I have made a few posts since joining Audizine, but let me formally introduce myself. I am from the Toronto area and recently purchased a Mint 2010 S4 S-Tronic with 23000km.
As of now I currently own the S4 and a 2007 VW GTI DSG 2-door. It was my intention to sell the GTI, but I have babied it since birth and it is in 99% perfect condition. It has 85,000km on it.
I am torn on weather or not I want to sell it or not. I drive about 20,000km a year and to keep/insure both cars would/could be considered impractical. I still enjoy driving the GTI even after putting 1000km on the S4. I know I can sell the GTI for $15-16k with no problem.
I love cars, that sums it up. I am not like the average person who owns a car to commute to work from A to B. I think it is nice to have a change in what you driving, if one day I want a 3150lb FWD drive with a STAGE one APR tune I can drive it... on another day if I want a solid AWD car with a 3.0 Supercharger I can take the S4.
Am I crazy??.. There is not much variety in life, and I can reserve the right the do it?..
What do you think?

It's not depreciating much any more. Sell it when convenient.

'Thanks for the replies so far. I am going to drive the GTI for the winter as I have a proper snow tire setup for it.(225/45-17 Bridgestone LM-60's). I am looking to get a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4's next winter and use the stock 19" peelers for the winter. I am looking at some Avant Garde M310's 19x8.5 et 35 for my summer setup *** still run the OEM Dunlop SP SPORT MAXX GT's since they only have 10-15km on them.

I'm in a similar boat. Bought my 2012 S4 but kept my 2006 350z. They are different cars for different occasions.

I have a 2007 GTI with 220,000 km on it. Unfortunately mine with its mileage is worth about $5,000.00. I also had a 2010 S4 now I'm in a 2013. The S4 is the right winter car. When properly equipped it's a beast in the snow 10 times better than the GTI. If you can't afford both get rid of the GTI while it still has some value. If you are a single guy your insurance should be reduced as there is only one driver for two cars. I love my GTI but the S4 is twice the car and twice the price.

My wife also has a 2007 GTI 4-door.. So I've got 3 cars in total(2007 VW GTI 2-door APR STG1, 2007 VW GTI 4-door ~*stock* wifes car, and the 2010 Audi S4) . I figure its costing me an additional $880 to have both the S4 and the GTI with me as the primary driver.

I still have my MK5 simply because there is too much money put into it and I still have yet to drive it with its current tune and revamped plumbing. I'll admit there is a certain attachment to it as well! (it currently lives on jackstands)
If you can swing it keep it and treat it as a toy. I love both cars but for very different reasons.

Thursday is when I drive the wife's GTI. I check the oil, tire pressure and fill her tank with fuel. She then thanks me by emptying my tank.

Asking a car enthusiast forum if they are on the side of having more than one car? Risky [:D] Sure, why not the GTI. Counting motorcycles, until recently my household was 2 drivers, 5 vehicles (Ducati, Can Am Spyder, Ford Escape, Dodge Ram SRT-10, and B8 S4). Wife's SRT is gone (good riddance) so we're 4 for awhile but I'm always hunting for a nice 993. If you have the space and don't need the cash, keep everything you can. My father has 11 cars and 3 motorcycles and space is what is limiting him. Enjoy both your cars

I had a motorcycle before as my 2nd fun vehicle. I was not using it so much the last few years so i offloaded it. 11 cars is a lot, sounds like he never sells anything :)

How about this then: after giving away two snowblowers in the past month, my father still has 5 snowblowers! He has a lot of everything. We've tried counting all the cars he has owned and we usually loss track somewhere in the 30's. Mostly classic cars or something interesting. I can't even remember everything he has right now but off the top of my head he has a 1950 custom Mercury, a fairly original looking 1951 Olds 88, a '67 Corvette, a mid 90's Jag XJS convertible, a mid-80's Mercedes 560 convertible with a Corvette 350 motor in it and then there's a few cars that he switches off as daily drivers and my mom's car. He's out of control

id say if you can afford to keep it, do it.
Drive the gti to work, keep the S4 for fun.
Reality is, the gti has taken its big hit depreciation wise. The S4, if kept well (as you say you do keep your cars) with low km, will hold its value pretty well, as you saw when you were shopping for a used one.
When you are over the gti, or want to daily drive the S4, then its time to part ways with the gti.
If you keep the GTI, you will probably choose the GTI most of the time. You can always come up with an excuse not to drive the expensive car. For instance, parking is limited and you may have to park next to someone and risk a ding. Or you plan on going to the gym and don't want to ruin the new car smell. In the last 8 years I've put 60k miles on my Protege and 20k miles on my C6. Now the S4 is finally here, and I still gravitate towards the Protege for the above reasons.
But it is always nice to have multiple cars. You can take your time with mods or maintenance. I am planning on keeping the Protege to play with, but I am out of space and the wife refuses to park outside, so we'll see how long I keep three cars. I am tempted to just buy a house with more garage space but they are hard to find and expensive. Why won't Zillow add number of garage spots as a search criteria?

I think this is the most likely situation.. Although in the back of my mind turning the GTI into dedicated track car might be a idea as well.. I think I have pretty much been convinced to keep both cars for a while at least..
