View Full Version : 2002 AR viscous clutch fan blade - no closed ring on outer diameter?

I bought (now 2) a 2002 AR 6 spd.
Noticed to my surprise that the fan blade had not 'outer ring'.
I always thought the fan blade of the AR is 'special' (different from A6, S4 and other 2.7T) and having a closed outer ring (the others have just blades).
This one does NOT have the ring.
Could it be that the previous owner just installed an S4 or A6 (or else) fan blade?

I still need another fan AR fan blade (they are notorious to break), but they are hard to find and/or expansive.
If in deed another donor car fits, this may be an easier solution.

Most likely the PO retrofitted it with a B5 S4 blade and thermal fan clutch....which I like MUCH BETTER. It's now on my car too....

Why do you like it better? Price? More longevity? Easier removal? My ar OE blades are cracked and need replacing.
Thanks

Need to switch the clutch over from an S4 or A6 as well, or?

Definitely a good idea considering the failure rate of the AR fan blade.
I am running without the clutch and blade on a few AR (heck, the other 2 fans are plenty). So do the S4 guys (for different reason (=power loss)).

Was planning to replace it just to keep the allroad completely stock. Planning on some camping down in AZ and possibly towing light trailer with a KTM 690.

What is the advantage to the outer ring? To prevent distortion in the tight operating space?

Side note: changing valve cover gaskets, does have moon seal require silicone or best left dry?
Thanks

Great timing. Has anyone got the AR part number for the plastic fan/shroud that bolts to the viscous fan? Thanks.

I just ordered this with PartsGeek: 2001 Audi Allroad Quattro Fan Blade Cooling System Price: $84.10 Core: $0.00 Qty: 1 Part #: W0133-1736911
The order was OEM and shipped quickly; however, they only offer a 30-day warranty so next time I will pay a few bucks more and buy from a supplier that offers a 1-year or 2-year warranty.

Cheers.

That's great. Need to order a replacement for my allroad.

I didn't put a dab of silicone on top of the half moon seal when I changed my rocker cover gaskets and had oil dripping all over. The 2.5tdi diesel has hard injector lines running over the top which is a nightmare. Ended up having to do the job 4 times. Changed the rocker cover gasket, then oil breather filter in the middle of the vee, changed the vacuum pump seal then finally put a blob of VAG white sealant on before fitting another rocker covet gasket.

A6/S4 fan blade can be bought for like $8 vs allroad $80+. They cannot be substituted for each other as bolt pattern is different between fans. To use A6/S4 fan blade you need to get matching fan clutch.

Rang Audi, they don't recognise the part number. Anyone got the actual VAG part number please?

I have a visco clutch and fan blade from a 1.8T AEB. Anyone know if the clutch and blade fit on an AR 2.7T?

That's just a WorldPac stock number.

The 2.7T fan for the All-Road is = 4Z7 121 301

Viscous Clutch for that fan = 4Z7 121 350

S4 Fan = 078 121 301E
S4 Fan Clutch = 078121350A

AHA/ATQ are the same as APB (2.7T) for the A4/S4, so just find one from an A4 V6 (1998-2001) or an S4. The AEB will not work.

just fyi:
replaced a broken fan blade on 1999 A6 Avant 2.8 30V. Quite easy actually:
- 32mm open wrench
- loose visco clutch clockwise (left hand thread); used a small pulley lock plier
- fiddle assembly out through the top
- remove 4 Allen bolts (5mm?) from old fan, install on new fan.
- put back on, tighten counterclockwise

I assume 2.8 V6 12V also no fit?

AR has AR specific fan. The only fan clutch that will fit besides Ar is S4/A6 (that we know fits) but it is different. Blades for A6/s4 are dirt cheap though so it is much more economical choice overall anyway.

There are probably other fans from different brand of cars that might fit, it is not audi specific part after all.

Thank you for the AR part numbers. You guys are super helpful.

I've spent a fortune on my car this month catching up with much needed maintenance before winter sets in. I hate having an unreliable car. Over the last few days i have passed broken down cars by the side of the road (all of them being attended by roadside assistance). Been there. Done that.

Sorry. Should have seen it didn't have the proper numbers for VAG.
