View Full Version : trip computer functionality with vag-com and steering wheel button?

So I got shafted and picked up my A4 without a trip computer. I know, it's a small thing, but I loved it on my B6 and have started to really miss it. I know that the vag-com can turn on the software, and I'll be able to set which data bin I'd like to see (average mpg makes the most sense IMO), but I want to take it a step further. I'm lazy and don't want to pull the wheel and rewire the steering wheel column with a new wiper stalk, but I do have buttons on the wheel that would be for bluetooth: mode and a speaker icon.

Besides wishing I had that wheel/car, I want to make those buttons functional for the trip computer. Whenever I press the mode button, the DIS displays "button not functional". So it knows that it's been pressed, it just isn't programmed properly. What're the chances that I could turn that into the "up" rocker button to have it cycle through the different displays on the trip computer? Has anyone done this before?

Trip functions are on the wiper stalk end. There is a rocker on the end of it and a button on the bottom which selects which (1, 2, & Menu) one you want to access

A4s without the tech package didn't get the trip computer, and along with that, they didn't get the proper wiper stalk. Mine has a dummy plate instead: no rocker. To get the buttons, I'd have to pull the wheel and replace the wiper stalk with one that has the rocker switch.

That sucks. AWF has a thread that explains how to retrofit. Looks like it may be your only option without getting creative.

Retrofit as in install the stalk with the buttons? It seems like that's my only option to gain full functionality of the trip computer for right now :(

I would think its either going to be an incredibly difficult option to re-wire those steering wheel buttons, or just not possible. Honestly, it's an easy retro-fit to add the stalk, my A4 was missing this function and I retro-fitted it using a thread on here. The hardest part was finding someone with a full VAG-COM.

I'm also in the same boat. It's good to know that I can retrofit my A4 to get it. More fun times ahead. :D thanks for the info!

So that wheel button would have to be physically rewired and not reprogrammed? Hell, I'll just get the stupid stalk then and call it a day. If anyone has a good DIY for retrofitting the new wiper stalk, post it up.

That's what I love about this forum, no matter what crazy idea you come up with, someone has done it, or attempted it and can give you pointers.

Just to clear up my earlier reply, rewire OR reprogram, it could be possible, I have just never seen it. Here is the DIY to retrofit the stalk. (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/310367-Trip-Computer-Retrofit)

Super Edit: bad info here. That link was specific for a B8 chassis only.
