Air Bag" on it and does the seat have a plastic panel on the side that says "Air Bag?"

Isnt the sensor in the pillar between the doors???

wow, that's crazy- i'm glad you're okay.

it's pretty odd that they didn't go off.. meanwhile i recently read a guy's side airbag went off when he slid into a curb [confused]

ps theres no set guidelines for them going off, it does have to do with a massive amount of inputs. customer was in a similar impact point to your accident, they didnt go off in his benz because it would have gone off and move his head further right, possibly breaking his neck. er doctor told him the same thing, that it should have gone off, but he explained that it was better that it didnt.

Wow man! So sorry to hear about this. And it's silver too :-(

I assume it's headed for the "totaled" designation by your insurance company. Maybe you can work this into an upgrade to a 13'? Hope it all works out man, major bummer!

No airbag went off in my accident. Body shop and police were amazed.

This plus my experience makes me second guess buying another audi if the insurance company decides that it's totalled. They haven't gotten to the inspection yet.

Have you gotten in touch with Audi of America? Sounds like a potential law suit to me.....that is, if the car had them.

Looks like it's totaled. Thankfully you are unhurt.
Now, what's the next car to be?

I have not contacted them yet. Great idea though. I will call them now.

Still contemplating this....

It is more than likely totaled. To replace the A pillar the dash needs to be removed to weld in the pillar, not a good scenario ...
Have it towed to a certified Audi repair Center. Ours was t-boned at appox 35 - 40 mph. Air curtain deployed, car was totaled
As the certified repair facility and AoA could not guarantee/warranty the repair. It was a month old 2012.

That hit looked like most of the impact was towards the front of the door, as others have mentioned I think the sensors are more towards the middle. Glad your ok.

Airbags should have deplyed looks like a decent hit. Have audi investigate.

Guys, all Audis come with driver and front passenger airbags, thorax (your torso) side airbags and head curtain airbags... on some it's optional to have rear thorax side airbags.

Anyway, glad to hear you're ok OP.

Impact has to be at least 30mph for airbags to deploy by law I believe. Looks like it was though.

Surprised they didnt bring up TD1, no deployed air bags I feel a law suit coming on!

This is very concerning! They should have deployed! [confused]

As others said it's not an exact science. The impact looks like it was too far forward to trigger the side airbags and it doesn't look severe enough to trigger the side airbags. Usually when you see accidents with the side airbags deployed the whole side of the car is smashed in.

Unfortunate to say the least mate. Glad nothing worse happened
It is surprising that in each of your cases, the airbags didn't deploy. Very strange!
