After some 6 months of searching for a car, I finally came across a ridiculous deal I couldn't pass up: a 2007 A4 2.0T quattro, 6 speed, black on black leather, sport suspension, 2 owner, etc. This car is practically mint, and has all the work documented (including a t-belt system change @ 86k miles). I drove it to work the first time today, and the car handles beautifully while still getting pretty decent mileage (I needed to wring her out a bit [:D]). There are a few things that I'll need to address though:
- The arm rest cover latch is broken. I was able to get it free, and now just have to hunt for a black leather replacement.
- One of the hinges on the glove box is cracked, but not broken. It looks like the assembly is easy to remove, but I didn't see how the door itself attaches (I'd rather just replace the door than the whole assembly). I may try some epoxy for now and see how that holds up.
- The windshield is cracked in a couple spots. Looks like safelight will get a call...
- Recall work: PCV assembly, fuel pressure sender, and the intake manifold runner (flapper?) motor. I noticed when I was going to change out my spark plugs that a pool of oil collected in the well of cyl. #1, and figured it was because the valve cover gasket had leaked due to the bad PCV. Should I get that gasket replaced too, or do you guys think it'll be fine with the new PCV?
- Cam follower. No records show that it's been replaced, but the oil's been changed religiously at 5k miles, so hopefully fresh oil has minimized wear. I'll see this weekend.
- Carbon build-up. Again, nothing in the records points to this being done, so I might as well do it. I'm not sure if I want to tackle this myself or let a shop do it, but either way I want to take care of it soon.
Anything I'm missing? I'm coming from a stg. 1 2002 A4 1.8t with some suspension, shifter, and other bits on it. That sucker was plenty quick for my liking, but I'd rather bring this new guy up to speed first before I start with the mods. I'll keep a log of all the things I do, and hopefully throw some DIYs in there along the way. I'll post pics when I get home [wrench]
Welcome!
Now you'll lurk around B6 and B7 section at the same time.
You can find arm rest cover on ebay. There are few people who bought them and got a good result.
Glovebox is easy to remove. Mine's one hinge broke as well and I made my own metal piece and screwed it in.
Call local dealer and get all the recalls done before it's too late.
Replace the cam follower for the peace of mind...
Do stage 1 asap! should be faster than 1.8t

You sir are one noob who did his homework!
Congrats on the car, i'm not gonna ask what you paid, cause i always bang my head after hearing US market prices lol.
Dealer changed out my valve cover gasket for free during my PCV recall/swap, according to them the failure was directly related, which of course is true.
At 86k+ cam follower would be high on my list to check, even though mine was in near perfect shape @ 100K kms (~60k miles)
Shell Rotella T6 5w40 is a preferred oil round here, and is known for low SAPS, good against carbon deposits, but will not prevent it, and usually only 28-30 bucks for 5L at Walmart.

patience paid off....
sounds like you have a decent plan of attack, hopefully she'll treat you as well as it appears you'll be treating her.

Tomorrow I'm taking her to the dealer to have that recall work done. I was trying to work over the service girl, saying that the techs would already be halfway there and that I'd pay for the gasket myself, but she never gave me a straight answer. "I need to talk to one of the managers here..." was all I could get. But she sounded hot, so maybe that'll make up for having to pay for parts+labor.
What arm rest covers will fit the 2007? I sized up the one from the 2002 A4, and it's not the same shape. It seems like 2002-2006 were all the same size/shape, while 2007-2008 were different? Thoughts?
As far as the oil goes, I've used Liqui-Moly 5w-40 per the VW-502 spec. That's what we've been using on both Audis in the family for the past year without any issues, and I plan on continuing the tradition with mine. ~$5 a quart can't be beat either.
A little background: my dad got the 2002 A4 brand new back in the day, and I grew up riding shotgun in it. My first car was a 1998 Subaru Legacy, and that served me well for a couple of years when it wasn't laid up in my garage. I did everything from changing axles to replacing bent valves on that thing, and finally sold it once it was running well enough. I took that money and bought the 2002 from my dad, who then picked up a 2008 A4 2.0T. My brother and I shared the 2002 for the past year, but realized it wasn't going to work with both of us being in school, and me taking breaks for co-op. So learned everything I could about the Audis in that year, did some fun things with my car, and have hunted around on the forums for the past few months. The fsi engine had me worried a bit, but the deal for this car plus all the maintence done really put me at ease. I know these cars well enough too, so I'll be able to do most of the work myself and save some cash.

Thanks, I'll try to leverage that today. I mopped up the oil Wednesday, but hopefully there's enough in there for them to see that the gasket actually failed. The whole reason I called in the first place was to find out how much a gasket could be; one thing led to another, and I had an appointment scheduled for the recall work.
edit: damn bots. I can't believe I quoted one...

what exactly is the sport suspension that came with the car? maybe i don't see it?

It sits lower than stock and has a stiffer ride. After driving a standard A4 vs. mine, it's easy to tell that there's a different tuning. The picture doesn't do the drop justice.

^^You can see a HUGE gap between the tire and the wheel well, especially on the rear.

Looks like it could be sport suspension. Easiest way to tell is to check if the shocks are red. (Unless they're aftermarket, but I doubt it)

Side by side with my dad's 08 A4, it's easy to tell that mine sits lower. I'll check the color of the shocks tomorrow when I get her back from the recall work.
I lost the fight with the dealership for trying to get the valve cover gasket replaced for free. It was over the phone, and the tech said "we've tested the pcv valve on your car now, and it functions fine, so it couldn't have caused the gasket to leak". Looks like I'll be doing the job myself once the spark plugs get changed.

Checked the shocks: they're red, so sport suspension for me! We'll see how my spine holds up in the long run.
Just got the car back from Hoffman Audi, and the serviceman tried to put me on the road with a CEL. Really. Apparently it was from the fuel sender unit being replaced, and the code was cleared without any issues. The guy apologized and all, but they won't be getting my business anytime soon. Expensive parts, expensive labor, and now this...

Sport suspension really isn't all that stiff. Your spine should be fine
