were staying at the best western which is a total of 420$ for a 1 bedroom two queen beds, for 4 days 3 nights. Im going with 4 people so were splitting it 100$ each which is pretty cheap. The downfall is you want to buy lift tickets 13-14 days prior because they are outrageously expensive.

Marc,

I'm probably goin' with my siblings/whole family so I don't think you would want us to crash in your cabin haha

That's not bad! now time to find other peeps that is willing to pay $100 a night for snowboarding....they'd rather go to vegas -_-
and thanks for the advice regarding the lift tickets [up]

I'm definitely gonna try to convince them and go there same weekend as you guys!

Sorry, off topic a little bit on this thread, but what are you guys using as tire set ups?

I just picked up a B8 A4 as a daily and have summer set up on there. Wondering if I should get a set of all season M/S tires or if the stock summer tires with quattro would be enough for around here?

I used to daily drive a 4x4 truck and would bring chains so a little unfamiliar with what SoCal people are running as far as winter set up who make quite a few trips to the snow each season.

Ais - a snowboard thread sure!

surf thread - we have one - http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/323694-Any-waves-a-fun-thread

wide - even with M+S tires, you would still need to carry chains. i dunno about chains - i know i don't have the clearance. There are snow socks that would do the job. i drive my truck and leave my audi in the garage... did i just say (type) that?

Dan could prob comment better on mtn driving around here...

it is going to be crazy around the 1st - but will get much less crowded as you go towards the next weekend.

look at the usual sites - plus check motel 6, best western, etc.

also check VRBO.

also keep in mind - condo rentals up there are crazy expensive.

Just carry chains but don't ever put them on your car...I've carried chains that didn't even fit before just to get through...

me too.

i've also been forced to put them on - even with 4x4.

Thanks for the info so far. But Ya I thought chains will screw up the quattro system? I have enough clearance for chains but I just thought that was a major no no.

So you guys just use your summer set up when you go? And hope it just doenst snow?

wide- I made it through two winters on M+S tires. On snow days I made it up to Mtn High, Bear, and more on the risky side, Mammoth several times. Now Im running Hankook summer tires, we shall see how it does on a light snow- not sure if ill put it on heavy snow

I've been up in Mammoth Many Many times (used to have a condo at the Summit) and just drive past the chains required sign, installers and highway patrol if present. The trick is to drive in the back way on Meridian rd and no one cares. Once in town unless it snows like crazy they keep the roads nice even after a huge dump. On another note check out the burnt ends sandwich at Angels! YUM

I'm going up possibly 12-14th we usually stay at one of several older condos near canyon lodge. This place is like Mammoth circa 1970. But the condos are cheap. I've also done VRBO and found decent deals if you can get a big group going. Stayed at a couple million dollar town homes with spas, 3 or 4 bathrooms etc. But if you are going solo or couples, juniper springs lodge near Eagle is pretty reasonable.

Been riding for close to 15 years now. Don't really go to Big Bear much anymore but that's the only place I've had to deal with chains.
Mammoth is usually much better maintained, and actually the road up is far less treacherous.
I have a second set of wheels with proper M+S snowflake tires I think these are Dunlop, I don't really remember, but I rarely if ever get hassled in the avant. But always have the chains with you to show if you are in Big Bear.

Gotchaa

Do you guys drive your Audi's up there? I have summer tires so likely would not, plus it is still new and shiny :)

Managed to convince everyone and decided to spend new year's eve there. Go to Mammoth 30th-Jan 1st, so two nights. Found 1 good cabin in VRBO but owner is not replying.

Anyone wanna let me rent their place? Prefer owner friendly but its optional. Willing to pay $300/night max :)

was a great week up there between new years and the 6th.

i haven't driven my audi up there - but its b/c i have a larger vehicle to get my family up there.

staying at eagle is good - esp mid-week.

but weekends (were made for michelob) can be not so good at 15 - its a 6 person chair - but that lodge, the main run - meh. but 25 and 9 is great this time of year.

man - i remember riding up chairs with Dave McCoy.
