I just got a set November of last year... Had about 20k on them and I noticed the wear lines are starting to fade?? [confused] I thought I'd atleast get 40k... What are you guys getting?

ohh and all 4 wheels are worn out evenly.... I wish I would have known that for the price of these tires and the fact they rate them at 50k, they wouldn't last even half of that...

I got less then 500 miles on mine before I took them off and threw them into the Abyss of bad tires.

Terrible tire.. If you bring them back with no unusual wear, you will get a discount towards the purchase of your next set. That is how a tire warranty works.

I have 21,500 miles on mine and I'm not down to the wear lines yet, but the treads are lower than I'd hoped or expected. I'm thinking they'll need to be replaced around 30K.

Eh, they're ok for what I need them for. I know they're quite soft in the sidewall, but right now I have no unusual wear on them (had on for about 7000 miles). Got them slightly used, but for $700 already mounted and balanced on immaculate wheels, I couldn't pass up the offer.

What tire do you guys suggest as a good summer/rain tire that is going to actually last? I have a set of snow tires so I'm not too worried about that... I had searched on here before and everyone talked about how the DWS were so good.... I guess longevity wasn't an issue yet.

Sounds about right... always something screwy with the car, surprised the wheels are not that

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a set of Eagle GTs. I had a set and they started off pretty good, but were useless in less than 20k miles. Never again.

Anyone try just the ExtremeContact DW tires?

I like BFG G-Force all seasons for year round. They perform great but last so-so. I think I got 25k out of my last set, but I push them hard daily.

Wierd story but take it for what it's worth...... Replaced only 2 tires with the DWS due to damage and tight funds at the time, replaced the other 2 with DWS but from a different shop about 10k miles later. When I left the shop after getting the last 2 installed and and alignment, the car was very unstable - I'm talking scary changing lanes at speed. Went back and no they didn't disconnect anything for the alignment and the specs were right on. Anyway got home and got to looking, the first 2 tires were standard load rated 91y while the last 2 were extra load rated 95Y. The standard load were on the front, extra load on the back. Drove it another day or 2 and decided to swap front and rear, now it handles fine with no issues. WTF???

After about another 10K, decided to try again... standard load back to the front, extral load on the rear. Handled like garbage, to the point ESP was picking up on tight curves. Felt like my Jeep used to feel on the street with the sway bar disconnected. Swapped ends again, no problems.

So - stiffer sidewall in the extra load rated provides more stability in the front end and have also noted much better wear from the last pair.

Now that I've told my sad little story, I'll be looking for a better set of tires....

Hmm, interesting feedback with DWS... All of my friends who tried them said they're great for the money.
I was going to try GY Eagle GT for next set, but I guess I'll skip on that.

I'm running on General G-Max All season. Been running for about 15k miles and seems fine with sidewall/treadwear.

I have a brand new set sitting in the garage for my 19" wheels. I won't know how they perform until spring when I pull off my winter tires though.

Bunch of DWS haters!!

[;)]

I drove almost 15k on them in my old b7 (235/45R17 94w) and noticed very little wear. There was a bit of outer edge wear on the front right, but I hadn't rotated them in a while and I tended to corner faster than I should have in a car with tall, soft sidewalls and non-sport suspension. Either way I rotated them and it wasn't really a problem. I loved them to be honest. Great cruising tires. Not at all suited for a sporty driver though. The tread pattern is super squirmy under cornering and the ultimate dry grip isn't great. For a All-Season with a bent towards winter traction, they're awesome though.

Got about 35k out of my last set. Just bought a brand new set. They wore really even, but I made sure I rotated every 5k-6k miles.

The treadwear from tirerack is 540 which should last pretty good. 35k is not good...

Heck, I remember running ENDURO on my old lancer es and those lasted about 60k miles lol $60/tire hehe

Having a treadwear warranty does not equate to a tire actually lasting that long, even under ideal conditions.

There's a lot of hate for these tires.

I've run these tires for almost 50k miles and I still have life left it them. How are you guys driving and in what conditions that you are getting to little miles? I drive I-70 up to the mountains, lots of highway miles, but also lots of dirt roads.

I loved my dws i just had mine replaced yesterday. They lasted around 25k miles maybe more and did pretty well for 2 winter seasons. They were a little softer than the Pirelli p6's I took off but never bothered me I just ran a bit higher pressure. The fronts wore out more aggressively than the rears but that's because I never rotated them properly.

I havent done any autox since putting them on.... they haven't seen any snow at all... and I wouldnt even say spirited driving... I'm pretty easy on these tires... thats why I can't believe they are already worn... [headbang]

From some people liking them, and others straight up fearing them, I am guessing that it is a tire made in a few factories turning out different product. I can say 100% that the set I bought were unstable and not safe for the road. They were a complete joke.

The Dws is not a good performance tire, and it sounds like its not a great touring tire either.

Could very well be.

Also the size can play a big part. the 17" ones have a stiffer sidewall than the 18" ones for instance. Its really weird...

