First post here,
I've already searched a bit but havent found much info, but i'm also a bit of a noob to Audi's. A buddy of mine (Extreme90path) has a 4kq hes been building for a while, and has a thread on here, and also an A6. He recommended i hop on here for my questions.
So i'm gonna buy a 2001 A6 4.2 Quattro, (auto) the problem is it's in limp mode/perma 4th gear. I'm looking at 2 options... of course.
#1. Buy a used tranny for real decent price and throw it in.
#2. Buy a rebuild kit and rebuild it.
I found it is an FBC code tranny and i've tried searching around for that exact tranny with very few to be found. My questions are,....
#1. What transmissions can i just bolt right up/are interchangeable?
#2. The trans needs to be auto. my wife will be driving it the majority of the time so auto is needed.
#2. On RockAuto they have a rebuild kit, from what i can tell would work. 01V transmission
PARTS AUTHORITY Part # DK8500K Master Kit: Paper & Rubber Kit, Front & Rear Seal, Ring Kit, Friction Clutches, Steel Plate 5 SP FWD/AWD 01V Transmission
Please any info, help, insights would be GREATLY appreciated.

To be safe, stick with the same trans code, IIRC your going to have to look at 2001 models as they are unique to anything else.
Depenging upon what the issue is a rebuild kit may not be the only thing needed, and hard parts for those transmissions can be expensive, hard to find or both. Also I'd only use ZF original parts as I've seen a few no name rebuilds fail in short order.

^^ Dang. well im gonna continue looking for a trans/rebuild kit. I'm looking to spend $500-$1000 depending.
I would still love to know (so i can at least see all the different options)
if the kit on rock auto would work
if anyone has a used trans
where i could get a rebuild kit that will work
where i can find a used trans.
I'm not asking if anybody wants to just go searching all over the place. just wanting to know if people know of places off hand that i may not have found.

Look for a used trans, probably your best bet

I hope you get this car for very little. As is, due to tranny replacement costs, it is not worth a whole lot. HOw much are they asking for it?

Julex, IMO the price is really good. The car itself seems pretty solid other than the trans needing rebuilt. Also it has a fresh T-belt job which is a major bonus. As for a used trans, I personally would error on the side of caution with that. You never know what your going to get...

Its a smaller VW/Audi dealership, They have replaced the timing belt and water pump. interior is excellent, exterior body and all it GREAT. all heated seats work. basically its really sound aside from the trans being in limp mode. i took it out and drove it so it just doesnt have the power off the line cause its like stuck in 4th. Reverse works normal. 150,000 miles
The Owner of the dealership started at $2500, so i figure with my sales/negotiating experience and the stuff that needs fixed, i could get him to $2000-$2250. I'm told by good buddy Extreme90path that would be a really good deal if i find a used trans or rebuild.

How many miles and what condition is the car in overall? The average 2001 4.2 with a blown trans is probably overpriced at 2500 as you'll need to add another 1-2K for maintenance (timing belt, valve cover gaskets, cam chain tensioner gaskets etc and ratail value is ~5-6K at best.

T-belt, waterpump, etc already done. I don't know about the cam chain tensioner or the VCs.

your knowledge and input is much appreciated, thanks Scotty. Nothing was said about the chain tensioner. i've given it a few little personal inspections, its got newer tie rods, engine/trans all through-out is really clean i couldnt find any signs of leaks. Runs real smooth.

I wonder what's different about the 4.2 trans itself. I guess labor isn't HUGE on a simple trans R&R but it would surely suck balls if you put a used trans in there and...you know. As much as my cheap side tries to take over, I've grown so tired of repeating things I cheaped-out on that I'd probably opt to spend the money, even if it's a couple/ few grand on a trans that I thought would last.
Just for kicks, assume you get the car for..$2k. Find a good 'used' trans for $1k. You'll probably at LEAST want to put a decent torque converter in it, add $500. Labor and misc will probably be $1500 ?
So, you're at $5k now..and I'm going to guess those prices are low end.
You're REALLY on the edge of what you want to have into that project. I mean, considering:

I don't know...any way to make this work?

No chance in hell they are different transmissions.

Can't he use some 2x4's or angle iron to make it fit? [facepalm]

Fitment would be the least of his worries, the A6 tcm won't even run the 5hp19, let alone the torque converter won't fit the flexplate, the axle/propshaft lengths are all wrong. It's s stupid idea.

Any chance its just the TCU? I had an a6 4.2 where the TCU got wet and I only had 4th and reverse.

nuh, audi tip trannies from circa 2000 are just crap just breaks after 10 years... it is a fact. 90% of times always the same reason, seal on TC.

Well thanks for the input. I just keep leaning closer and closer to just doing a rebuild myself along with Ben (extreme90path) of course it would be a bit of a learning experience but I, BY MYSELF swapped a 1j into my supra did all the wiring and all the other work. I'm pretty tech savvy so I don't doubt with time and tools I'll have that tranny rebuilt for ~$900-$1100. The other needed work (for now) was done by the dealership. So I figure if I get this thing running reliably for total ~$3500. I'll be quite happy.
Yes I don't really like the idea of putting a trans that has been known to be problematic into the car used.... BUT if I can fid one for ~$500 bucks. It might he worth it for NOW until I am learned up on audis.
