Ok, so i remember when i got my car with 64k miles a little over a year now and once in a while..it wouldn't go into 1st gear...so i would put into 3rd or 4th and then try 1st gear and it would go in smoothly.....

car now has 77k miles almost 78k....and just recently it's been happening much much more...even to 2nd gear...and sometimes it won't go into any gear o:

i never shift past 3k rpm....my first car and my first manual tranny

happens a lot when car cold...but after it has no problem. this resistance to go into the gears only happens at complete stop....when i got the car going....it goes into any gear smooth no problems

my coworker was the one who got me to finally make my decision and end up with 2005.5 audi a4 6speed manual cause he has a highly modified vw wagon. i am car-illiterate :( but he has stage 3 clutch and big turbo...he goes tracks and his car has liek 650hp

he helps me w lots of things thank god lol so i went to him for this clutch problem i am having

he drove it and he went hard..shifting like at 6k and damn it put smile son both our faces lol
i never punch my car...but it felt so smooth he said the cluitch is strong doesn't slip at all and it grabs hard really hard he was impressed at how me and my asian friend(original owner) never abuse the car :P

the clutch is very good conditions from what he told me. so the problem must be within the shifter....

so i took it to audi dismantling shop near my house because my coworker who tested it first knows the guy there :)
he drove it too and went hard on the clutch and he said he's surprised because the clutch is very good the car hasn't been abused at all

so basically it's sometimes hard to put the gear in 1st or second from a compete stop and sometimes in any gear...but only at cCOMPLETE stops when car is already in motion i change gears smoothly no problems ! he also said tat the problem seems int he shifter

He pop up the cover aroudn the shifter...and he sprayed some wd40 ont he balljoint i guess(?) and it seems smoother now...(he just put some ccoupel hour ago) he wants me to drive tmrw morning when im goign to work to see how it feels w the wd40 added...cause all tis also only seems to happen when the car is COLD!!! once warm i think it doesn't happen o: ... we will see tmrw morning how it feels >_<

i will be seeing him 2 days from now...(saturday) to see hhow it went and maybe he will put grease since wd40 isn't permanent solution but he want to test w wd40 before adding grease...

any suggestions on this issue? have u added grease n stuff to the shifter ? lol

i saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOm9gQKFX8M
starts at 2:00 minutes and thats's exactly what i have...its hard to get into 1st and second like that O:!!! but when i took off the lid that's attached to the leather surrounding the shifter...i don't see that stuff int he video >.< unless i got to dig more....or unless that stuff is only there when u add a short shifter?

i am sorry for all my walls of text ._.

thanks for any advice and help appreciate it :) !!!

also, i am looking for people around my area (California north hollywood area code 818) who owns modded audi a4s
maybe u can help me out int he future when i want to do stuff or when i have problems like this? i would appreciate it and i can also offer some money and lunch or whatnot >.< lol cause i have a rattling noise/clunk front of car not all the time....usually when car is cold also...and i think it's the coilovers i have tein...maybe some bushing or something is worn?

but i take it to some places and they can't find the problem :( i even changed my tranny mount thinking it was that because it sounds just under the tranny from front passanger wheel to driver wheel o:

JHM Solid Short Throw Shifter (clicky) (http://jhmotorsports.com/shop/catalog/jhm-solid-short-throw-shifter-2004-and-up-b6-b7-a4-speed-p-36.html?cPath=21_62_64_110_161_162)

I had one on my 5-speed B6, and it completely changed how the transmission engaged. You could even take it a step further and buy the linkage upgrade and mount bushing as well. That whole package will make everything rigid to the point where the only slop in the shifting will be from internals in the transmission. Obviously, these parts will make the effort behind shifting easier because of the solid construction and tighter tolerances (effort will not increase even though it's a short throw shifter). This is your best bet.

Another thing I've heard is that the synchros may be on their way out. Try letting the car roll a little bit at a stop while trying to shift into first. That's helped me in the past. Also, consider putting new transmission fluid in. With 75k miles, it's worth doing a flush and fill with some amsoil or royal purple gear oil.

thanks! i actually thinking of getting a short shifter...it looks so sporty :P

however, i first want to know why this is happening...:(

everything is in the youtube video i posted...but i can't access the stuff he "alligns" mine has another cover over...i'm not sure if that stuff is part of the short shifter or maybe i got to dig more in o:

to be honest i was already ready to buy a new clutch...but i got it tested by 2 people punching it hard and they are surprised at how strong my clutch is lol and my friend has a stage 3.... i never go over 3k rpm thats why its so strong and at 78k miles o:

so....two people told me it has to be the shifter or something .... and thats why i'm asking if its ok to put grease in the shifter balljoitn thing....here is pic :)

Like I said in PMs your likely experiencing worn shifter linkage bushings or shifter alignment.

If you do get the ssk, I would suggest spending the money on the linkage upgrade, because I never experienced shifting issues until I installed the JHM ssk.

The alignment is tricky, I had to mess with it and still sometimes have to put the car in third before I can shift to first or reverse.

Let us know if the grease fixed it, ideally you want to use white lithium grease not WD-40... WD-40 is harsh enough where it may harm the plastic bushing or ball joint for the shifter. White lithium grease is plastic friendly

Tl;DR

Lithium grease

I think you are due for some fresh transmission fluid.

Thanks, i will add lithium grease there...so u sure it's safe? :P

also, since i now know my clutch is still strong and doesn't slip and grabs hard and i'm almost 78k miles...should i put new tranny fluid? o:

this crossed my mind but i thought my clutch was bad....so there was no use for the tranny fluid o:

what type of tranny fluid? and how many quartz? :)

Glad i saw this post. I have the same problem that shown in the video. I have changed my tranny oil for Motul 300 last summer, but still have problem.
When i put the TT shifter on my Jetta, i used to align the shifter with a nail in two holes and putting the tranny in the "dead spot" or "service". So the fork would engage properly.
It must have the same kind of adjustment on our cars, as i dont believe it's a grease issue.
Anybody aligned his OEM shifter so first and second would engage freely?
thx

you mean gear oil?

I would change your gearbox and diff fluids. Your problem doesn't sound like the shifter needs lubrication. The fact that it changes characteristics when the car is moving versus stopped means it has to do with some sort or part that is affected by movement. Think about it - your shifter doesn't care if you are moving or stopped. It's shift pattern is the same no matter what.

Like Drakelore says, it could also be a shift alignment issue. It may be out of adjustment just enough that the transmission/shift linkage in the transmission is not happy.

Lastly, I would not use WD40 on your shifter. I would use a heavier grease. Audi calls for "polycarbamide grease" on the shift assembly which you can get from your audi dealer or on ECS tuning.

redline/oem/motul whatever fits you.

Even with the short shifter which has a more precise gear selection - I very regularly select 3rd or 2nd before selecting 1st. It seems to help the first gear syncro sync up. Bottom line, I am always gentle.

That being said, I have drained Audi's "lifetime fluid" before. It comes out as thin as motor oil. Considering new 75w90 is as thick as molases, its safe to say that 50-100k miles shears down oil to the point that it needs to be replaced.

I have this problem on cold mornings were I have to jam it in but once it's warm it's fine. I always downshift through the gears down to first and this usually prevents the problem. I'm assuming part of the problem is the gear oil is thick when cold and doesn't allow for good lubrication till the oil coats them and warms up. Could be linkage issues too not really sure. Hope you find a solution and help us all out here.

Change your fluid. That is the solution.