I'm not sure thats true. I think its slant towards winter traction with the deep siping, lots of small treadblocks and softer rubber really hampers it dry weather performance though. Its just not the ideal compromise for some.

I drove tom Montana and back 3 times over thanksgiving I think in my old b7 with the tires and they were incredible surefooted on less than great mountain passes with a dusting of snow, during the bad snowstorms last year in Seattle where we got snow, then rain, and then it all froze into ice, and massive rain puddles on the highway. Icy hills and shitty roads were not a problem at all, stopping distances were totally reasonable.

But yea, if you don't deal with snow or lots of rain, they're not an ideal tire. They do very well in certian things, but in others they fall flat.

I think they have changed (increased) the load rating of the DWS. This might explain the different opinions for this tire. Used to be 91, now 94, I think. Not exactly sure of the actual #. OE is 94, DWS is now 94, at least in the 17" size.

turbowop
12-31-2012, 03:57 PM
Why does everybody here compare sidewall stiffness to load rating? As far as I know there is no correlation. I think the aspect ratio has more to do with it than anything. Take one type of tire and you will see the load rating go down as the tire goes down in profile, but the sidewall stiffness should remain the same based on the tire's construction.

WHat PSI you guys running? These squishy sidewalls are definitely not confidence inspiring.

ericpaulyoung

I actually took them all the way up to 40 psi, and they still road like hot KW jelly. If you can't tell, I really hated them.

I have had these tires on 2 vehicles. I live in British Columbia so a decent wet wether tire in the winter is almost a must. We do get some snow but we do way more swimming than shoveling. When I bought the 2nd set for my 335i (as my winter set) the sales guys told me they are made some change to the tire since my last set - specifically to the sidewalls. I have to say i noticed the difference, in a positive way. I took them off during summer but I can say they were a pretty decent tire. When we got tons of snow I went everywhere in my Bimmer.

Let's face it, an all season tire is a bunch of comprises but as far as all seasons go, I have to say I like the Contis more than any other I have used.

On my S5 I went with dedicated winters but I burned through them in 3 seasons because I got lazy and didn't remove them as soon as should have.

I think I am going back to the Contis on my new S4 for the winter setup.

I don't Auto-X at all. I've driven through a lot of snow. From about Nov.-March, I'm constantly driving on snow. I'm really easy on the tires, as you can see. I'm at 50k miles and I still have the W left, but barely.

When I had the tires, I was running 42PSI.

I just had a set of these extreme contact DWS's put on my 06 A4, replaced some Hankook Ventus V4 ES's. They were good looking tires, but wore quickly and were so loud I thought I had some serious cupping going on, but it was just the tire rubber. I have about 1,500 miles on the Conti DWS's so far and I really like these tires. We had about 12 inches of snow a few weeks ago and they were great with the quattro. I got around better than most 4 wheel drives. They corner great and seem to stick to the road very well. Big improvemnt over the Hankook's, so much more quiet and steer response is great! Great alternative to winter and summer tires. The only thing I worry about is the wear and tear on the rims in the winter.

I will say that mine handled northeast winters with superb ease. Cant say the same about other all-seasons. They were fantastic winter tires.

Yeah, overall I've been happy with the Conti DWS'....I run 245/40/18's on my 18x8 wheels. They are good in the rain, fine in the snow and do the job in the dry. Sidewalls are not as stiff as I'd like them, but they have been fine. They are very quiet, as well. My only real gripe is that I think I'll only get around 30-35K miles on them, but we'll see.

I gotta say, I've had them for a couple months now and they are working great on my B7 3.2. Even with the dismal amount of snow we had here in Ontario, it worked great, no issues, no slip. While part of the road was clean, I stayed on the snow filled lane and no issues what so ever.. doing 90km/h.. btw I have coilovers if that would make a difference

I swapped my DWS's off around Thanksgiving for some Toyo dedicated snow tires and during the few dry days we have had, the Toyo snows have handled better than my DWS did. The Toyo feel soft, grippy, but firm in the sidewall department. Not looking forward to spring and putting the DWS back on! Except only to wear them down faster and replace them. I may just swap them back now since they seem to get good snow reviews from most people. Then I can go through them faster and onto the next. They are 17's, OEM size with the 94 load rating.

I had the 215/40's strethed on a 9.5" wheel and loved them. They held air within 5 psi for the time i had them. Ive recommended them to a lot of people. My toe ended up being off so it messed up my front passenger side but im sure i could have gotten a while more with them. Even with max camber in rear.

Right around 30k on mine with 2x track days, which they were actually pretty fun as they get really greasy (but I wouldn't recommend it). One is wearing uneven due to a slow leak. they tend to fall more into the fall/winter end of the all-season spectrum, so I wouldn't expect them to be a performance summer tire. These are my alternates for the off season.

They are good for keeping you straight in the snow, wet roads. actually pretty good at that.

However, the side walls are soft, and flex a lot on corners. I also notice that the tread seems to be wearing out quick..doesn't seem like they are only 2000 miles old.

I had them for around 2000 miles and say they are OK, not great.

I wish I had bought Conti ProContact.
