I'm in the process of changing the timing belt on my ATW and I can't get the pulleys to line up. When I pulled the old belt off everything aligned perfectly, but with the new one I can't get the crank pulley aligned. It's either this:

The cam pulley seems to be aligned, I have the valve cover off so I'm aligning it by the markings on the cams. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I checked the two belts and they're the same length so that's not the issue.

put your valve cover on and im sure it will line up.

I put the valve cover on to check and the marks were lined up, unless I actually have to bolt it down to check properly that's fine.

is the belt tensioned in the first pic? If not it's possible that by keeping the cam firmly in place/ lined up and tensioning the belt the crank pulley will turn just slightly enough to get you within 1/2 tooth or perfect. Then turn the engine over by hand a couple times, recheck.

Use the markings on your valve cover and crank pulley with that little back plate notch for confirmation.

It's not tensioned in both, but I did rotate the crank a bit to take up the slack in the non-tensioned side so that's where it'll be when tensioned. I don't want to pull the tensioner pin until I have to, it's a PITA compressing it again.

Every car I mark the old belt and then transfer the marks onto the new belt. Unless it broke. Then I never have to guess.

Line the cams up, pop the sprockets off, then spin the crank until the crank mark is aligned.
