View Full Version : Halogen to Bixenon upgrade...Looks great, but doesnt work. Please help!!
Happy New Years!!!
I've taken the time to upgrade my lights to OEM BiXenons. Pulled apart the housing, colour coded the internal chrome and plastic housing Dolphin Grey. (Pics to come) Im very happy with the look.... But it wont stay on!!! I haven't VagCom'ed yet, will do this Saturday. However I have read that the recoding only activates the high beam. That the lights should still work. Is this true? I have all OEM housing, ballast and Kufatec adapter, installed as per detailed DIY on Audizine. When I turn the lights on the xenons come on briefly, make a buzzing sound (makes me think the ballasts are recieving too much power) then they turn off. A L/R Headlight Dipped error then comes up on the DIS. Will this be fixed simply by reprogramming? Or is this a larger problem with the ballasts not matching or perhaps resistors needed? I would usually not worry until after recoding but I have seen many varied posts regards xenon installs not working and would like to fix any other problems anybody may know off whilst the bumper is off and the wiring is visible.
Any information, thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Coxy
Sounds like a connection problem or a faulty ballast. I would check your connections againske sure everything is good, code them and then see what happens

I had this same problem and had to end up buying a error canceler. its a real cheap and easy fix

The stock halogens draw 55 watts. Bixenon ballasts only draw 35w. You need to recode for them to work properly. The high beam issue is if you don't pin the two wires on the Kufatec harness.

Pretty sure he is talking about an OEM bixenon retrofit and not a drop in HID kit. This would not apply.
I'm hoping a re code is all I have to deal with! Another OzAudi member is going to help with the coding on Saturday and I have now pieced her back together (Loving the aggressiveness, photos after tomorrows polish) So fingers crossed. Just thought I would throw it out there and see if I had missed something.
Mec & Adam - The high beams have been wired as per design. All other lights work also, so the harness etc is connected properly. The xenon's even come on briefly, but then shut off. So would make sense if its shutting down due to excessive wattage, hope I haven't done the ballasts any damage. [o_o] I have the lights turned off completely now so they don't surge anymore, if that's what has been happening.
Mr Lahey - I've been fortunate enough to obtain all OEM parts (RHD BiXenon housings are very rare in OZ, even in the UK, and when new are way too expensive.. Then risked it all spraying them. haha) So I'm hoping the re code solves this. If I must reduce wattage manually then perhaps this error canceler might be needed.
Another member has noted that he has seen a capacitor used between the power source and xenon's. If coding isn't the problem would this be a solution? I have seen various posts about resistors used, I'm assuming to reduce the wattage.. Does anybody know of these solutions and parts needed?

I think your problem is coming from the Ballasts, internally. You are experienccing the well known audi "flickering". Recode will not do anything
To be sure, step1, recode the car correctly. Step 2, replace the bulbs, but honnestly, since they fire up, I doubt they are the root cause. Step 3, replace or overhaul the ballasts

Cheers Phil. Lady luck has been on my side! Met up with another OzAudi member today who had all the VAgCom gear. Re coded and POW.. All good! Set them up with DRLs on. Took all of 5 mins. Then went for a strap in his worked RS5. F%&K ME!! What a ride.. First time in any RS and he dead set scared the bejebus out of me. LOL! My car felt like a billy cart driving home. (But a mean looking billy cart. haha)
Now to change the DRL and city lights to match the Xenons. Anybody know what size globe they both are and where to order globes/LEDs that wont cause errors??
Thanks for all the info guys!

BTW Big shout out to Jens (LowestA4) on here for all his patience, coding advice, timely and well priced postage of all needed ballasts and harnesses. Would highly recommend him for all BiXenon parts and advice.
Plus Marzz (VagCom help) and Alister (BiXenon housing) on OzAudi for there time and help.

Congrats Coxy, glad you got it solved.
Cheers guys.. You were all bang on! Just needed the patience to re code for the wattage differance. All the parts Jens organised and coding he explained worked without a hitch. Was just getting twitchy when reading up on other xenon installs! haha.. Anyways a couple of decent photos of the finished product with front bar straightened. Promise to stop photo bombing soon, just a lil excited!
