OK so I just got done getting my 02 A6 quattro back on the road and when I hit the highway its turning about 3200rpm maybe a little higher and only doing 60mph. Is this normal? Its an automatic trans and I will add I slightly remember it doing this prior to the repairs. I only drove it a few hundred miles before I took it off the road. Anyhow what is your rpm's like around 60mph... thanks for any help.

Also I was thinking of doing the transmission recode with my vag com to make it shift better. Anyone done that?

Dont think thats normal.

It should be under 2400

My 2.8 is 2300 on the dot
and my 2.7 is at 2200.

EDIT: just check on a gear ratio and speed calculator

You should be @ 2200 at 60MPH
This is on stock tires 215 55 16
and gear ratios and final drives gotten from audiworld technical specs (https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:NechMuHCHWUJ:www.audiworld.com/model/a6/02/3_0_sedan.pdf+&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgtYhlm4pPuS57kzKJfMyPCr3-FzFH0z-jM0fzsuMN0Uo9RmizBISyt9V-Kj-La4aVDYTW9O3Ch19Hg4bLu3xZNz8OIH0imZKAM8-A-_CVlZBugBjYo2Pi1vSKuEVFp-r2VZYGJ&sig=AHIEtbTI2SvFpw1nHn2rXnS3KrrtRGAm1A)

No it is not normal, I have a 3.0...even if you are driving 80 mph the rpm should only be at 3000.

Damn! I'm not sure what's going on its like its not going in to the final gear. Let's try this if I'm in the tip shift mode and I manually shift as I'm on the highway up to 5th is that the final gear or is there an overdrive when its in the normal setting? Thanks for the quick responses guys.

5th is final gear. Although my 2.7 drops a bit of Rpms at 56mph. At 55 it's at 2200 at 56 it's at 2050ish.

Have you scanned for codes? If you have no codes, maybe resetting the tCM may help.

It it could be your TC slipping. Codes will help.

I haven't scanned it but I don not have a Cel on but I guess it may not set the light off if its just the tranny? I'll scan it asap.

I'm pretty sure codes in the tranny would set off a MIL. Could be wrong.

On the highway does it sound like its running at 3000+ rpm? And to confirm it is at 3000 rpm in tip when the gear is selected as 5?

Engine noise definitely matches the rpm and I haven't tried the manual setting yet I'll have to try that today.

Drive it to 60 on D then slide over to TIP. It should be in the gear D was in. If its 4, there your RPM issue, a TB Adaptation along with TCM reset may be helpful. If its at 5, your tranny is somehow slipping. and there should be a code in the TCU

Wow, I got the same issue. 02 3.0. Mine hops into limpmode occasionally, but i dont get any codes besides supply voltage to low. Mine hangs around 3200 at 60, which has really been pissing me off lately because I normally set cruise on 72-75mph and in that case its over 4,000(not trying to blow the sun bitch up). hope someone finds something here, that would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry man I had a dead battery so I'm taking it out today..... but the other day I went out with my vag and tried to pull up the auto trans menu and it said no communication or something so I'm going to see what I can come up with. I'll post later today.

OK sorry for the late response but I got a new battery and did a manual tb adaptation and it seamed to be good. About 2100 @60mph the car is still being funny at low rpm s but the high rpm s on the hwy are gone.

SWEET! [drive]

The low rpms will be a bit jumpy since the computer was reset. It will become more stable once you drive it around and it will learn your driving tactics.

Alright well I dont have any problems at low rpms but im going to try the tb adaption. This is what I read on how to do it just double checking to make sure :
"The Throttle is "Drive By Wire" and adapts to your particular driving style. Do a TBA Throttle body adaption).

1. Get in your car, it doesn't matter if you close the door or not.

2. Turn the key to the on position, the position just before the starter turns over.

3. Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position.

4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off" position(don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

5. Wait 2 mins. for a full alignment. During this time you may hear very faint noises and clicks. I
only heard one sitting in my car, if I got out and popped the hood I might hear more.

6. Drive the car as you always do.

Im sure the new battery isnt going to make a difference also???

@mcargill12 those steps are correct and that's awesome you got it all figured out. I haven't drove mine much after the fix but I'm hoping the jumpyness will smooth out soon. Thanks everyone for the help.
